Do you think Mel actually tried while directing this or just phoned it in for the money?

I plan on seeing it as Mel is one of my favorite actors/directors and while I like the execution, the trailer does feel kind of bland and doesn't look like something Mel would normally direct. I'm worried that this is a project he only took to help out his buddy Mark and did it for the cash.

No no it's produced and financed by Icon Productions / Mel Gibson himself. MW accepted the lead due to his close connection to Mel and their religious believes.
Im pretty sure Mel is firing on all cylinders here.

reply

Didn't realize it was financed for Mel. That gives me more hope this will be a solid action movie.

I can't imagine in any way Mel Gibson would need money.

"Passion of the Christ" - talk about a bonanza. He self financed it, which means he took all the money in the end and I think it made around 600 million.

Wahlberg, I don't know. He, as far as I know (not a fan of his), has been a steady working actor for years. But who knows, maybe he is broke.

Yeah, I'm with you - always enjoyed Mel's work. He had some rough years but , going back to Christ...

How does it go, "let he who hasn't sinned cast the first stone" - something like that. Gibson fu(*^%ed up, he owned up, and has made a nice comeback. Good for him.

I mean, he's done quite a couple low budget straight to VOD action movies lately where his role is supporting instead of a lead, but even in those he still actually tries to give a good performance. I can't imagine any reason he would be doing those besides the money though.

reply

Ok fair enough....in fact I saw one of them a few nights back...

"On the Line" I think it was called.

ANyway, it is possible Mel is taking on any acting work he can get for three reasons...

- To continue to build up his new, good name

- To show he can still do it

And #3 - Practice - work on his craft.

Or, maybe he does it only for the check. It's certainly possible. Who knows???

You can only speculate.

reply

I thought On The Line was decent for the first 2/3rd's, but the ending was so bad it kind of ruined the whole thing for me.

reply

Probably a 'director-for-hire' gig just for some quick cash. Which seems hard to believe if his reported net worth is accurate.

reply

This looks really bad. He probably did it out of boredom.

reply

I don't think he's directed a bad movie yet though

reply

Nope, he did it because he wanted to make a fun-type action flick, “a pleasant distraction-type film,” to give people a chance to turn off from the stress of life and enjoy something….

Paraphrased from a recent interview, this was given after his house burned to the ground btw.

reply

It still looks bad tbough. I hope I'm wrong.

reply

lol, I hope you’re wrong too.

Mel usually gives it his all. So, this should be good.

reply

I’m hopeful, Mel hasn’t directed a lemon yet.
