I'm worried for Stargate!

With all the hate that IDR is getting, both from Fans of the first one and the Critics, I'm worried for Stargate.

Also, while IDR was visually well made, I just didn't care that much for any of the Characters. Sure there was Jeff Goldblum and that's one Character I cared about based on the first movie. But the Liam Hemsworth Character? Come on, the Dude was absolutely superfluous, they could have totally merged him with the Will Smith stand-in. Or were they worried from any backlash, from Red Neck America, if the Former President's Daughter was in a relationship with a Black Dude?
Then there was the Joey King Character, that somewhat reminded me of her Character in White House Down.

The thing about the first one was, that you did actually care for the Characters that were presented. In this one, you somewhat care for the Old Characters, but not the New.

Also they could have been more daring with their lines.
Whenever they were saying: "Hold on to your seats", I couldn't stop thinking of SLJ in JP "Hold on to your Butts."
They made references to other Sci-Fi movies ("It's a Trap") so why not go there as well?

This has me worried for a New Stargate Movie.
Will it be hated by Fans & Critics, crushing the Reboot almost instantly?
Will it be less Epic than the OG Version?
Will it just be visually enticing but without soul?
They already said that it will ignore the TV Continuity (I really liked SG-1), so who knows where they'll take it regarding Ra's Origin Story.

Isn't it a reboot? Just fill it with A listers & it will do fine. Oh & try 2 keep the production budget at 100 million THEN pay the actors and then try to keep it at 150 max.

reply

Reboots can fail miserably. Think Fantastic 4.

reply

All the hate IDR has on IMDB you mean... the real world is a little less retarded.

I am so disappointed that this movie has gotten such awful reviews. Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin are terrific writers and directors so how can it be so bad? My husband and I have watched the first film so many times that we know the lines! We saw it once with scenes they usually delete and still enjoyed it. I would love to hear Emmerich and Devlin explain what happened or at least defend it honestly before I see it.

Ditto for being worried about Stargate. That was another film that we loved and watch whenever it's on. I thought it was such a clever story in so many ways. No need for spaceships and wormholes and warp drive! I know there have been some great sci/if novels like that but it was he first movie that I can remember using that technique for space travel. So let's all hope that the Stargate movie is worthy of a sequel.

reply

Sorry, I should have checked that last sentence. What I meant was that I hope the sequel is worthy of the original.

reply

Some of you think the writing of this movie was ok?!?!... well, its screenplay is horrible during the last third of the film. Cardboard ending is more like. Actually, homemade glue is more spot on.

reply

Stargate is never gonna happen.

reply

Yeah IDR was easily one of the biggest POS films this year. If the same people who made this movie are making Stargate I'll be worried too.

reply

The same People who made this (IDR) also made the Originals. That's what makes it even more worrying.

reply

Wasn't so great during the first third, either! And the middle third really went downhill! 

Honestly, they credited five people for the screen story and six for the script. And it played like there was no-one having an overview and overall say on what was in or out and how characters arced. No wonder it felt so ... patchwork.

But for those complaining about "hate" ... pshaw! It's not "hate" to point out legitimate flaws in a film.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

Stargate is a classic. They will never be able to replicate what made the original film so cool back in the day. It was so unique, original, and beautifully designed. Now, it's all been done to death time and again, and they'll never get a cast as good as James Spader and Kurt Russell. And to boot, they'll never top Jaye Davidson as Ra! They'll never be able to capture lightning in the bottle like that again!

I am not a fan. I just happen to enjoy movies. Fans are embarrassing.

reply

That and the fact they have made 2,000 episodes of Stargate on TV. What can they do with the concept they havent done to death on TV. Its basically Star Trek without the star ships.

reply

TV-Verse added Spaceships.

reply

I love the stargate movie, but I honestly think not enough people care for it now.

Well, it depends... You see Stargate is being rebooted as a something movie studios just want to make money out of, and don't care if it's good or not, it's actually being rebooted by the original writers whom have stated that they planned a trilogy, and with the Stargate movie not turning out how they hoped at the box office, it's sequel went through s million story changes until it became Independence Day.

The originals behind Stargate have said they want to reboot it, so they can get their original trilogy filmed. But they gave also stated that SG1 and so forth was never in their intent, and so will not come into play, but haven't said they will diss it or stuck their fingers up at it.

Stargate is in different hands to that of just being a corporate movie looking to cash in on a known name.

reply

What? Stargate was a massive hit for its time. It surprised everyone.
And the sequel never became independence day at all. The idea for ID4 came about in an interview about the existence of aliens, and Emmerich asked the question of why didn't they just show up to the Whitehouse in huge spaceships, if they did indeed exist.

The reason why a stargate sequel never got made, was because Emmerich and Devlin never owned the rights. MGM went and made a series instead.

There's a lot to worry about if you're a Stargate fan.

Not only have Roland Emmerich's films degraded in scriptwriting quality over the years, his visual quality has also taken a nosedive.

In Stargate, he filmed it in real desert locations, giving it an authentic, lavish aesthetic. He was quite ambitious back in the 1990s. Independence Day followed suit with high quality visuals.

But Independence Day: Resurgence confirmed my worst fears that these days he prefers the comfort of photographing actors on green screen sets to avoid the hurdles of going out on location. Might be convenient while shooting, but it looks hideous when finally rendered. The way it looked in IDR made me feel sick and I fear Stargate, if it ever gets made, will have a similar inferior look.
