Did Miguel have a stroke or something?

His speech is very thick and he can barely move.

Kay: Senators and presidents don't have men killed.
Michael: Oh, who's being naive, Kay?

reply

I was wondering the same thing myself.

reply

I was noticing that, too. Maybe Bells palsey? Or maybe something wrong with his teeth, like getting dentures? something wrong with his tongue?

reply

Opening scene has Granger getting a CT scan. Maybe Granger is ill and Miguel Ferrer is acting?

reply

I think you might be right...here's the most recent video I could find of him, on The Twin Peaks reboot.

I'm assuming it's pretty recent? He sure sounds a heckuva lot better than he does on the NCIS:LA.

He has looked/sounded horrible for years now. If he has been acting it, major kudos to the writers and Ferrar for a long, slow reveal.

That said, I doubt it is acting. I have been waiting for some kind of "announcement on his health for at least a couple years now.

reply

I wondered this too. If he's acting it, he's done a great job fooling us. ?

reply

I'm watching on demand the morning after. If he's acting, he's doing a great job. If he had a stroke, he's a trouper.

I hope he's all right. I like Miguel Ferrer, and Granger has really grown on me

reply

I think the CT-scan in the beginning and then his talk with Hetty in the end where he talked about smoking, drinking and being exposed to Agent Orange are hints that he has cancer.

I've got nothing against God, it's his fanclub I can't stand

reply

I agree with the cancer speculation.
He is also very gaunt and could stand to put on a few pounds. He has grown on me as well. I think he's an old softy.

I hope he is okay (in real life)

reply

Seems to be character driven:

Gosh, I hope you're all true. The convo with Hetty reassured me somewhat. Man, if he's acting then he is a freakishly good actor. Thanks for your responses.

When was this filmed?

Since this was uploaded in 2013, it's at least 3 years old.

The Twin Peaks trailer, while it doesn't confirm his health/speaking ability decisively, had to have been shot after it was announced that Miguel was joining the cast in November of 2015. It seems like most of the Twin Peaks PR occurred sometime in early 2016 after 'more than half' of it had been shot (they finished in April). Season 7 NCIS filmed Aug '15 to March '16, and I'm certain that he was slurring during season 7- not as bad as he's slurring now, but definitely slurring.

It's not indisputable proof, but, based on how he sounds in the Twin Peaks trailer and the overall timeline, I'd bet that the slurring is an affection he's put on for the role- and that he's ramped it up to sell an illness for the character that, will, in turn cover a potential hiatus or departure (or maybe was used to sell his time off for Twin Peaks?). I think the problem is that he's such a good actor that people believe that not only the character is sick, but the actor is sick as well. The gossip of stroke rumors seems to coincide with the upswing in his on air speech impediment around October- and yet, filming for those episodes occurred around 2 months earlier. Even if one wants to make a distinction between s7 slurring and s8 (I noticed it in 7) and go with the premise that the physical problem occurred before s8 started filming, the rumors should have started when the problem began, not a few months later. The fact that they line up with his portrayal makes them extremely suspicious, imo.

Twin Peaks is coming out summer of '17. Although it's a pretty big ensemble cast, I think his role is large enough to require at least some press. The show, itself, because it was filmed so long ago, may not answer all the questions, but, even if he doesn't do press, the show should certainly help clear things up.

Lastly, even if it turns out there is an issue, this may have nothing to do with a stroke. His slurring, his somewhat leathery skin, his gaunt features- they all seem to point to the possibility of alcoholism.

I don;t think the producers would allow to act if he was so debilitated by drink. But I hope you're right about his incredible acting. And that no doubt is what it is.

Michael: Oh, who's being naive, Kay?

reply

Crap. I was wrong. That really sucks. Miguel's performance in NCIS didn't make or break the show, imo, but he is an incredible talent and will be missed.

reply

Yea, unfortunately so was I. I was so hoping he was just getting into character-mode.

I realized while watching Sunday, that the way he holds his tongue to the roof of his mouth while talking is like when I wore a retainer when I was younger. I sounded like that also. So being that they are working the story line of him having tests done, I think maybe it's all acting(at least I hope so).
