Religious propaganda?

So we have a new heroe who wants to fight evil because (as he says) in the 1600´s nobody cared to fight it. Evil pagans ruled the world. But thanks to God and Solomon, the good guys, they'll get rid of evil (still waiting).

Mmmm, a little problem here. In the 1600's there were a lot of wars among Christians, they were killing each other because they thought the others were evil. Chrisitians ruled Europe and Christians were killing innoncent people. Not only that, we had the Inquisition killing more innocent people. We had a lot of saviours helped by God (or so they thought).

You may say "it's an alternative world". Yes, an alternative world created by someone very religious who wants to make us think that religion solves everything. Well, he must look back at history.

Robert E. Howard was not a particularly religious man. If you actually bothered to look up the character and read the books you'll see Howard was making pulp fiction dark fantasy...just like his Conan the Babarian character.

I'm an atheist and very big critic of religions - especially the murderous religious of Christianity (which has most reformed now, at least in the west) and Islam. Soloman Kane is an action movie with a supernatural element. I view the Christian deity the same way as I view the Greek deities - legends and myths...so a movie like this is just pure entertainment.

The movie even shows Soloman being healed by "evil pagans" and if you read the books one of his strongest allies is an African shaman...

some people hate god, or the thought of christianity, so much they will at every chance try to find something to complain about. Seems strange to hate something so much they deny so vigorously.

reply

People hate and dislike many things. Many Christians spend hours bashing gay people even when they don't know any. Some people bash cultures they know little about.

I know for a fact that there are some very hateful non-religious people out there...just as there are some very hateful religious people too.

Don't be quick to assume criticism is an attack on belief and keep in mind most major religions contain attacks on other beliefs and non-belief in general in their very scriptures without ever giving people the chance to defend their point of view.

I can't believe this has become an 11 page thread. I can't believe people are taking it this seriously.
I mean, it had a fire demon in it, for fook's sakes....

Why not? Just because something is fantasy doesn't mean it shouldn't be taken seriously.

True enough, but some times a cigar is just a cigar.

Holy cack, I can't believe someone even started this thread, personally I thought this was an excellent movie. As an atheist I had no concerns over it being religious propaganda because it is a movie, a movie dammit. I swear I have lost some brain cells reading posts on these forums from people arguing over who would win in a fight punisher vs electra but I swear this is the stupidest opening post ever and whoever started it should be ashamed of themselves. Off topic while I thought the movie was great I do find it hard to take a hero from Devonshire seriously, he just made me want custard.

I hope this ends up on the last page since IMDB nests replies in the middel of the message board...

Anyways, I feel the following posts express everything I would've said:

Dain, Vangaurd_intellix, Acronomer, justonefyx, One Man Army and ThereaDoctorDeath.

I'll be upfront and say I'm a Christian.

Simply put, I completely agree with Dain. If anything, just about any portrayal of Christianity in Hollywood works against Christianity. I don't see how this would be pro-Christianity if said hero is relying on things obviously condemned in Christianity to defeat evil instead of the things real Christianity would use like prayer, calling on God, rebuking in the name of the Lord, etc.

Also, I would highly appreciate it if people who try to use the crusades, inquisition, etc as ammunition against religion more specifically Christianity would do more homework before spouting it out or taking a professor's word at face value.

Also, would be nice of them to admit the atrocities committed by other religions from time to time and even non-beleiving systems such as Communism from time to time or secular government as well. Atrocities like human sacrifice, mass murder, war led by other religions, the fact that the crusades were fought by TWO religions and murder and evil was committed by BOTH sides...

That would be highly appreciated, but a bit too much to ask for in this time of hypocritical cries for tolerance...

The internet is full of little ravers like amtico1. They all have one thing in common, they hate Christianity with a passion and jump at any chance, however illogical, to rant about it. Just take this thread for example.

Got it wrong. Read the books.

I'm sorry, I might be unfamiliar with the exact meaning of the word 'propaganda', but, by knowing that the director usually expresses his own opinion on a matter, by travelling to the nearest cinema, and by paying a certain amount of money for the ticket you obviously are choosing to see this movie and to agree or disagree with the director, so it's simply not the case you being brainwashed into something you would disagree on if you would have known better. So the term you used must be incorrect.
Christianity was part of our culture for 2000 years, without this religion there would be no art, no humanism, no European or American societies, cultures, ideologies, at least not in this form. There would be no atheism, liberalism, America would probably still be undiscovered, or ignored. You can't propagate the very basis of the society you live in. In my opinion the whole thesis is unbelievably stupid.
Americans should really stop playing with words like propaganda, and nazi and all the terms they have no idea about but still are referring to all the time.
