I've just realised the series's writers think the audience is stupid.

This last season is been just a mess. It seems the writers have decided common sense didn't matter, and just aimed for show and surprises, even if that means terrible plotholes and characters acting unrealistically.

It all went terribly wrong in the last episode:

- What the hell was the plane scene about? Eurus having dellusions about being in a crashing plane?
- Sherlock parents forgiving her so quickly even though she killed one of their children
- Moriarty cringeworthy appearances throughout the episodes.
- Eurus plot, including mind controlling the entire staff in the facilities without anyone seeing that in the surveillance cameras.
- The pointless tests and games.
- Sherlock's trick on his brother at the beginning (with the clown and the girl).

I didn't think I'd say this years ago, but I'm happy this mess is over.

I guess the alternative is they just want to entertain you. and you know, don't want to look down on you in the slightest.

You weren't entertained, OK but to attach such an insulting conclusion apropos of nothing makes you look stupid all by yourself (in my eyes)

I haven't been a big fan of this last series either.Idky somthing just feels off

reply

obviously a lot of us weren't entertained.

i will never get how people can defend such a decline in quality with the pseudo argument "hey, it's just entertainment".

reply

I'm glad I gave up after 'The Six Thatchers'. Never thought I'd say this either but I won't watch another episode. My intelligence is too insulted.

reply

how insulted did you want to be?

reply

Not insulted to the point where I realise TV shows are only made to get people away from their depressing lives where loved ones DIE, people work mundane soul killing jobs and ultimately are never happy.

reply

It is a shame because the last two episodes tie it all together. The Six Thatchers episode is a take on Doyle's Six Napoleons and the quest for the black pearl of the Borgias. And the Thatcher reference and all that entails is hysterical. You know these episodes are the last you will see of this series with these actors. You should at least give it a try. It is mesmerizing and you need to watch two or three times to let it soak in. The writers do not think think the audience is stupid. In fact, it is the reverse. These episodes, this series, require an astute audience And one who has a sense of humor and an appreciation for the mastery of quips. Everything is well written beyond anyone's imagination and far superior to many TV shows or films for that matter. A lot of time and thinking has gone into this series, including this last season. It deserves some respect. All the loose ends closed. And what comes next will probably be an older Sherlock and Dr. Watson played by different actors.

reply

Two options:

1) You're one of the writer of the show and you should be ashamed to disguise yourself on a forum to praise your work.

2) You're not one of the writer of the show, just a viewer (as I am) and you're unable of critical reasoning because you really like the show (as I do... till this horrendous season).

Choose.

reply

Disguising myself as Gattis and Moffat. Unbelievable. This is a blog to write commentary. I like Sherlock and I didn't think this season was horrible. And a lot of people think the same way. Who are you to tell me to "choose." I'm mean really, who do you think you are.

reply

I think you might want to watch it a couple of times and you might get it.

reply

the series's writers think the audience is stupid.

A reasonable deduction if they took disproportionate heed of the terminally superficial, self-styled 'Cumberbitches' secreted amongst the audience.

A quick peruse of their 'constructive' input via this very board is testament to that more's the pity.

reply

Maybe the audience is stupid. If the audience can't appreciate this series and at least have enough respect for the genius writers to watch all of the very last episodes to ever feature these actors - then maybe the person who started this post is just plain stupid.

reply

No, I'm not stupid, and I didn't insult anyone, I'm not that childish.

The audience can't respect the writers if we don't feel respected by them.

reply

If you can't appreciate that this series has gone downhill then maybe you're just plain stupid.

Downhill was Dexter 6th season on. A couple of seasons of Homeland. This last season of The Affair.

Sherlock has been way above anything on TV. The writing has been genius. How they modernized these tales has just been extraordinary. The plotlines, the wit, casting and acting have been stellar The last season before this one was at its peak with Magnussen and the memory palace. Sherlock's speeches at John's wedding were hysterical. Maybe this season did not end on the highest note for everyone one but it is far from downhill. I think the writers deserve a lot of respect. True Detective S1's last episode was not stellar but the previous seven were. Way too much criticism for this excellent series. i guess viewers can now watch Elementary.

Past Tense. The writing for season 4 IS abominable. The show is still remarkable because the average quality of TV shows is so low but if they keep this trend up Sherlock will soon join the rest in mediocrity...

reply

You know this is the last season, right? There are no more with these actors. So you won't have to watch it.

reply

I'm hoping it is, yes.
R.I.P Sherlock - A great series until they went and fvcked it all up...

reply

Jeez. May you watch the last Jason Bourne movie over and over to know the definition of abominable.

reply

That's a good example of another well loved and respected series where they messed up the 4th installment, except "Jason Bourne" was even worse because they resurrected a completed story to do it.

Sherlock Season 5 could try the same thing, god forbid...

reply

From what I am hearing, the next Sherlock will be an older Sherlock and more in the image of Basil Rathbone. Dr. Watson will be the bereaved widower but hopefully not a buffoon. But who knows, this may be curtains. S4 may be remembered more fondly than you give it credit. The initial poster didn't seem to understand a lot of the story. Others asking about Molly? Really! And Moriarty is dead. Why was that so difficult to digest. He came back in death is a great idea. It is difficult to create a villain. I loved Magnussen more than anyone. I also liked Jessica Jones' David Tennant character. Euros didn't bother me. Mary to some degree did.

reply

I give credit where it's due. Season 4 will be remembered as it deserves to be remembered.
i.e. The season which prevented this series from becoming an all time classic.

After in-depth discussion and examination, we have concluded that IMDb’s message boards are no longer providing a positive, useful experience for the vast majority of our more than 250 million monthly users worldwide.”

“The decision to retire a long-standing feature was made only after careful consideration and was based on data and traffic.”

While IMDb doesn’t make specific reference to trolls, it’s clearly inferred that negativity was at least partly to blame. IMDb faced a choice between leaving its message boards festering with hate, or employing moderators to keep the peace. Instead it chose to eradicate the problem altogether.

reply

Given the imminent closure of the forums it's pathetic that you quote that in reply...

reply

The writers must be on drugs.

reply

Nah, not drugs. Something even more powerful, like thinking they are the cleverest, most brilliant of writers and people are too stupid to realize what they do is really make fun of people's needs to think they are so smart they get everything they write makes perfect sense.

Quit ya moanin

reply

Sherlock parents forgiving her so quickly even though she killed one of their children

maybe the writers have a point :/

reply

The sister isn't all stable, she's insane. She drew pictures of her family dead, burned down their house, and lured Sherlock's childhood best friend into a well. The plane scene being in her head was to show how gone she was. That's why Sherlock was so quick to forgive her. He realized his own sister wasn't just a psychopath trying to kill people, she was mentally damaged, and still had the mind of a child. All she really wanted to do was play with Sherlock, hence the violin scene at the end.

reply

It became super-stupid at the end for sure. Like the writers felt pressure to go out with a bang, and so they just didn't bother refining the ideas.

Producers probably gave them instructions to go "Impossible mission meets James Bond meets Superman II".
