It's a pathetic flop.No sequel.

There's no chance in hell this will make 412.000.000 to break even.
Even with HBO max views/subs.The ad campaign for this was massive, add another 50-100Μ for the ads,it actually needs approximately 600M to break even.
So yeah it's a terrible pathetic flop.
Sequels usually make less money 💵 than the original.Dune 2021 flopped hard because it's a vague arrogant borefest. I don't think a sequel will ever happen, unless they want their money drained down the toilet💵💦 🚽 for the shake of Villeneuve's artsy fartsy vanity🤡.
I hope he goes away after this or at least he stays away from iconic sci fi movie projects.Too many flops,Blade Runner 2049 and now this, the dude is incapable of directing a comprehensible and intriguing sci fi epic/blockbuster that is actually fun to watch.

go away you gluttonous whore, you'll never get control of the spice back

It's due to same time release as stream, early leak, and pirates that probably helped hurt its sales. I don't think people look the same way at movies after the pandemic due to having so much time on their hands that they found other ways to watch it now. Everyone wants to live an easy life now.

"Sequels usually make less money than the original."

What????????????????????????

reply

Not always true, but it's very common.

MCU movies are an exception, and Fast/Furious too.

But Star Wars- the first movie of each trilogy made the most- Jurassic Park- each "trilogy" member made less as it went on. In both of those cases- inflation may make it look like later trilogies made more money than earlier trilogies- and maybe they did, 'cuz nostalgia sells more than quality- but within a timeframe- I think it's fair to say "sequels usually make less".

(Harry Potter is all over the place, but the top 2 are #8, and then #1- proving that the first one made more money for 6 sequels, until the 7th sequel topped it)

Objection!

Matrix 2, Terminator 2, Pirates 2, Forzen 2, The Dark Knight 2, The Hunger Game 2, Toy Story 2&3...

I'm hungry, need to eat, have to go, that is all I can think of right now.

The point is: "sequels usually make less." Are you sure?

reply

No! I'm not sure- I didn't do any specific math. There will definitely be exceptions to the rule- whichever rule it might be... but it's my guess that the original poster was correct to say that they usually make less. But for sure I don't know.

In any case- it's far from a guarantee that the next one will make more (or that it can't).

200 million so far just in theaters.

reply

That's a lot for this movie ... where did you hear that?
I think there is the Dune factor, like a lot of science fiction movies that are not well received when they debut but they make tons of money over time. I think Dune (1984) was like that. Perhaps Starship Troopers too. ST was supposed to have been a flop, but over time made money and they made like 3 sequels to it. 3 bad sequels, but I guess they know the fans will see them.

Thanks. Wow, that a lotta spice. And they are going to do 2 more of them.
I was happy to see it on HBOmax for free, or included in the streaming charge,
but fan of Dune as I am, I would not pay to see this movie. It's not bad, it's
just nothing exceptional.

Dune (2021) is a decent film. I think the sequel will be better. https://deadline.com/2021/10/dune-no-time-to-die-venom-china-global-international-box-office-1234861416/
