Movies like The Ghost Writer
I normally can't stand political thrillers but this movie was surprisingly great. Would love to check out films in a similar vein. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I can recommend several movies with a similar vibe:

3.Eyes Wide Shut: Stanley Kubricks last movie, about a Doctor whose erotic longings leads him into a secret society, and soon ensnares him in a lurid murder mystery.
4.Zodiac: Based on the true story of the intense hunt for a notorious serial killer joining together two psychological obsessions, one mans desire to kill, and anothers desire to discover the truth.
5.Tinker,Tailor,Soldier,Spy: Cold War thriller about the hunt for a russian agent within the MI6.

9)The Hour:A Tv-mini-series,and cold war thriller. Follows a fictious investigative news show on Britains BBC,and a journalist that stumbles upon secrets that threaten to upset the political landscape.
"The Quiet American" (2002)

There is an earlier version, but in this case the remake, which is closer to the original book, is better.
hi
I'd also highly recommend The Conversation (1974) by coppola and of course JFK of stone plus
1- " I as in Icarus (French: I... comme Icare)" a 1979 French thriller film directed by Henri Verneuil starring Yves Montand. The film's plot is based on the Kennedy assassination and subsequent investigation. There is something in this film which fascinates me...it has one of the most brilliant and unfortunately underrated scores of Ennio Morricone.
2- some of Frederick Forsyth film adaptations including The Fourth Protocol (1987)starring Michael Caine and also Pierce Brosnan
The Ninth Gate or Zodiac for starters.
share'The Ninth Gate' is childish compared to The Ghost Writer. The look and feel are very similar otherwise. Ewan McGregger completely overshadows Johnny Depp.
'Spartan' was a good suggestion. Val Kilmer is a high-level military intelligence guy who is assigned to an investigation only to uncover a conspiracy. Feels like a Grisham story except it's Mamet.
'Frantic' is similar in theme to Ghost Writer, but the tone is a bit different. Frantic is great so I highly recommend it.
'Double Jeopardy' isn't political but has a similar feel (on the water, conspiracy/mystery), and is pretty intriguing. Plus Ashley Judd looks great in it and Tommy Lee Jones is doing what he does best.
AMC's 'The Killing', especially Season 2, has the same rainy, grey tone and is a 24-episode mystery. Season 1 is a bit drab but Season 2 kicks it up a notch.
From what I understand, AMC's 'Rubicon' is supposed to be a political thriller/mystery/conspiracy type of series. Only lasted one season, and it looked to have the same dry/grey tone as TGW.
'Twin Peaks' is a classic mystery series which has a lush mountain town atmosphere, lovable characters, comedy and darkness beautifully blended together, and a very intriguing supernatural undertone. The mystery is solved halfway through and then the series begins to fall apart, but they wrap it up with a very intense last few episodes, including the climactic episode which is either loved or hated but always gets a strong reaction. The film, 'Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me' is also great. Much darker and more brutal, less comedic than the series. It's a prequel and it gives away the mystery so watch it after the series.

If you liked this, check out the Manchurian Candidate, it'll blow your mind.
For every lie I unlearn I learn something new - Ani Difranco
I'm not sure if this has been recommended yet, but do check out Michael Clayton. It's more corporate than politics (though who can say where that line is drawn nowadays), but has a similar pacing and level of characterisation. Good stuff.
