I've been reading through all of the posts, and I don't think anyone mentioned the mother of all conspiracy thrillers: The Manchurian Candidate. The original 1963 one of course, not the ghastly remake.

If you enjoyed the movie, I would highly recommend reading the book. The Ghost by Robert Harris.

I can't help but think about similarities between the Ghost writer and The girl with the dragon tattoo. Though not a political thriller TGWTDT is similar in terms of lead characters being writers, island, weather, cinematography, screenplay (?), lead girl character initiating one night stand with lead made character, etc..
