I laughed from start to finish. Am I a moron?
My top five movies:
1) Brazil
2) The Godfather
3) Dr. Strangelove
4) The Big Lebowski
5) Glengarry Glen Ross
I consider myself a serious film buff and like to think my standards are high; I watch lots of art films, indie films, old classics, and do not think Citizen Kane is overrated etc. I'm no historian, but I'm a cinema addict through and through.p
One joy I find from movies is the endless variety of feelings they induce; meloncholy, exhilaration, dread, inspiration, anger, empathy... the medium is capable of so much and I appreciate any film that succeeds at making me feel what it means to.
One of the feelings I savor in films is mindless laughter. I cherish movies like Dumb and Dumber, Super Troopers, and Billy Madison. However, I'm also a snob in this genre; I hate Freddy Got Fingered, Sorority Boys, any recent Sandler movie etc. For me, the ones that work, work because they're so proudly absurd that I laugh at the fact that I'm expected to laugh in the first place. The ones that don't seem to assume the worst about their audience, and come off as lazy/insulting.
Maybe it was because I had about six beers before I saw it, but I found Movie 43 hilarious; a terrible film in so many ways it barely qualifies as a film. Yet my gut reaction was uncontrollable laughter. I can't entirely blame the booze, since alcohol couldn't save the Hangover series and other movies I found
insufferable.
This might be the most anyone has written in the defense of Movie 43, but I'm not so much defending the quality as I am challenging the hostility I've noticed towards people who found it funny. Movie 43 is a turd, and any repeated viewings on my part will likely be on account of YouTube clips. But I laughed at at least 60% of the skits I remember. My question is... is humor really so subjective that a serious film lover like myself could actually find it funny, or does my gut reaction automatically make me a moron?
