Why the hate?

I don't understand why people don't like this movie. I am not a huge fan of ballet but I found the movie mesmerizing and beautiful. Arronofsky did a wonderful job with this. One of my favorite movies ever (hence the username). But what do people not like about this movie?

Some like it some don't
I wouldn't give it that much bad criticism but what I can say is that there is a lot of overrated [s]hit by certain people and they always take digs on movies like this so I can agree with the poster that said some people just refuse to understand it.

This movie is cheap for two reasons. The first is it chose to go the crazy route so every weird scene or confusing scenes can be attributed to the character being crazy so that explains everything.

The second is people who think they understand this movie and all the crazy scenes so they must be just as deep.

OK those are my short reasons but there was another poster who outlined this movie as being cheap and cliche very well. I'll try to rephrase everything she said again below.

The movie chose to go the dark route just to shock people because if it's dark then it must be good. That's quite cliche to begin with. Very similar to the movie The Butterfly Effect. Everything can be explained because Nina is crazy so it didn't happen. We've seen it all before. Why do you supposed there are so many threads with people asking "did this happened? did that happened? what happened blah blah?" Of course people who claim to understand everything because you interpreted the way you want it. That's lazy writing and directing. A clear answer is needed.

Then there are the cliche characters. Nina is the pretty much the virginal innocent up and coming ballerina. Lily is the rebellious and naughty new friend. Mom is strict and trying to live her dream through Nina. The bitchy rival. The aging ballerina who can't stand to be replaced and hurts herself. The director who thinks of his dances as sex objects and want to screw them all.

Everything is sex sex sex. The director encourages Nina to masturbate. Nina and Lily getting it on anywhere they can get to experiment. Mom might be sexually abusing her. The director fxcking all his subjects including the aging dancer. So yeah sex and violence sell.

The idea that Nina has to go through pain to become the black swan to the point of killing herself is crap. It's like to can't be what you are on stage unless you can be it first in life blah blah.

There's the cheap camera works where it was up to her face the entire time while shes dancing and then BAM!!!! It zooms out to show the critical scene.

I am amazed I was able to remember that much. But the other poster was more articulate. So if you are that person come forward to claim your piece.

i don´t hate it. I just felt bored with it and, in my opinion, doesn't deserve the hype it got. But i respect everyone else´s tastes....
For me it´s way overrated.

I didn't like it because of its clear intellectual inferiority to his other works while looking much better (but hey, large budgets do wonders) and the message it ultimately delivered to me, demonizing liberated women. Nina would never have suffered so much if she had tried to become more like the Black Swan.
