The Karate Kid (2010) was really damn good. Surpasses original.

So, I just got back from seeing Jaden Smith's first star vehicle The Karate Kid (the movie had been sold out since the 11:15am show) and....wow. I was truly impressed as I only went in with modest expectations. Not only was it a very good remake, it's the best movie so far this summer, and it stands on it's own two feet and surpasses the original in a lot of ways (which one is better will probably be generational. From the standing ovation these kids at the theater I attended gave this film I'm pretty sure from 15 or so on down, it will be this one.) But first off, let me start by saying this:

To anyone who doubts that Jaden Smith can act (which he ironically already proved in The Pursuit of Happyness), is a star, or deserved this movie: See The Karate Kid. I don't care how you see it. Pirated. Bootleg. Or the old fashion way (like I saw it cause I'm cool like that) by buying a frickin' ticket and sitting in an auditorium with a bunch of cheering 10 year olds (I swear I've never seen kids give a movie a damn near standing ovation like they did during this film's finale).

Jaden Smith has just silenced his haters. From here on out, if you don't like Jaden Smith: fine. Whatever petty reason you've given yourself to make you not like an innocent 10 year old. Fine. But you can't say he's not talented. Cause he is. If nothing has proven it to you before, THIS will. He carries the film on his little shoulders, shows leading man qualities (has a 10 year old ever done that?!?!? And Im being serious here). Has a ten year old ever acted in a film and not only carried it but possessed the charm, charisma, quick wit, comedic timing, dramatic presence and physicality of a hero all in the same movie?!?!? I shutter to think, I couldn't think of any leaving the theater. If they have, please point them out to me so I can say bravo to them to.

His performance was truly great and the fact that he did all of his own stunts and clearly learned kung fu and looks not only believable but in command of the craft is some sort of a mini-miracle. This little dude is miniature Will Smith of the highest caliber. He WILL be a star (pun, intended). Only thing can stop that is, well, him. Barring any personal issues, the kid will go far. Very far. He has it all. And as cliche as it may sound the biggest development to come out of the Karate Kid is that "A Star is Born". Don't believe me: watch it for yourself.

But I digress, I only spent so much time on the Jaden issue because all the unwarranted hatred thrown his way is beyond disturbing. I have never seen such vitriolic speech directed towards a kid in my life. Not even the kid from Problem Child and he was a certified a-hole! But anyway, the movie is good. Jackie Chan was surprisingly really good (and I mean really really good like Oscar-nominee good) in a dramatic turn as Dre Parker's mentor. The action was better than the original's and the heart and soul was just as engaging and entertaining. Though lacking the iconic "wax on, wax off"-moment what they do with "jacket on, jacket off" was truly surprising and pretty good stuff when you realize what Mr. Han was really teaching him. Instead of the "Crane Kick" we do have another pose and it's pretty damn good too.

To me, the original will always be special. I remember Daniel-son, and Mr. Miyagi is a fuggin' legend in every sense of the word. I'm actually utterly surprised this remake was so well made and engaging. Even though every one in the theater knew the outcome, everyone was still cheering and/or elated and moved by the movies "big moments". That in itself is pretty impressive. It's like if people were still surprised even though they knew who the killer(s) were in Scream 4 before seeing it. Could you imagine that? Yea, I couldn't either. Which is why I'm surprised at how good this remake was.

Go see it.

I'd rather puncture my eyes than see this. I really don't even want to torrent it. The movie would contaminate my hard drive.

Why would you bootleg a film when it's out in theaters anyhow...?

I am sorry to say but it did not last long where I live at. It was only in the two movie theaters here in Decatur, Illinois for a month. If it was better than the original then why is it not still at the movie theater here in my home town? If it was sold out like where you are at then it would have remained longer in the theater because you know how it is if they are making good money showing the movie they will keep it longer at the movie theater.

They did not do that here where I live at.

Well I remember the third and final Karate Kid with Ralph Machio in it and when I went to the movie theater back in high school it was filled with a lot of my friends and there was hardly anywhere to sit down at in the movie theater. That movie theater was the old General Cinema Theater at Northgate Mall in Decatur, Illinois.

That movie theater is no longer there now because in the late 90's the people who owned that building decided to tear down the movie theater to put a Schnuck's Grocery Store which failed because a couple of years later they closed it down. General Cinema left Decatur and then sold the contract to GKC Cinemas. They kept the place open until the grocery store moved in. Now if I was the people that owned that building I would have left the movie theater there because someone could have moved in there and turned it into a bargain theater. That would have been perfect for Decatur because we do not have one. All we have now is three movie theaters in town. One is the old Hickory Point Mall Movie theater which has turned into like the Northgate Mall movie theater when it was open in town. Hardly no one likes going to that movie theater and the other one that is owned by the same company is The Strand out in Mt. Zion. We have the old AVON which the owner does have some great deals going on there. That is it for us here in Decatur.

Well I am not sure if it is as good as the final Karate Kid movie though with Hillary Swank. That is my honest opinion about it.

I did not see the crowds around the corner like I did back in 1984 for The Karate Kid the original one.

Hope I am not late to the game. I thought this movie was okay at best. Not as good as the original. Definitely not as good as KK2 because most people think it's one of those rare case where the sequel is better than the first. Another is Terminator 2. In a way this movie is a combination of KK1 and KK2.

Jaden and his character were okay. I didn't care when he got ghetto. And he was annoying in other places. Same with his mother. The bully did a good job. Jackie and Mr. Han pretty good.

The movie was longer than needed. Instead of a romance with the girl, make it a strong friendship. Less focus on her violin. No need for 12 year old to fall in love and kiss. A previous poster gave a better example of Mr. Han's story. Instead of Mr. Han and his little break down, a better way to go would be to have Dre deduce it from him drunk and asleep in the beat up car after seeing empty alcoholic bottles and picture of his wife and kid nearby.

I will admit the fight scenes are better but that's because it should be given the time period now and the total flux of many movies to come before it in the states. But the training is crap. It made sense when Daniel-San used his wax on and wax off moves. I don't see how Dre started using those moves after jacket on and off. The fights were good because Jackie's involved and it was shot in China with many natives. The competition was way too big and glamorous. Dre got good and do crazy ancient Chinese movies. The worse was the final kick. So fake and unrealistic. I hate overused of CG and wires for fights. But there were new and cool moves I've never seen too. I almost expected to see a fight between Mr. Han and the Dragon teacher at the end. Glad they didn't because it would have been way too long.

I cringed and was embarrassed at many scenes. Others I would whisper "shut up" to the characters. I would also cover my face when dumb scenes come up. Many people in my theater love it though. They cheered and clapped especially at the competition and after. I am sorry to say they are not true movie goers. Most are youngsters.

What an idiot. The cinematography was better? Are you freakin kidding me? That's just the video quality, not the cinematography. Do you even know what that word means?

My brother recomended this movie. He told me that it was way better than the original. I don't want to offend him, but... The original is a masterpiece next to this slowpace, boring, no chemistry poor acting flick...

His acting capabilities are limited that of what you would expect a son of a major motion picture actor to be...acting like his father. Do not mistake what every son on this planet can do with true talent. Just because Will Smith's mannerisms and style are THAT marketable doesn't mean even junior doppelganger impressions should be considered amazing.

While I can assess your excitement with that of what the producers must have behaved like when they were green-lighting this greedy, soulless machine, I will give him credit for the obvious rigorous training required for this role.

To each their own. IMHO and as a long time martial arts teacher, I believe the initial Kid was the better by a distance. It was more believable and set in a better time and place and seemed more plausible. Also, whomever suggested that Chan was better than Morita, who was nominated and should have won the Best Supporting Actor Award, is to me ludicrous.

The arts scenes may be a bit better in the latest one, but then again when starting and moving up the ranks at an incredible pace one will appear stiff and uncertain. You become smoother as you work longer and perfect your own styles.

To me the original stands head and shoulders above this newer version.

As you said, to each his own...(Or rather, to each his or her own).

I like both films, but I prefer the remake.

And yes, I think Chan should be nominated.

I'm sure I can point to many ludicrous Academy Award nominees in the past; however, IMO, Chan isn't one of them.

I haven't seen the movie yet.

However I can't see how this movie can be better than Toy Story 3.

That's just impossible.

I'm so spoiler sensitive, I don't even want to watch Toy Story 3. I heard about the nature of the ending. Now I will wait for the DVD.
