the banana scene

can't seem to get over the horror of the fact that he was going to use the banana to ...you know. Luckily she was a bit more sophisticated and outspoken than average.
that is awful. I mean it would hurt and might even damage her as it would have to be skin on as the peeled banana would just squish...what the hell was that about? And he used other poor young girls before her...did they have to endure his weird baby talk (i'm your Bubble Up, good grief!)and banana rape? if only young women were educated to the predatory way some people will behave to get what they want from them, it would spare them a lot of hurt and trauma.
"Mom's gonna fix it all soon. Mom's comin' round to put it back the way it oughta be."

reply

Yeah, as other people have mentioned, I'm fairly sure he wasn't interested in 'raping' her with the banana. He was aiming to break her hymen and perhaps let it bleed on the banana (rather than himself).

But that in NO way detracts from the creep factor. Taking a girl's virginity with a fruit is one of the most primitive and painful ways possible! It really did show how sexually immature and skeevy he was. That scene was.. uch.

reply

I knew what he meant, but I seriously thought he was kidding.

reply

Had she seen the size of his willie, she would have taken the banana!!!

reply

Lol! He was too finicky to get bled on. Whoever suggested a cucumber, she was a virgin! She probably didn't have a t**t like a horsecollar!

Get me a bromide! And put some gin in it!

reply

the second I saw this scene I texted both people that suggested this movie to me & said 'what the hell is this...'

I was in total shock that he suggested it & that he was 'surprised' when she said no

awful awful awful

reply

A vagina can be a fearless adversary, he would have been a madman to brave one empty-handed.

I think that bit was included to let us understand he might be a bit of a sicko with some strange ideas about sex, so we're prepared to accept later on that he wasn't simply in love with Jenny.

reply

I'm not understanding the posts that say things like, "He didn't expect her to have sex with the banana; he just wanted to break her hymen with it."

Wouldn't he have to penetrate her with the banana - at least somewhat - in order to break her hymen with it?

Obviously he wasn't going to just screw her with the banana and then end the encounter. But he wanted to break her hymen with the banana, by penetrating her with it. And then have sex with her.

reply

I thought he wanted HER to break her own hymen with the banana before they had sex. Apparently he was a squeamish man.

"Joey, have you ever been in a Turkish prison?"

The movie did have some uncomfortable scenes, a little disturbing if it must be saidSource:Movie Reviews An Educationhttp://moviereviews.noskram.com/2010/03/movie-reviews-an-education

reply

Yes, it had some disturbing things, but I didn't find them gratuitous and thought this was safely in PG-13 territory for the U.S.

i think this scene was only there to show how immature and incoherent david really was.

reply

I totally agree

reply

The scene was included because it really happened. Read Lynn Barber's story in The Guardian.

reply

They were talking about sex, not oral, since the "messy part" would mean hymen breaking. I choose to believe that he was kidding. Otherwise...ick.

I hear the drizzle of the rain. Like a memory it falls.

Of course he was kidding--trying to make the whole situation less serious, and then realizing that his humour didn't work. Her pretending the banana was a phone was her way of finally agreeing to go along with his stupid attempt at humour.

There's no way he could penetrate her with that ripe banana, or even think that he could! He was teasing her; the banana was obviously too soft and too big!
.........

He was not teasing her. She was letting him know the awkward situation was okay when she joked by using the banana as a phone.

Truth be told, I had to see you one more time, even if it was from a distance.

reply

The banana wasn't overripe/soft. It was green on the end.

I think this was a good add on to the scene as it starts to reveal David to be what he really is - exceptionally childish. It was strange he didn't make a scene about waiting an extra night. I think he was in it for the adoration, not sex. this scene proved him to be exceptionally childish and also the way Jenny rejects him makes me think that she is not really all that in love with him, merely in love with his lifestyle.
