Pacific Rim vs Godzilla (2014)

Just curious to see which one you guys/girls prefer more. For me its Pacific Rim.

Now I have heard the "Its dumb", "Its basically giant power rangers fighting monsters", "Stupid dumb fun" etc. in terms of Pacific Rim. And yeah, the screenplay wasn't exactly the best, but:

The Monsters were designed beautifully
Idris Elba's performance was awesome
It was fun
etc.

On to Godzilla, I was excited to see this movie; as I recall, I first saw back in May 2014. With the movie starring the likes of Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver AKA Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen, and more notably Ken Watanabe and Bryan Cranston I couldn't wait to see the movie.

In the end I was mostly disappointed. Not enough screentime for Godzilla, thinly developed supporting characters, and a pacing issues. Now that's not to say I hated Godzilla, because despite all that I just mentioned, I rather enjoyed it. Pacific Rim 2 is now in limbo unfortunately and Godzilla 2 is still set for 2018. But which do you prefer:

Del Toro's Pacific Rim vs Edwards Godzilla?

reply

They were both equally disappointing mish-mashs of japanese sci-fi and Roland Emmerich movies. Neither is horrible, neither is great.

reply

I was so excited to watch Godzilla 2014 and Pacific Rim but in the end, it was just two huge disappointments. Godzilla 2014 for barely having Godzilla and being too dark, then there's Pacific Rim. Pacific Rim wasn't the live action film I was expecting it to be, i.e, a live action version of Evangelion/Gundam/Gurren Lagann to have awesome stylistic melee battles with robots beating the crap out of each other.

Suppose it's my fault for expecting it to be great films.

reply

Pacific Rim was basically a big budget power rangers movie.

In the end all of Guillermo del Toro's fame is based on his name sounding cool and not on his movies being anything remarkable.

reply

and Power Rangers is just an American remake of the Japanese Tokusatsu show 'Super Sentai' that has been around since the 1970s...

Sure there is nothing unique or original about Pacific Rim, Guillermo Del Toro basically just recycled many of the same ideas & concepts from many old Japanese Tokusatsu & Kaiju/Mecha style movies & animes that has existed for many decades now, so there's nothing new about it. But that doesn't mean it's a "bad" movie, just because something is cliche and unoriginal does not necessarily mean it's "bad". Even though there's nothing new & unique about Pacific Rim, but I think overall it's still a really good and entertaining fun movie, and I enjoy every minute of it.

reply

It's not even a remake, they just replaced the japanese actors with americans and kept all the monster scenes because remaking those would be actual effort :D

I don't have a general problem with recycling some ideas but imho pacific rim doesn't remotely reach the entertainment level of japanese mecha and kaiju media. Those are cheesy but endearing because they are so very creative with their often minute budgets. Aptly ridiculous but sincere. Making a big budget hollywood flick with the same quality level that's nothing but a rehash of pre-established ideas seems very misguided and calling it an hommage afterwards feels more like a crutch. Pacific Rim doesn't really add anything to these elements, it just reuses them and adds shinier visuals that somehow look equally as fake. So yeah, a big budget power rangers.

If you enjoy it, fine. Personally I didn't find it entertaining so I had plenty of time to dissect it.

reply

Power Rangers still uses the same ideas & concepts from Sentai, the same costumes & props and even the same footages (America can't even be bothered to shoot those), so in many ways, it's still a 'remake' of Sentai...they basically just swapped the Japanese actors with mostly western/caucasian ones. Whether you like it or not, Power Rangers is basically still just a remake of Sentai in many ways.

Pacific Rim is similar but it's much less of a remake, it's basically a rehash of the same/similar concepts & ideas that has already been used so many times before in many old Japanese Tokusatsu & Kaiju/Mecha shows. But Guillermo Del Toro and his team wrote their own story, designed all their own original costumes & props and created their own Jaeger/Kaiju designs, and shot all their own original footages. That's still alot more than I can say for Power Rangers which is basically just a direct rip off of Sentai. But as I emphasized before, cliche and unoriginal does not necessarily mean "bad"...nowadays, it seems like everything being made now copies or borrows ideas from others, nothing seems to be completely 'original' anymore...but that doesn't mean they're all "bad". Pacific Rim is basically just an American take on the beloved classic Japanese genre, but overall I still think it's a really entertaining and fun movie, and I enjoy it alot, and that's what matters to me. We live in a world that originality seems to be so rare nowadays, that it's not so important to me anymore...nowadays I care more about whether a movie is enjoyable and piques my interest, rather than whether the story is original or not. And to me, Pacific Rim is still a very entertaining, enjoyable and fun movie, and that's why I love it. Especially compared to all these array of Marvel & DC superhero movies constantly coming out one after another, they're just getting boring & bland and not interesting anymore, it seems they're just never-ending. At least Pacific Rim is something different and refreshing to most Americans and westerners who are not familiar with this sort of genre, even though it's so old & cliche to the Japanese.

reply

If you love it, more power to you, I have to respect your opinion.

All I'm saying is I didn't really find it entertaining therefore I'm being so critical. I can applaud the effort that went into the design of the movie but that's about it.

"In the end all of Guillermo del Toro's fame is based on his name sounding cool and not on his movies being anything remarkable."

Have you even seen The Devils Backbone, and Pans Labyrinth? They are quite remarkable, and both Hellboy and Pacific Rim are quite imaginative and fun.

reply

Pacific Rim has no characters, it has plot hole after plot hole after logic gap after logic gap.
Godzilla was admittedly rather slow and killing off the Father character was a misstep but at least they don't insult your intelligence over and over and over.

Trust no one.

reply

Agent_Smoulder says 'Pacific Rim' insults your intelligence over and over and over.

Rates 'Virus' 9/10.

The irony of this entire post is absolutely hilarious.

reply

What's wrong with Virus ?

The humans in Pacific Rim would be too stupid to stop Godzilla
I look forward to this conversation

reply

What's wrong with Virus ?

Just about everything, actually.

The humans in Pacific Rim would be too stupid to stop Godzilla

And were humans in 'Godzilla' (2014) smart enough to stop MUTO or Godzilla?

reply

Actually they pretty much had the Muto stopped but they didn't want to blow up San Francisco with them.

And go ahead, tell me why you think Virus is bad and Pacific Rim isn't.

Trust no one.
I'm thinking he conceded :C

reply

Then Godzilla had a little rest, then left, for no reason.

It was stupid.. admit it.

Pacific Rim actually has no plot holes, it is a very simple plot, if you couldn't follow it I feel sorry for you.

reply

Pacific Rim actually has no plot holes

Trust no one.

reply

No, Pacific Rim has a number of plot holes, but the film was never meant to be serious. It was meant to be imaginative, loud, and a lot of fun, and it succeeded in spades!

"From a phylogenetic perspective, we are all fish!"

reply

What plot holes? And how serious are they? :)

For reference, please consider this:

Matrix could not have ever happen. In AniMatrix (and basically what would be expected of humans anyway) was shown, that humans attacked machines with nukes.
But when nuke goes off in atmosphere, the first thing that goes out is EM wave. So... all machines dead.
Even if Matrix happened, the first scene of Matrix has several officers containing Trinity. Why on earth do not Agents morph into that squad? They would have killed Trin, thus prevent Neo from ever learning about Matrix, thus winning :)

These are absolutely horrendous plot holes. Contrary to this, Pacific Rim is a masterpiece :D

reply

1) Pacific Rim has a lot of characters. Established characters, that do not necessary need to "grow". But there is still some characters development shown.
2) What plotholes? How serious are they?
3) What logic gaps?

Godzilla was god damn awful. The characters in it stupid beyond imagination. No action in it made a sense (like transferring nuke on railroad). Little to none of the actual monster fights, etc.

Why do the Jaegers not use any kind of melee weaponry or ranged weaponry beyond the 3 ineffective (and one VERY effective) shown in the film?

How does one pilot not know something the other pilot knows, why would one pilot hold out a vital life saving weapon until the last moment for no reason

Why did the Marshal and the Aussie son have to die when they could have ejected using the timed demo charge?

How did the one guy survive passing back through the warp portal despite being only in an escape pod ?

Why would ANYONE think the wall would work realistically ?

Why does the Aussie son hate the American guy when he is a veteran pilot?

Why is there no safe guards to keep the pilots from doing whatever the f--- they want to do when YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE PROTECTING THE PLANET?!?!?!?!

Why are these (one would think highly trained) pilots just wandering off course cause there might be one boat with a half dozen guys on it that a giant monster for some reason is seeking out to destroy first?

Why in the hell can a person survive inside of the toxic "kaiju blue" insides of a monster for seemingly no reason ?

I really really don't want to watch the film again to come up with more stupid crap ok.

Trust no one.

The American Godzilla film was flawed, but it wasn't full of constant logic gaps like PR, the characters were just as bland as in PR and some of the military plans were pretty dumb and there were lots of plot conveniences but at least there was a plot of some kind.

1) What characters are established and what development happens in Pacific Rim ?

And there is nothing wrong with liking Pacific Rim but it's not a better movie than Godzilla '14 is as a film.

reply

Kaiju blood is very poisonous. Jaeger fight style is to beat them up (to slow them, soften them) and then use weapons that can cauterize would. Like plasma discharge.

How does one pilot not know something the other pilot knows, why would one pilot hold out a vital life saving weapon until the last moment for no reason

Raleigh did not know about it. Mako was new to all of that and was told that "drift is a silence", after her first experience you can't blame her for being a bit off :D

Why did the Marshal and the Aussie son have to die when they could have ejected using the timed demo charge?

If they ejected, they would be killed as well. And if they set the timer, they would loose control. Kaiju would be able to flee. They wanted to clear a path for Gipsy Danger and they did.

How did the one guy survive passing back through the warp portal despite being only in an escape pod ?

Why wouldn't he? There was nothing that would kill him.

Why would ANYONE think the wall would work realistically ?

It worked a bit. But remember that Kaiju (or better their creators) always make a counter to what strategy Earth makes. Like the EMP, or Acid spit. The wall would work against all known Kaijus, but the new one tore it down.

Why does the Aussie son hate the American guy when he is a veteran pilot?

Are you for real? Chuck hates Raleigh because in his opinion hes is clearly better pilot then Raleigh and Raleigh and his sort (those who were defeated) contributed to the shutdown of Jaeger program. He even says it in movie.

Why is there no safe guards to keep the pilots from doing whatever the f--- they want to do when YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE PROTECTING THE PLANET?!?!?!?!

What kind of safeguard? What safeguard is there for jet pilot not to crash into building? There is no remote control either. They need the freedom to use Jaegers to their full potential.

Why are these (one would think highly trained) pilots just wandering off course cause there might be one boat with a half dozen guys on it that a giant monster for some reason is seeking out to destroy first?

The boat is in Kaiju's path. Pilots are supposed to stay far away and wait for Kaiju. Instead, they go head on, it is their decision. And since they succeeded in saving the boat and stopping Kaiju, they were correct.

Why in the hell can a person survive inside of the toxic "kaiju blue" insides of a monster for seemingly no reason ?

Ach, you are so thick. Kaiju's blood is toxic. We now nothing about their insides. Besides, the little one was meant to "capture" scientist, so it is fair assumption, his insides were designed to preserve human.

I really really don't want to watch the film again to come up with more stupid crap ok.

Since all you said is crap, I advise you to watch the film and stop blaming it for your bad comprehension :)

1) What characters are established and what development happens in Pacific Rim ?

Raleigh, Marshal, Mako, Newton, all of them established from the first few scenes featuring them.
Raleigh and Mako shows quite a character development.

reply

Me, I like both Pacific Rim and Godzilla, but not necessarily one more than the other because despite both being in the daikaiju genre, they're totally different movies.

First off, Pacific Rim:

Guillermo del Toro loves the anime, mecha and kaiju genres, and this passion for the source material really shines through almost everything in the movie. The DVD has numerous featurettes regarding the development of the Kaijus and the Jaegers, and you can see the thought process behind almost everything in the film. Not only that, but the plot itself stands on it's own. Instead of first contact, the movie throws us into the last year of a war with this weird apocalyptic vibe in the background, yet promoting the idea that people, regardless of race or background, can come together and overcome the impossible.

The Kaijus are monstrous and even though they're vaguely similar to certain animals, they still look unnatural and evil. Del Toro even stated to his team of developers that he wanted each monster to look as if someone could fit inside them. Instead of making them look retro, it's a more subtle way of harkening to the actors in suits. Meanwhile the Jaegers aren't jumping around like the Transformers, they're slow and have weight to them, and every time a Kaiju hits or damage them we see the robot and the pilots affected.

Secondly, Godzilla:

The original 1954 movie was a thinly veiled allegory for the atomic bombings of Hiroshima & Nagasaki. In response to mankind's testing of the H-bomb, a dinosaur is now imbued with atomic powers and is able to inexorably attack Japan. The modern 2014 movie retains this idea that Godzilla represents the vengeful forces of nature, but in a different manner. Instead of the atom bomb, the movie evokes images similar to nuclear reactor disasters like Chernobyl or the more recent (and closer to the fictional city of Janjira) Fukushima disaster.

The M.U.T.O.'s represent our disregard for respecting nuclear energy, and seek out other sources of radiation further destroying civilian areas. Monarch had the opportunity to destroy the M.U.T.O.'s, but instead opted to study and nurture them. In response, Godzilla sense the return of his ancient enemies and emerges to destroy them. In the process, Godzilla inadvertently causes huge amounts of destruction to humanity but ultimately destroys a threat that would certainly destroy the world.

Yes, Godzilla didn't have enough screen time for the monsters, but when they're present you can really feel their size and power. I'm glad that, even though development on the Pacific Rim series has stalled, Godzilla 2 is supposed to include Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidorah which guarantees a decent amount of screen time for the monsters.

Can't be too careful with all those weirdos running around.

Great response mate, and I agree.

I'm expecting big things with Godzilla 2. Hopefully Pacific Rim 2 doesn't suffer the same fate as Hellboy 3, but so far it doesn't look good....

reply

I love Pacific Rim, I've watched it four or five times, I'm a total fanboy, can't help it, the monsters are just fantastic, the robots are awesome.

I know I'm like a child about it, but I don't really care.

I went to see Godzilla at the movies expecting awesome monster action, I was very disappointed...

Thank you

reply

I vote for Pacific Rim over Godzilla anyday...to be honest I was never into the Godzilla movies (neither the original Japanese movies nor the American remakes). But I love Pacific Rim, sure it's basically a homage or you could say a "rip-off" of the many classic Japanese Tokusatsu genre productions, but it's a fun popcorn flick and the special effects were spectacular, I also really like many of the characters in the movie.

reply

Thanks.

reply

I enjoyed both but I prefer Godzilla.

reply

Both movies weren't very good but both also had two great actors, Bryan Cranston and Idris Elba. As much as I despise Godzilla 2014 I'd still vote for Godzilla 2014 over Pacific Rim.

reply

Pacific Rim I'd say is a more successful film, Godzilla was boring.

reply

Hope Godzilla 2 is better.
