I don't know about you but I personally really enjoyed that movie! :) This was the best werewolf I have seen in a movie and I thought that Amanda Seyfried was perfect for the part. What did everyone else think?? I hope there are more supporters of this awesome movie! :)
It wasn't sensational or anything but it was good. The casting was very good so it definitely was better than it should have been. Overall I thought it was decent and definitely worth a one time watch.
I did. I had meant to see it opening day but I saw 'Battle:LA' instead. Then came all the negative reviews and I must admit I almost didn't see it but I thought better about it and decided to see it for myself. I'm really glad I did. Very, very good film IMO. Will for sure be picking it up on Blu-ray when it comes out.
Watched it tonight, and, surprisingly, it was quite decent. I was a supporter or this film until the low-rating reviews started coming up. I had already read the leaked screenplay and loved it, but the way everyone kept comparing it with Twilight threw me off and I had given up.
I beg to defer, now. It's a thousand miles better than Twilight. It was very entertaining, I cherished the overall fairy-tale mood of it (visually it was stunning), the score was cool, Gary Oldman rocked as Father Solomon and the other performances weren't that bad as everyone keeps saying. Amanda was great as always, Max Irons was surprisingly good, Julie Christie I really liked (the first film I watch with her playing in) and the mystery was well staged. The friend that saw the film along with me didn't get the identity of the werewolf right before the final reveal; I was glad because it still proved unpredictable, like in the screenplay. Many have noted that the film feels very colorful and almost fake, but that's just the fairy-tale vibe coming out of the film itself. This must have been Catherine Hardwicke's dream project.
The only drawback for me about the film is that there wasn't enough werewolf action for my taste. I wish they showed more of the wolf and his carnivorous activities, even if there wasn't much gore shown. Also, I'd prefer it if the werewolf was more anthropomorphic, standing on two legs, rather than one enormous black wolf. But I didn't let this ruin the film for me. Really fun and enjoyable. Catherine's films have a certain passion to them, evident that she enjoys her job tremendously. Plus, the super-shaky POV of the wolf in human form was a little distracting, but thankfully it was just a handful of them, and it would be better, for the film's sake, for the characters to be a little more three-dimensional.
The low-ratings and reviews are, in my opinion, unjust. The film was definitely better than expected. But I guess that's a good thing about the reviews; they lower your expectations, so that, when you go see it, you are pleasantly surprised. I am a film buff and love horror films and thrillers/mysteries more than anything else, and really liked this one. It wasn't award-winning but it was very enjoyable.
7/10. I can't wait for the Special Edition DVD to come out. I'm definitely buying the "Red Riding Hood: Script to Screen" book.
I saw it with pretty low expectations and it fell even below that. The cinematography was great, but how long can you look at the scenery. Fairy tales have a great potential, if they are reworked properly. This however, was neither scary, nor engaging fare - just a mindless rehash. If you want to know what a great retelling of an existing fairy tale looks like, read the short story "Snow, Glass, Apples" by Neil Gaiman which turns Snow White on its head. I hope that is made into a film someday.
I saw a dude (or dudette) up here who saw this 6 times. While I am no one to berate someone's personal tastes, I wonder if that is even possible.

I love that one! It was so dark and twisted and disturbing, even greater than "Snow White: A Tale of Terror". Read it some time ago, before the film (Red Riding Hood) was even released and I developed a fetish for dark versions of fairy tales. I gotta say, I'd like the film even more if it was more 'gutsy' and daring and had more violence. If you read the revised first draft of the film, you'll see that it was packed with blood and guts, with more werewolf action. But it was not only that. It was so much better than the final film. It had the potential to be a great horror/mystery version of the folk tale, but alas.
I blame the studio for this. It's not like Catherine Hardwicke has some kind of obsession with Twilight. The rest of her films are nothing like that. And there's so much difference between the final script (read it in "Red Riding Hood: From Script to Screen") and the earlier drafts, that I suspect the studio put its finger on the whole thing. Catherine Hardwicke would direct a horror film out of one of the earlier drafts, but often in film business, the studio and the producers give notes and instructions to the filmmakers as to how they want the film. They sure wanted the film to be the next Twilight. In fact, it was Leonardo DiCaprio, who owns the company that made the film, that first had the idea of having a "sexy Little Red Riding Hood romantic thriller". They hired David Johnson to write it, and it seems his drafts weren't what they wanted, thus the story became, from a hardcore R horror film to a PG-13 romantic thriller.
Check out this thread of mine to see what I'm talking about:
Yeah, I think the low expectations thing works a lot of the time cause I quite enjoyed the film. I think the fact that it had really mixed reviews made me wanna see it for myself and decide if it was good or not.
Some smartass critic said he would enjoy a movie if it did nothing more than film Amanda Seyfried cleaning the house. I agree, so it's hard for me to be objective. However, I did actually enjoy the movie.
I definitely liked the movie. My roomate didn't like it, so I watched it online with low expectations. If I had more time on my hands, I think it would be worth the trip to the theater.
You had it here all along? You and I have trust issues, Doctor. --Sylar
I loved it too! And the thing is.. I saw the trailer of this movie a few times in the cinema when I went to see other movies, and I thought that it's gonna be a crappy movie! Because the trailer looked like a Twilight copy really, starting with the picture, the sound, the hot bad-boy that seemed to be something more, and I was like "seriously? They actually made such a movie?" because I love the twilight books (!) and I sort of love the movies too (not as much as the books but still)!
And I can't explain why, but today I just wanted to give this movie a chance and boy was I wrong about it! It was really really good, I couldn't keep my eyes away from it and it kept me guessing until the end (I never even considered the werewolf to be who it was after all).
But I have a question for you, if you know, is there going to be a 2nd movie? Or is this just one? I'd like a sequel to it :D
I wasn't expecting the greatest movie ever made and it wasn't. But it was watchable and my girlfriend enjoyed it. So all in all I'm happy that we went to see it.
Before there is any talk of a sequel, I think the first one needs to make a profit. I've read that it's underperforming (I haven't looked at the numbers at all, so I don't know if they mean performing lower than expected but profitable or so bad it's unlikely to be profitable).
