This will be even worse than Arrival and BR 2049
I can't wait to not see it
shareI loved those movies. They were sci-fi done exquisitely well: cerebral, thought-provoking, imaginative, and contemplative. With such a high bar, I'd be surprised if Dune 2020 was as good.
But I also think the book is a tad overrated (mostly by zealous fans), so, maybe I'm not the right person to guess.
(I don't have the book, I just don't love it).
You might be an idiot. Arrival is complete nonsense ruined by an awful third act and BR 2049
is a prime example of everything wrong with today's movie culture of sequels, reboots, and remakes.
Your opinion on whether or not the book is overrated is invalidated by your shit taste in film,
and even though I've never read it I am sure I can accurately say this new film will not only be worse than the book,
but the Lynch film as well.
The book sucked. I'll be shocked if this latest version of Dune is any better than what has come before.
BR49 was OK. Pretty decent although overrated.
I liked the first half of the book, up until he goes into the pool or whatever and becomes the god-messiah of Dune. After that, it felt like it was moving in fast-forward and skipping over steps of his development as a character.
Ironically, I saw the movie first (the Lynch film, obviously) and thought the same thing, but I assumed the last half had pacing issues because it was glossing over a bunch of stuff from the book, left out for film-necessary brevity. Nope. Read the book: same feeling.
I mean, I get why people like it, it's a fascinating universe, and Herbert created intriguing mythologies and cultures and so forth - and I really like the force field knife fighting where a speedy strike won't work, so close combat requires guile...that's cool - but I felt like it wasn't as well told as it could have been. And I thought that quality was incongruous with the amount of praise that gets heaped on it. I don't want to dump on it too much, though.
I actually think BR2049 is underrated. I thought it was a great way to extend a story without falling into the pitfalls of most sequels these days. They do soft reboots (The Force Awakens) which wind up uninspired and unoriginal, or they ignore the original entirely, or they just lamely trot out the same story and ideas from the first film and hope nobody noticed. BR2049 kept the feel and vibe of the first film, but gave us advances on the world and used a new angle (the POV of a replicant and a hologram girlfriend) to explore "what is a human?", which was the big thing in the first film. It also felt like a logical extension. "Yeah, that is where Decker would be." As opposed to The Force Awakens where they're still rebelling after having control of the galactic Republic. How? Why? Missed it by a mile, guys...
Pretentious, self-aggrandizing, self-fellating, spoon-feeding, nonsensical, pointless and the worst of all - BORING.
I'm sure you'd gush about a Banana taped to a wall since it was an "art" exhibit.
Mmm... I don't know... Duct tape, masking tape, scotch tape...? What kind of banana? Is it a Chiquita? A plantain? How ripe is it?
Like, if it's an almost-ripe blue java banana held in place by two firm strips of white electrician's tape, I could see where that might be a commentary on mankind's technological revolution and the way that tools and culture are intersecting, yet might soon lead to our inevitable downfall - much like an overripe banana slipping from it's formerly-alluring blue skin on ever-more slackening strips of gluey tape.
But if it's anything done with a latundan banana or scotch tape, I mean forget it; clearly there was no thought or soul put into the exhibit.
I'm more optimistic about this one then BladeRunner 2049, which was a good but unnecessary movie (BladeRunner didn't require a sequel that explains things)... Arrival was pretty good, but a bit overhyped...
Dune has never been done properly, according to the novel's fans... So it'll be interesting to see a competent director address it...
Arrival wasn't that bad but BR 2049 was well made but soul-less.
shareI liked Arrival and loved Blade Runner 2049 - prior to these two films I had never understood why everybody went gaga for Villeneuve. I am cautiously optimistic about this, although this is one hell of a difficult novel to adapt. It could go either way. Wouldn’t be shocked if it’s awful.
shareThey went gaga for him because Sicario, Incendies and Prisoners were all really good.
You have shit taste and enjoy his worst films.
gonna be huge pile of mediocre forgettable ding dong
