Has a kind/decent person ever died on this show?

This isn't meant to be a rhetorical question. I'm just wondering. If all the people who die on this show are unbearable and awful, the moral of 1000 Ways to Die must be that only jerks die in freak accidents.

Have you heard the one where the young kid gets off of the school bus, crosses around behind it, trips on his shoe-laces that a bully untied, and gets ran over as the driver backs up? Me neither.

well off the top of my head i can think of 2 where the person who died wasn't a complete a**hole to everyone:

- the one with the kid at the party that was kinda just telling people intelligent stuff instead of having fun and got hit with a stray piece of meteor through the chest.

- the one where the guy was supposed to be getting x-rays, got loaded in the machine and the doc & nurse went into the control room, had sex and accidentally fried the guy w/rays from bumping the button too much and not paying attention.

The lady victim of a home invasion who was bound with tape across her mouth and died from choking on her own vomit due to the robber's bad breath...

But to the OP: I have noticed what you're talking about during this latest season. It seems like everyone who is dying is a jerk and deserves it. Not that I want to see good people suffer, but it has almost gotten to be annoying.

The guy who drowned in his waterbed WAS a jerk, in the sense of a dumb guy behaving obnoxiously.

There was one episode where a rabbi is in Hawaii and trying to impress a hula dancer that he has developed a crush on. He tried doing a fire dance, and caught himself on fire. I think he is one of the very few people on there that I felt sorry for.

There is the one who died while dreaming and the girl who was in a decompression chamber and the janitor opened the door.

reply

Yes, I remember that one. That death was totally freaky!

reply

Don't worry Shining, it couldn't have happened that way. She would have imploded, not EXploded. Still horrible, though.

reply

I haven't seen the episode, but what you say is factually wrong.
A decompression chamber is also called a hyperbaric chamber. It's the same thing.
You get put in a decompression chamber when you have been on a deep dive, and you need time to decompress. So the pressure in that chamber is higher than the normal atmospheric pressure. Hence, hyperbaric "over-pressured" chamber.

So if the door to a compressed decompression chamber gets accidentally opened, you would not implode. An implosion is if your body is underpressured, and the outside pressure crushes it. Like what happens to a submarine that goes too deep.

If the door of a decompression chamber is opened, the air would rush OUT of the chamber, and the person inside it would suddenly have a higher internal pressure than the outside pressure. I'm not sure if he would "explode", but his blood would get filled with bubbles, and his eyes might pop out, and things like that.

reply

Ok, he would explode on the INSIDE. That was my real meaning.

hey, I can answer this accurately because I worked on the show and they sort of explained the shows model... they don't want the audience to ever feel bad for the people dying, so they change the deaths to desensitize the audience to the people... they make them stupid, or perverts, or bad people in some way so that we just don't really care.. does that make sense?

For instance, I was in DIRT NAP, as the girl getting proposed to on the hay ride. The original death (it was real, they all are, they just change them), had the boyfriend teasing the girlfriend by having his friends popping out and scaring her. She got upset and he left her alone.. he popped back up and scared her, she had a reflex to hit him off the hay ride, and he fell under the wheels and got ran over. They decided that it would make the audience feel sorry for the girl, for having to live with the guilt of killing her boyfriend, so they changed it so that it was her ex stalking her and her current boyfriend jumped up and punched the ex. It was a way of detaching the audience from the characters emotions.

Sorry for the long answer... they don't have good people die because they don't want the audience to pity them.. it would probably damage their ratings if people started feeling bad when they watched the show. haha.

Wow Angela, cool info! But I hope they don't stick to that exclusively; I didn't even notice them sticking to only one pattern, mainly because there still ARE regular non-jerk people dying. And still, a lot of the deaths I wouldn't wish even on jerks, like the food critic who died and the woman with the scissors in her stomach. I REALLY hope they don't try to either become more outrageous or disenstitize people further; it's not a good thing to do.

The guy in the bar who tried a trick with pool balls. He would put pool balls down his throat and move them up and down before taking them out as a party trick. He unfortunately took the cue ball, which was larger and had a hard time getting it back up. It kept going down his throat. He choked to death.

He wasn't a douche. Just some guy in a bar. Didn't beat up anybody or steal cash or anything like that.
