I'm talking the number of bars visited in one night and the amount of beer consumed in one night. Is there anywhere in the world this could be attempted? And would it be possible that you'd still be alive after 12 pints and a couple random shots?
Easily. When I had my birthday I'd do a pint for each year until I got to somewhere in my thirties and settled on half a pint a year.
A bit of a push in my fifties but possible on good days. Alas now I live in a town where there's only a few pubs so doing twelve establishments in one night is impossible due to the lack of pubs. When I lived in Antwerp it was easy to do a beer per year in different places due to the proximity of bars to each other; heck, in some parts of the city they'd occassionally have a non-bar next to a bar!
But twelve pints in an afternoon/evening? Dead easy. Though the following day may be a little painful, or the following few days now that I am in my fifties...
There is a well known pub run in the city I live in and I have done it myself as have many many others. When we did it, we started at around 6pm and did the lot. I know a lot of people who drink anything between 12-22 pints on a Friday and Saturday night on a regular basis.
There are two things to watch for: first the flagging after about for the fourth or fifth pint which can randomly creep up on you knakcering your chances for the rest of the run and, secondly, the bad pint which simply can stop you in your tracks.
A nice leisurely pace, especially on the 'session ales' and one can go on for hours or if one reached a 24 hour mark one was awarded a 'Major' but they're harder to do these days.
I've done one like it in Glasgow a couple of times.
It's called the Subcrawl because it involves stopping and getting a drink at the nearest pub at every station along the Glasgow subway train route which is circular and the cars used to all be orange in colour, giving it the name the Clockwork Orange.
In Ireland each December quite a lot of people do what's called the Twelve Pubs of Christmas pub crawl. Generally it's a pint in each pub with a lot of groups assigning certain rules to each pub which if you break you have to do a punishment shot, such as not being allowed to go to the toilet in one pub and no pointing in another. If they make it to the end most people will end up doing the twelve pints, a few shots and depending on how much of a drinker they are will stay on in the last pub for a few extra. No shortage of pubs in Dublin to pick between when choosing the route too, probably two or three mains routes that people do but even then different groups will pick different pubs along those routes. Most people do it wearing cheesy Christmas jumpers too.
Combe martin in north devon uk. Longest high street in the country and an epic bar crawl. Cant remember the number of pubs. If you can you havent done it right :)
All you non brits are pansies when it comes to drinking. 12 pints is an average night out. Throw in some shots and a pre match 4 pack of stella and we you have a friday night. You should still be able to get in for an 11 am sharpener the following saturday to watch the footie before a *beep* shower and shave and hit the bars for a Saturday night out. That's 10 hours of hard drinking. Roughly 3-4 pints an hour to warm up until 9 then onto the shots and drinking games. Sunday is a few pints with lunch and an afternoon of boys beer (4%) cos you have work thr next day. Plus you got to find time for the kids later.
Sunday is then a few pints with lunch and an afternoon of boys beers (4%) cos you got work the next morning
It's certainly possible if done over a long enough period of time. We're talking like a 6 hours pub crawl - even for a lightweight drinker. Say if you only have lager or ale in the 4% ABV range - plus - if you drink water in-between that can help you out - as well as maybe eating some snacks to absorb the alcohol.
This summer I'm doing a pub crawl in my hometown of chichester which is twelve pubs. The most I've done is 8 which I've done three times. I'm 18. It's gunna be a challenge :)
The only way I could do 12 pints plus a couple of random shots was if it was an all day drinking session, even then it could well be a bit of a struggle.
After I watched 'The world's end' at the cinema I came up with my own little pub crawl. There are 7 pubs in the general area where I live called 'The George' which I'm planning to visit. I'll be having only half a pint in each as it's about 30/35 mile bicycle ride from first pub to last plus the miles from home to first blood then back home again from the last :D
12 pints is no big deal. I remember my (borderline ?)alcoholic days when I used two have 2 a night after a long day and those were over 10% alcohol. Some watered-down name brand 3-5% brews throughout 10 hours isn't too bad if you're also eating and staying hydrated. Personally, I'd still be quite smashed and probably sleepy by the 9th or 10th pint.
