I laughed from start to finish. Am I a moron?

My top five movies:

1) Brazil
2) The Godfather
3) Dr. Strangelove
4) The Big Lebowski
5) Glengarry Glen Ross

I consider myself a serious film buff and like to think my standards are high; I watch lots of art films, indie films, old classics, and do not think Citizen Kane is overrated etc. I'm no historian, but I'm a cinema addict through and through.p

One joy I find from movies is the endless variety of feelings they induce; meloncholy, exhilaration, dread, inspiration, anger, empathy... the medium is capable of so much and I appreciate any film that succeeds at making me feel what it means to.

One of the feelings I savor in films is mindless laughter. I cherish movies like Dumb and Dumber, Super Troopers, and Billy Madison. However, I'm also a snob in this genre; I hate Freddy Got Fingered, Sorority Boys, any recent Sandler movie etc. For me, the ones that work, work because they're so proudly absurd that I laugh at the fact that I'm expected to laugh in the first place. The ones that don't seem to assume the worst about their audience, and come off as lazy/insulting.

Maybe it was because I had about six beers before I saw it, but I found Movie 43 hilarious; a terrible film in so many ways it barely qualifies as a film. Yet my gut reaction was uncontrollable laughter. I can't entirely blame the booze, since alcohol couldn't save the Hangover series and other movies I found
insufferable.

This might be the most anyone has written in the defense of Movie 43, but I'm not so much defending the quality as I am challenging the hostility I've noticed towards people who found it funny. Movie 43 is a turd, and any repeated viewings on my part will likely be on account of YouTube clips. But I laughed at at least 60% of the skits I remember. My question is... is humor really so subjective that a serious film lover like myself could actually find it funny, or does my gut reaction automatically make me a moron?

It's a bad movie, but it's *beep* hilarious

Some shorts gave me a chuckle, like the one with Kate Winslet. That one was actually funny because it wasn't to over the top. The ones with Naomi Watts and Halle berry had some parts in it, and I like how dark they became.

However, the film overall was boring. Not even funny. I don't mind risky comedies if it is done properly and funny, However this one was cheaply done with crap cinematography and editing, ad the humour wasn't that funny.

not a moron...but definitely mentally ill.

There is subject for sketches. Depression, pop culture, human relationships - every gag has a heavy psychological subtone. It depicts our insecurities and prejudices. Just as example - "chinman" is all about human perception vs physical perception and how our prejudices bias our opinions. It's not easy to see because of the elephant-in-the-room over the top lame comedy, but this movie is actually deep - which in turn shows how shallow are some of it's critics failing to see the social criticism.

Or maybe it is a young scat pranks movie and i am just looking in to deep. All depends on wether you see my opinion as respectable and wise or just another internet troll.

Which is also another of the underlying themes of this movie. Isn't that fun?

finally someone who feels the same way I did. I thought this movie was hilarious, but to honest the beers did help. I´m glad to see that someone is courageous enough to write something positive about it (I wasn´t)

reply

Definitely not.
I'm not that into comedy but this one worked for me. So did some of the negative replies which are evenly hilarious. The decency scamps can be so hilarious not even knowing that themselves. Either I am missing something or they are. This low rating tells me somehow something's terribly messed up with their perception of freedom of expression. Do they feel offended? Their tender souls crushed?
Best not waste another word on that.

No, you are normal, straight, white person. Kinda rare these days....
I gave 10/10, watched it about 20 times, all my mates and girls LOVE it.
Yes, we are all white, straight, educated, over 30.

I loved it as well . I bought it.

Of course you are not a moron mate, and you have some good films in your list...
I do however wonder whether your parents had a bad day once?

Everyone is entitled to like a film or not...
And like someone else said, I cannot understand your humor.
Besides many of the films you mentioned would have been put into liquidation if you and a few of your friends hadn't taken the time to pay for some tickets to see them.

So you could say that you have helped with the American economy in your own way.
Personally, I wish you had given the money to charity.
The person you may have saved by doing this might have grown up to be a writer and created films that many other poor mortals like myself may have been able to see and enjoy.

But mindless laughter is a good elixir and something I suffer from regularly, whenever they announce the wages for the actors on the Big Bang Theory, and that it will be renewed for yet another season. I definitely lose my mind when things like that happen. The good news is that I did not buy a ticket and they did not lock me up for my temporary insanity.

BTW I hope Glengarry Glen Ross was not a double bill with Movie 43? That would have been amazing scheduling. The double bill to die for... and I do mean that literally...
