Well I enjoyed it

I see a lot of negativity and naysaying on this board, but what I can say, I went and saw the movie and thought that it was a fun film.

It's an action blockbuster wrapped up in a Christmas package, and it is the fresh wrapping that made it fun for me. Without that, it would've been just another CGI-laden action film, but the way that it plays with the Santa Claus mythology gives the movie a feeling of freshness and novelty that helped to hold my interest and keep me invested.

My expectations were low going into it but it exceeded them. I'm sure I'll pick the film up on Blu-Ray once it comes out and it will be one of those Christmas movies, like Jingle All the Way, that I won't necessarily feel compelled to watch every single year but it will make it back into the rotation every three or four years or so.

I will give it a 7/10.

My wife and I agree.

reply

Would you say it's better than Black Adam and Bad Santa?

reply

Well Bad Santa is a bit of an odd comparison. Outside of both being Christmas movies, they're very different films. But no, it's not better than Bad Santa. I would definitely say that Bad Santa is superior.

As for Black Adam, hmm, I wouldn't necessarily say it's BETTER but I will say that I'm sure Red One will get more rewatches out of me than Black Adam ever will.

reply

Never seen Bad Santa and have no interest in doing so.

Black Adam was fun, but an entirely different kind of movie. If I had to choose, I would pick Red One.

I liked it too.

reply

Saw it last night, loved every minute of it. 7/10 also.

reply

I just watched and expected it to be terrible.

It was great and super creative!

reply

Yeah, I loved the creativity -- the Mythological Creatures Protection Agency (or whatever it's called), the portals in the backs of toy stores, E.L.F., how Santa is able to make it down small chimneys, etc.

reply

The CGI was impressive.

There was a lot of fun dialogue as the actors dramatically said traditional things about Santa.

He has a list as long as Rhode Island, and he reads it. In fact, he checks it twice!

I was impressed.

reply

Really? All the technical terms did not give you a headache?

reply

What are you referring to exactly?

reply

Various systems Santa's team employed, and then Lucy Liu showed up talked about something I can't remember, because I stopped watching right there.

I did enjoy Chris Evans in action, but not enough to get me through all the technical jargon.

Only this movie made Christmas sounded like rocket launch.

reply

Well I think all of that is on account of the way that the Santa mythology is reimagined here and how in the world of the film the North Pole operates like a government agency -- full of acronyms and jargon. I didn't have a problem with it and enjoyed the film. In fact, I intend to watch it again tonight on Amazon.

reply

I agree.... the acronyms and jargon were part of the joke... you didn't need to analyse them, they were just funny!

reply

I agree with almost all the positive comments... it's not going to get an Oscar but it was a fun movie. Some people have their ties too tight and seem to need to analyse every movie for the hidden meanings when sometimes it's just a fun movie and it's meaning is right there.

reply

It's always interesting to see what some people come up with in their "analysis." A lot of times I think it has nothing to do with what the director intended. I agree that there is little to analyze here. It's just a movie to watch and have fun with while it lasts. I thought the story was pretty creative.

reply

We loved it, and I'm really sick of all the negativity on these boards. It's a fucking cesspool, and frankly I'm sorry that anyone bothered salvaging the IMDB boards at this point.

reply

Glad you loved the movie! I've seen it twice now and enjoyed it both times. Good Christmas movies are hard to come by these days. Every year we get new ones but usually only one or two are actually any good, so I am always happy to find a new one that's actually enjoyable. It's like water in the desert.

And yeah, there is a lot of negativity. Then again, IMDB had a lot of that too. I think the bigger issue on this site is the relative lack of traffic. I was hoping that the majority of IMDB's users would come over to MovieChat but it's clear that this site only has a tiny fraction of the users that the IMDB forums had. It would be nice to see more traffic and more opinions instead of just a small handful of people keeping the place alive.
