Is Colin Farrell as sexy as Chris Sarandon was in the original?

Man, he was hot back in the day! How is this version in comparison to the original? Thanks :)

I will skin you. I will debone you. I will feed your entrails to our neighbor's Shih Tzu!

reply

Colin did pretty good as Jerry Dandridge.
He was good looking and smooth, but I
think Chris was sexier and will always
be the definitive version.

reply

yeah, right

Different guys. Different takes on the character- from script to screen.

I would have to say no. Not only isn't he as powerful (he can't turn into a bat, wolf or mist, or move objects with his mind, or manipulate the weather...) but he's lost those little hints of humanity such as talking about not having a choice and looking for "Someone he knew a long time ago" with that painting. That's all gone. Now he's more or less a serial killer with a very large shark-like mouth.

It's mostly the writing's fault, not the acting but Chris Sarandon was better.

reply

I dont like colin . Chris is much sexier.

reply

Colin was hot in the movie but Chris Sarandon was much sexier and charming. And I agree with the person who writes that Chris's version had some humility where as Colin's portrayal was like a serial killer with no emotions.

reply

In this regard, I have to agree with JTheGoblinKing.

I don't find Chris Sarandon to be particularly attractive and I acknowledge that Colin Farrell can be sexy, but in this film I just thought he was flat out creepy as the "human" version of Jerry and his vampire was as JTG describes. At least in the original Chris Sarandon had that artificial charm going for him, and that hint of humanity that made his viciousness that much more striking when he unleashed it.

I wish we could have seen what Colin Farrell might have been able to do with a better written Jerry.

reply

Thank you. And as I said, I think what really hurt this movie was it's writing.

I liked Colin in the update. He was brutal and 100% vampire, no humanity needed

No, 100% psycho, not vampire. A vampire would have to blend in. A vampire used to be human. Does your personality drastically shift to psychopath when you see cows because you happen to eat meat? This Jerry's behavior was insane, no creature that has lived for centuries would be able to survive like that without someone realizing that he's made a BIG ring of death around him. Would he have protected his secret by blowing up Charley's house? No. It just sped up the reveal. That's not someone planning to survive for all eternity. That's just some nut who would get himself killed in a few days.

. Jerry did blend in to an extent. People are too use to vampires that are more human-like, this was a fresh change.

It was not a fresh change. It was idiotic. And no, he did not blend in. Famous serial killers in real life blended in better than that. We're used to them being human like because that's the very idea, a predator that hunts in society, that blends in with it's prey. This guy practically had a glowing sign over his head and it's idiotic to try to justify that.

reply

Goodnes, I'm sure you didn't mean to imply that someone who sees Jerry's behaviour differently than you see it would presumably be "idiotic".

No, just the notion that what he did counted as blending in.

Because yes, I will say it's idiotic to call

painting your windows solid black (I don't mean blocking out with foil, I mean painting the glass black)

Illegal and unauthorized construction.

Talking like a pervert to a teenager about his girlfriend.

Dragging an under-age girl out of a club like a cave man

And blowing up a house over one person suspecting you

is blending in. I WILL call that idiotic. I'm tired of being polite about things that are mind numbingly stupid. Maybe the person who thinks that counts as blending is is not idiotic but even smart people can have idiotic ideas.

reply

I can only go by the way you post- if you consider insulting the intelligence of others to be polite, let alone insulting my own faith and specific family members of mine, then I can see why you are tired of "being polite".

Painting the windows- I've seen it in real life. Deal.

"Illegal" construction- Where in the film?

Talking like a perv- You've obviously never babysat for the same fathers I did.

Dragging an under-age girl through a club- Seen it. Been the sack of potatoes myself.

Blowing up the house- okay, questionable, and there are threads which cover both sides.

Presumably Jerry was using all that concrete shown in the beginning of the film to build those extra rooms at the back of his closet upstairs, and also to expand the basement. There's nothing illegal about this as far as I'm aware. I also liked how they cleverly introduced all that concrete at the start, so that when you see all the extra rooms (and the large basement) in Jerry's abode later on, you can correlate the two.

Many have said that the key in the rock (that the previous neighbors - the Perry's - left behind) was dumb. I disagree. I thought that was a great touch, because to hide a door key in a fake rock that looks like all the other rocks in a pile is genius. "Gee, here's a pile of rocks around the shrubbery. I bet one of them is fake and has the door key hidden in it." Truth be told, what intruder in the world would think like that? Not I.

Additionally, the Perry's, being good friends with the Brewsters, probably told Charley and Jane about their spare key and where they kept it - many good neighbors do that. It makes perfect sense in this context. When I was in residency (internal medicine), one of my co-residents had an extra copy of my apartment door key in case I ever got locked out. My terrible hours kept me from befriending my neighbors but you can bet that if I had, they would've gotten a copy of that key, because of proximity alone.

Amen to everything else Cat just said in her above post. In particular, no one should be labelled as idiotic for stating their perception of a movie/character/storyline.

I'm really tired of the sparkly emo vampires - definitely not sexy. I don't even want to think about what the Twilight message boards look like - on IMDB or elsewhere.

reply

Bowtiesrcool says he spotted Charley saying the word "Perry's" just before he grabs the rock. I haven't seen it since to confirm, but I'll give him his five viewings to my two.

Also, thank you for seconding my opinion on name calling.

Now as to the actual Original Post- Colin and Chris were very different types of sexy in my book. Colin's Jerry was that rough and tumble (rhymes with duck) type of sexy. Sarandon's Jerry was that seduction that only seems to happen in movies.

Because of the fact that I graduated undergrad 21 years ago, the broody, emo, sparkly High School Vamps are not sexy to me in the least. It brings on the creepy as far as I'm concerned.

Both were sexy, Colin was sexier

reply

hes a different KIND of sexy. Colin is a more modern sexy (as in hes meant to make girls cream themselves cuz hes phsyically attractive) whereas Chris is more seductively sexy and charming. Good example would be when hes changing Amy in the original, he has those smoldering eyes that show alot of emotion. Colin Farrell gives off the *beep* me' vibe, and Chris throws off the "take my hand" vibe.

reply

That's not modern, that's kind of sterile actually, lacking in substance or interest...

in 1985 chris sarandon was HOT! after watching the original, i knew i was gay!

reply

NO.

Colin's Jerry acted all weird. Chris's Jerry was smooth!

Exactly, MovieFreak74!

I have to disagree with xzimkidx. Colin didn't give me "the *beep* me' vibe" in this; he gave me the "I'm locking all my doors and windows and calling the cops cause you're creeping me out" vibe. And again, I think Colin's a good looking guy. But I don't care how good looking you are - you're not sexy if you give off that brooding, potentially psychotic aura, which is what I felt even when he was chatting up the mom and girlfriend out in the yard.

These are just my impressions of course. Clearly some people did find him sexy in this. I just didn't see it.

No. He wasn't. This was a very different Jerry. No sexy elements. He was just plain sadistic. He walks around with this "I'm a badass, I'm untouchable, no one can hurt me" attitude, and even when he was to come across as normal, you get the impression that something's wrong with this guy. Jesus. He was just plain SINISTER. I was waiting for his ass to die.

Logan, buddy. It's me, Deadpool! I shot youuuuuu....

I certainly didn't mind looking at Colin. He was still sexy, just not as seductive as the first one.

reply

Hell yes. I found Chris Sarandon very sexy in the original, but I can't get Colin out of my head and keep buying his movies on Amazon, so he wins the sexy hands down. In my book.

Colin Farrel is very overated, consistently boring (same old intensity & brooding thug) & full of himself. This film was a crappily made thing right down to the CG .

As for sexy, who the fvk cares, as if thats something that is cast. Was he smooth, charismatic operator with a believable charm that could capture a women's soul with just a look?

The only thing Colin does for me is want to puke & barf seriously, he's got such a zero personality and being Irish means nothing, brooding looks count for nothing. The male leading men out of Britain even what's his name in Dark night, Christian Bale, are nobodies really , sold on their looks and its all too shallow.

Both Bale & Farrell are really one dimensional illusions that Hollywood uses & places in your faces cause today they have nothing genuine or real to replace them with. And a pretty face doth not a character make, ugly may be beautiful but pretty never. And that other one dimensional douche Jason Statham, enough already.

Daniel Craig is another matter, totally thumbs up, Britain's got one going for them at least and he's also got great taste in women.

Colin Farrell unfortunately had me giggling like a little twilight teeny-bopper over his sexism. Had to say it. But MAN was he fine in this.
