I realize that if the movie wanted us to know what he said, it would have let us hear him... but it's driving me crazy anyway :^)

The same thing Bill Murray said to Scarlett in Lost in Translation.
Here the point wasn't what he said, but that she saw them and assumed they were being intimate, which set up the drama that followed.
