what's with the ugly guys plus hot women couples?

I mean seriously is this to make all those retarded middle aged losers think they have a chance to get with good looking women?
What a load of crap we are subjected to. Its about time there ugly, old guys stopped getting cast, they where both like 20 years older. Whats up with that?
Disgusting, like totally.

Once men are married, they often let themselves go. Women often keep looking good as it's expected of them. Life's unfair.

It reflects the reality experienced by most successful Hollywood men (and the vast majority of successes ARE male, in every related profession), in that they wind up pursued by beautiful, often younger women whatever their own attractiveness level in terms of age/looks--because power is the most powerful lure of all. Not to put down the women (and men--it's similar in "cougar" and gay dynamics) who take advantage--they wouldn't get anywhere if the men in question weren't willing to fall for/exploit them, often abandoning their original spouses for a "newer edition." This movie is emblematic just in that ALL the couples in an ensemble comedy consist of personable but one only kinda goodlooking male and hot (whether roughly same-aged or much younger) female.

What's weird is the movie doesn't admit this imbalance, as if it were normal amongst the everyday U.S. middle-class. Which is why I say it reflects the experience of its male Hollywood creators, who possibly don't realize how divorced from real life their own dating/relationship histories are. Of course they can score women much fitter (and typically younger) than themselves. They've made it! Whereas tons of beautiful women struggle to get a toe-hold in in the industry at any moment in time. I don't think "Couples Retreat" is being hypocritical--I think it's just reflecting a reality its makers are too isolated by by now to realize is "real" only to a highly privileged, usually wealthy minority.

I agree in a way. But all films are fantasies. Sometimes they shake the camera to make it seem more real (I hate that), but all films are just entertainment.

Because in Hollywood, men are allowed to get old, be ugly and still act. Women have to somehow look young and hot forever, otherwise their careers are gone, minus a very select few.
The film industry is mind-blowingly sexist. There are tons of unattractive actors out there compared to incredibly small number of unattractive actresses.

Because ugly fat guys are funny.

not any more or less than ugly fat women

20 years older?

Vince Vaughn = 39. Malin Akerman = 31.

Jon Favreau = 43. Kristin Davis = 44.

Jason Bateman = 40. Kristen Bell = 29.

Faizon Love = 41. Kali Hawk = ?.

So one couple could be around 20 years difference but that's set up that way on purpose in the movie. In one couple the woman is actually older. In the other two the rl age difference is 8 and 11 years.

lol Carlos Ponce is 37. Ewww, he's 7 years younger than Kristin Davis. Scott Burn is even younger. Ewww.

In the couples there were some obvious imbalances between hotness (or rather general fitness levels) but I don't think age has much to do with it. Davis is hot and she's 44. Most women I know think Bateman is hot.

I noticed this in the film and it's just ridiculous. When they were on the beach all the girls had beautiful figures and the guys weren't attractive!
But it always seems to be the case. Beautiful girls go with unattractive guys, hardly ever the other way round.
And, in the case of Hugh Jackman, all the girls still insult him for being with an unattractive woman. "Ughhh what's he doing with her?!" You just can't win!

Honestly, I find women more attractive than men. I'm not a lesbian and I think my partner is very attractive. But still, I think women are naturally more beautiful and nice to look at than men are. Sounds weird but I'd rather see a naked woman than a naked man, though I'm not sexually attracted to women.
Strange!

reply

heh Given a choice I'd rather see a naken woman too.

But seriously, I agree with you. I think another part of it is that women are under more pressure to look good than men are. A lot of guys will age and just be like 'Ehh, I look how I look' while women are getting bombarded by beauty mags and all kinds of *beep* urging them to fight aging and look awesome all the time.

I don't think Vince, Jon, or Jason Bateman are unattractive. They are by no means ugly. And actually Kristin Davis and Jon Favreau are about the same age, and Vince isn't that much older than Malin Ackerman. Nor is Bateman that much older than Kristen Bell.

I know who you are. I love you. I love everything about you that hurts.

What, no love for Faizon Love!?

Dammit! Where's my PatrĂ³n?!

reply

Well, no offense to Faizon, but he's really not the most attractive guy on the planet...But he is really funny!

i don't see the age diference that big ...my mom is 11 years youger than my dad ...he's not rich ,nor (by my standards) handsome ... he is on the other hand very well read ,walking encyclopedia, good sense of humor... so personality does go a long way
And yes i am from europe.
And the common mentality is that 4-6 years older guy's are preferred (recommanded) for husbands

Now for the beauty difference
good looking girls are usaly attracted to not so good looking guy's with powerful personality ...when is time to chose a husband

... and it actualy works both ways
in live we usuly preferred and seek that wich we do not have

butt ...if its only copulation ...YEAH WE PREFER HOT CHICKS :)

and stop blaming the male gender for pushing body over presonality philosophy...it is primaraly your fellow sisters ho do that

why take the hard road when we can reach our goals with the easy one

I watched two movies today - Couples Retreat and The Rebound. In the first one, there were several couples where the man was noticeably older than the woman (the actors'/actresses' real-life ages might not be SOOO far apart, but COME ON, do you actually mean to say Vince Vaughn and Malin Akerman look the same age?). However, no one made a big deal out of it, it wasn't even mentioned except for Faizon Love's girltoy being only 20 (but they weren't a steady couple anyway) and it was treated as completely natural. Now read the IMDB summary for The Rebound: "In New York City, a single mom captivates her new neighbor, a much younger man". Catherine Zeta-Jones and Justin Bartha are only 9 years apart (born in 1969 and 1978, respectively) and neither of them looks old or haggard or bloated (cough*unlike basically all the male leads of Couples Retreat*cough), yet the whole premise of The Rebound is "LOL look at that crotchety old cougar woman robbing the cradle, hardy har har" (though the actual movie itself was more sympathetic to the whole situation, but the mere fact that a woman dating a man 9 years younger than her is soo exceptional that it's the central point of a movie should tell you quite a bit about Hollywood's ageism and sexism).

reply

You pretty much covered it. The casting was obviously -as are most movies - meant to massage the egos and keep the attention of the males in the audience. The yoga instructor made up for it though. Nice, very nice. : )

reply

It is a bit disappointing that many movies like this have plenty of eye candy for the male audience, but hardly any for the women. Us women watch movies too!

The women were all tanned, toned and wore bikinis in most scenes (and they looked great!). Whereas the guys were flabby, average-looking and wore baggy clothes in most scenes - even in the water. Though I must admit, I don't think I'd want to see any of them with their shirt off. (with the exception of Jason Bateman. He's quite good looking, imo).
