Justified or Deadwood??

Im looking for a new series to watch so it all came down the the 2 series, and since i really dont know for wich to decide too i came here to ask for your opinion

reply

It's like asking which nut I'd rather have lopped off. Both are brilliant. Superb writing, fantastic performances and both are emotionally gripping.

Justified is more action orientated, but Deadwood is pure cinematic poetry.

I prefer Deadwood...just, but you won't go far wrong with either.

Justified by far, in my opinion. It has everything, but especially important is the humor they manage to work into the show....just the right amount and in the right places. It doesn't distract from the more serious parts of the show at all. You will love it!!

Since your post was months ago, I assume you've made a decision. :) For anyone who might not have...

I recently finished Deadwood and am currently halfway through the 2nd season of Justified. IMO, Deadwood is undoubtedly a better show. The writing, the acting, the story, everything. Don’t get me wrong, Justified is very good and I’m happy to be watching it but if you’re looking for the best show you can be watching right now between the two, it’s definitely Deadwood.

I don’t know if you’ve seen Fargo, The Americans, or the first season of True Detective, but I’d say Deadwood is on the level of those shows. Justified is more on the level of Lost or 24, as far as how good it is.

Of course, none of the above shows are on the level of Breaking Bad so, if you haven’t seen that, I recommend you stop reading this post and start watching it immediately! And then watch it again. ;)

I hope you enjoy whatever you choose...

Deadwood is probably the better show. But Justified is more entertaining and approachable.

reply

I agree Justified is definitely more approachable. Deadwood has some of the most shocking and offensive moments I've ever seen in television. For me it was just as entertaining, though I can see some people being put off. The real surprise with Deadwood is how hilarious it is at times.

reply

Tim's character is much more entertaining in Justified. Bullock is kind of bland, imo. Ian McShane, though, is fantastic.

I'd basically agree with your assessment, though: It's kind of like Indiana Jones films - Raiders is clearly the best film in the series, but I think I've watched Last Crusade more just because it's a bit more entertaining. Deadwood is really good, but I find Justified to have more of a re-watch-ability factor.

reply

It would have been awesome to have Ian McShane be the villain for a season on Justified.

I think he might have scared even Boyd.

reply

That would have been amazing! I loved seeing so many of the Deadwood cast make appearances in Justified. It speaks to how well Timothy obviously got on with his castmates.

reply

Totally agree about Timothy's character. Deadwood was the first time I saw him as an actor and, to be honest, I really felt he was the weak point of a very strong show. I went into Justified despite him and thinking he wasn't a great actor but he proved me wrong. He really came into his own with Justified, IMO.

reply

I can see what you mean about Tim O. being the weak point in Deadwood. His character is very stiff and Tim looked very stiff and wooden. But I think that really suited his character - Bullock is a man who is constantly holding in his anger. I think Justified really worked for Tim O. because it allowed Tim to be funny (which he is great at - he has great comedic timing. Watch his interviews on Conan.) as well as having a lot of anger.

Deadwood doesn't come close to matching Justified.

reply

they are completely different.
Justified has a more episodic approach (still never loosing the big picture) and way more humor. And it is finished.
Deadwood is dark and gritty, it does not make you feel good. It delivers more iconic portrayals and has the overall better cast.
I would watch both. Justified for a good time and some hilarious dialogues, Deadwood for a depiction of the true wild west, and some very ambigious characters.

...but they hung him anyway.
Hanged, Ami. Your father was not a tapestry.

I was hooked from the season premiere episode of Justified! I just wish they didn't stop at season 6! To be honest....I thought Banshee was the best show of all time....but this is a close runner-up!

reply

Justified edges Deadwood out for me. Walton Goggins isn't in Deadwood.
