So who should be the successor to Peter Falk as Columbo...

...if they ever choose to do another movie or series?

I nominate:

- Johnny Galecki, aka Leonard Hofstadter on The Big Bang Theory.
- Mark Ruffalo, aka Bruce Banner / Hulk in The Avengers flicks.

Galecki is my top choice. He has Falk's stature and likableness. Ruffalo would be good too, although he's like 5'8", which is a little too tall for the role, but he'd still work.

I think the producers of any Columbo reboot will have to invest some time and effort to find the right actor. Today's leading men come across as buff, energetic and sexy but Columbo is a shrewd but rather unassuming character who you could walk by and barely notice. A screen test should include the trench coat and cigar.

It might be fun to see a one-shot TV movie made, but I think trying to do an entire series would be a mistake. The idea might even sustain a ten-episode miniseries, like they do with 'Fargo', but nothing past that. Someone's suggestion of Will Forte is not bad. Honestly, though, as several others have said in so many words, what's the point? Most re-boots of popular older series, be they theatrical films, t.v. movies or new series, turn out to be either disasters, pale comparisons or both.

I remember sitting in a crowded bar in San Diego back during Columbo's network run, and the second Peter Falk came on the screen the formerly raucous crowd shut up and listened to him. Groucho Marx is the only other personality I've ever seen who could do that.

That weirdo who played Queen, Remmy Malarky.

As far as I'm concerned, nobody. You just can't mess with perfection. Yes, a lot of iconic screen characters have been played by several actors, Sherlock Holmes, Superman. Batman, James Bond, etc.

But in the case of Columbo, Peter Falk practically invented a new character for the screen. Anyone other actor would suffer in comparison. I think the only people who would enjoy a new Columbo would be folks born after the original show ended or those who never saw the original.
Some classics can't be redone. It's like repainting the Mona Lisa with a nose ring and a tattoo.

COLUMBO IS JAMES T KIRK. HE IS FOREVER. HE BELONGS TO THE WORLD. HE MUST BE PLAYED BY EVERY ALPHABET CHARACTER ACTOR EVER.

Jack Black. Because actors seem to age more slowly these days you might want someone older than Falk was when he took the role. Also, I think if he could suppress the goofiness then Black might emerge as an interesting character actor.

I could see Jack Black in the role.

Not that 'Columbo' should ever be remade, but if so, I nominate Stephen Rea

reply

I could see him in the role.

Well if Columbo was recast today, it would probably be Rosario Dawson, so that's my pick.

reply

Absolutely, Rosario, Alfre Woodard or Whoopi Goldberg would be awesome!
