Met and then exceeded all expectations! Great film.

The Wolverine is exceptional in every way. It's an awesome action flick that totally surpasses its predecessors. It ultimately stays true to its comic-book roots while finding a unique and believable pivot point for an outstanding film all on its own. Take out all the action and you’d still have an entertaining character drama. That says a ton.

It's not just that this movie is more character driven yet still delivered thrilling action sequences, though that's true. Rather, it's that there's a whole story here. The Wolverine starts with the perfect pace and springboards in to aspects of the classic Miller/Claremont Marvel Comics mini-series in breath-taking ways. It's a multi-faceted tale with an emotional richness seldom associated with films in this genre.

Too much of 2013 has given us good reason to equate summer movies with empty, flash-bang exercises in computer-generated imagery and mindless action. (Yes, I’m looking right at Star Trek and Man of Steel when I say that) But the writers here are as interested in the subtext as they are in the high quality action. There's no denying that mutant powers are a tool but it’s the character depth that really drives this film. They use state-of-the-art special effects to deliver a live-action version of the comic books. What fans already know, however, is that vintage Marvel books are classics because of intelligent writing as much as comic book flare and fantasy. The movie delivers tremendous story and skillfully weaves together character, plot and action.

It’s just plain spectacular on any level that you judge it.

For the past few weeks, I've wanted to go to the cinema to watch a film but there's been NO new releases that have caught my attention. I just end up seeing The Wolverine again because seeing it for a fifth times beats any new release.

reply

Yeah, it's probably the best film still at the cinema.

Even though I loved what hit the screen, I must see that director's cut everyone is talking about.

reply

Must not try.

Finally A Movie The Character Deserves Indeed.

I don't understand why this movie only got a 7 on imdb and a 69 percent critic rating.

The movie had great action sequences but were paired with welcome quiet sequences that develop empathy and characterization.

The ww2 sequences were really quite emotional and they made use of those flashbacks superbly.

This stands above Man of Steel-that movie was nothing but a dragon ball Z showcase.

Iron Man 3? Please. How that movie got a high rating with it's annoying incessant humor, uninspired CGI action sequences especially towards the end, and a terrible Mandarin twist I'll never know.

TLDR: The movie had the right amount of heart, humor, visceral action, and in the extended blu ray a welcome amount of gore and impalings by Logan's claws.

Critics are one thing but the IMDB voting has many many people who vote anything with a Marvel character a "1" out of spite.

As a fan, I still look back at this film and think of it with a smile. It was a highlight of the entire year for me.

2013 was a bad year. Not horrible but bad.

This is so much more then they promised. I bet they wanted lower expectations because that always leads to better long term word of mouth.

reply

I thought so last year and I still think so today. The director's cut or extended cut only made it better.

reply

Man, 2014 looks like it's going to be even better.

Cap = Yes

Spider-Man = No

X-Men = Yes

That's officially how it finished to. Two big hits and one huge miss.

And then along came Guardians of the Galaxy...

Liked it much better than the origins film and I think it worked having less mutants cluttering up the movie.🐭

reply

Everybody likes it better than Origins.

reply

Fox seems to get it now at least on the mutant side of the ledger.

reply

What's strange is that a movie that's this good is forever stuck under the radar because it's sandwiched between a bad "Origins" film and a super cool DOFP movie.

reply

Why can't this all be taken for granted?

reply

Much like the movie Scrooged.

I accept your surrender.

reply

It's just a well constructed film.

reply

Fox seems to get it now concerning X-Men anyway.

As enjoyable as X-Men Apocalypse turned out, this was the better story and film.
