The Dark Tower soundtrack thread

Let's get away from the casting controversy for a bit.

I'm not sure how many of you here remember the original soundtrack thread, where people posted songs they felt might fit the Dark Tower movie(s). Sadly, that thread seems to have been bumped off the boards, most likely due to the slew of new threads within the last month or so. Therefore, I thought it would be a good idea to start a new one. :)

I did find the thread OP's playlist s/he created with most of the songs that we suggested (some videos were deleted):

So, aside from these songs, what other songs/musical pieces do you think might fit the story?

I think this OST (The assassination of Jesse James) has the perfect western/melancholic feel to fit parts of The Wizard and Glass:

One of the most underrated films I know of too.

I see what you mean - good stuff. I haven't had a chance to see The Assassination of Jesse James, but I like the score. I was wondering why the style sounded so familiar, then I saw that Nick Cave and Warren Ellis composed the soundtrack. They also composed the soundtrack for The Proposition, which I watched for the first time last year. Certain parts of that movie - mostly Guy Pearce's look as the lead, Charlie Burns - reminded me so much of The Dark Tower.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford has an amazing train scene. It's perfect, I couldn't believe how beautifully shot it is (I could say that about the whole film too). I hope they manage to make the Blaine scenes at least half as good.

Also, as is written in the IMDb review:

Although centered on one of the iconic legends of the Old West, it is far beyond an updated reincarnation of the Western. It is an epic allegory about the development of the American cult of celebrity and the effects of this obsession on the individuals caught in its web.

Sounds very interesting. I'll have to check that movie out. :)

Cut the whole movie with Journey tracks.

"I said no camels, that's five camels, can't you count?"

reply

I don't know about the whole movie(or movies) using Journey songs but I would definitely recommend "Wheel in the Sky". After all, ka is like a wheel. ;D

Good thread! Tom Hiel's piano piece in Swimming with Sharks!! (more musical score than soundtrack)

I can think of a lot of places this would fit (Eddie on the beach coming to terms with what happened to Henry while in the grips of Heroin withdrawal as one). Even though it's been used, i would still love to hear it in TDT. It's not oversaturated like the score from 28 days later and Requiem for a Dream.

reply

I like that one. I might've heard it used at some point, but I can't remember where. It does remind me of Eddie, struggling through his withdrawal and being torn between hating Roland and reluctantly nursing him back to health.

This one makes me think of Jake being in awe of the beauty of the vacant lot, and then he sees the rose.

I could see this one being played during one of Jake's deaths. It mostly makes me think of when he falls under the mountains, but it could also work for when he saves Stephen King's life and pays the ultimate price.

Nice choice. Drugs and Radiohead go together like a Popkin and Coke.

Knights of Cydonia is an obvious choice, I think Muse must have had TDT in mind when writing this judging by the clip. Not sure where to put it... Jericho Hill maybe?

I know by Placebo - Roland and Susan. Actually, going by the lyrics it looks more fitting for Roland and the Tower itself. Unhealthy obsession/love/endurance/etc.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlbuPrbHlQk I'm a bit gen x music wise though, Placebo's not for everyone.

"On the Beach" - I can definitely see Eddie deep in the throes of withdrawal with this one.

"Ageispolis" - This one makes me think of a fever dream induced by Eddie's withdrawal.

Apologies if any of these have already been mentioned; posted them ages ago on a previous thread:

Kiss From A Rose (Seal): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdY5XPZFSdw

'Aint no Grave (Cash): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0MIFHLIzZY

Fire (Kasabian): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agVpq_XXRmU

Death is the Road to Awe (Mansell) (from The Fountain): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiUKkdfWq2U&list=PL46CAACA317EB76FC&index=9

"Kiss From A Rose" - I've always liked this song. :) Since it's rumored that Jake will be featured prominently in the movie and his portion will take place in the present, I could see this blaring out of someone's car, a store, or someone's radio that Jake passes on the street after he ditches school.

"Ain't No Grave" - I know I've heard this one before somewhere, though I can't remember where. I can see this being played in a few places (should they decide to depict them in the movie(s), that is): when Roland is fighting blood poisoning after being bitten by the lobstrosities, the end credits at the very end of the story, etc. But the event this song really makes me think of is the comics' Battle of Jericho Hill.

"Fire" - I could easily imagine this playing when Eddie is (or Henry and Eddie are) getting high.

"Death is the Road to Awe" - Yes, totally agree (also, this is from one of my favorite soundtracks). I actually heard the soundtrack to The Fountain before I saw the movie, but the soundtrack has reminded me of The Dark Tower ever since I first heard it lol. I always thought it would be great for a trailer - so much so, I even used this song for a Dark Tower trailer I made some time last year. :)

reply

Did you put the trailer up on youtube? I'd love a link to it if you did :) I saw one i liked a while ago, don't remember it well but i do remember they had used a lot of Halle Berry in Gothika as Susannah.

reply

I've seen that one you mentioned. Actually, I've watched quite a few of the Dark Tower fan trailers on Youtube (mostly since I was starving for info on the movie once they announced it was actually happening again). But yes, as a matter of fact, I did. :) I made two videos: a fan teaser...

...and a full fan trailer.

Obviously, these were made before the release date change and before the casting announcements since the Roland in my fan trailer is white lol. Honestly, they turned out a lot better than I thought they would.

 LOVE it!! Very well made! Very drawing of the three and Guy has always been one of my top picks. Some parts make me think that bits of Ravenous could have been used really well too. Actually i think the score for ravenous was weird and creepy too and would fit well in some parts TDT. But awesome clip, thanks for sharing! :D

reply

Thanks - glad you liked it!  I haven't seen Ravenous in a really long time, but from what I remember of it, you might be onto something. I also remember the music being kind of creepy. If I have ever have the time to make another trailer, I might just look into it. :)
