Comedy ? What the **** is wrong with you people ?

How can this be categorized as COMEDY?? It has drama written all over it. Maybe the presence of Rogen - which didn't bring anything "comedy" related to the movie anyway - coule be considered somewhat funny. I consider whoever names the genre of this movie to be a complete idiot. Some crap movies WANT to be comedies, and have NOTHING funny in them, but this movie intends to be a soapy drama movie about a young guy having cancer from the start to the end. It so screams in it's attempt to be dramatic on all plans, including the soundtrack.

Offtopic - I found the overall cinematic feeling to be great - awesome shooting, awesome angles, awesome colors !

"Have you ever heard of a black comedy?"

Apparently you haven't.

"Submarine" is a black comedy. "A Serious Man" is a black comedy.

THIS is a sweet and cheerful indie movie about a young man's struggle with cancer.

I'm sorry, but when [spoilers]Seth takes the picture of BDH kissing the Jesus guy at the art gallery and goes "I *beep* nailed that *beep* I can't help but absolutely lose myself in laughter. That's a black comedy moment right there - taking something awful like a girl cheating in public on her boyfriend who is dying of cancer and turning it into a laugh-out-loud moment.

That was textbook.

50/50 is a brilliant comedy, but if the OP does not understand why it is a comedy I shall explain. This film could have been very easily labelled a tragedy or a drama, obviously it was very dramatic but the key to distinguishing it as either a comedy or a drama is the ending. Had the main character died it would have been a drama, and to make sure it is a comedy the protagonist gets the girl and the film ends happily with them together as is typical in any comedy. Alternatively had Romeo not killed himself before Juliet awakes in "Romeo and Juliet" the film would undoubtedly be one of the greatest comedies ever because it would end happily with a couple of lovers.

That's what I thought when I read the OP and was going to write something similar before I saw your response.

First half comedy, second half drama. 50/50.

I'm the grim reaper, lardass, and you're my next customer.

Your idea of comedy is wrong.
Although I too tend to atribute comedies to movies that make you laugh. That's not always the case.
A comedy is...among other things..."the genre of dramatic literature dealing with the comic or with the serious in a light or satirical manner"

It was just that. He was dealing with cancer yet we saw funny satirical moments like getting drunk, smoking weed, trying to get laid, the awkward touching scenes...among other things. Sure there were some dramatic moments, and I would label it that as well. But it was also a comedy.

Can you name a comedy which you enjoyed yet which did not make you laugh? I'd struggle personally...

i personally found the movie more comedic than dramatic, i don't think the drama aspect was very well done, while it was touching i barely shed a tear at any single scene, it was too light-hearted and funny for me to take the drama seriously. it was a good movie though, although to be completely honest it wasn't as brilliant as i was hoping and people were saying. this coming from someone who's obsessed with both joseph gordon-levitt and anna kendrick.

It made me laugh, it made me laugh out loud, it made me shed some man tears, it made me cry.

It's a comedy, and a drama. I wouldn't call it a Dramedy though as I HATE the term.

The part that made me laugh out loud was when (SPOILER ALERT!) ----------------------------------He has successfully had the surgery and his friend makes the remark his surgery wound looks like the alien from Total Recall, and he proceeds on picking up the sides of his own wound and pretending his back talks, while starting to yell in that alien voice "The Oxygen!"

5 seconds of comedy excellence.
