(SPOILERS) OK, I will qualify that. Completely unrealistic behaviour by all the main characters - 1. professional army personnel and other interrogators bickering in front of the prisoner, 2.a specialist torturer who can hit an army guy with a metal bar and not be reprimanded - who answers to no one. 3.The top military guy on the scene refuses to be present in the gymnasium for most of the movie. 4. A terrorist who wants to be caught and tortured. 5. The torturer's wife who admires his work because she lived through atrocities in Albania. 6.The torturers side kick who is cold as ice, except for children who he lovingly protects. 7. a terrorist who is about to decimate the USA claiming to be a loyal American
I qualified my statement with evidence. Why don't you try to qualify yours. But I guess a personal attack seems about right for someone who likes this crap-ola movie.
It got the high rating because it is standard issue anti-American Hollywood crap. It was also professionally done and had recognizable stars. All of that is going to resonate with the generally left of center IMDB crowd. Personally, I gave it a 3. It was moderately tense and entertaining, but too stupid for words.
1. There are 3 nuclear bombs which are putting millions and millions of lives in danger, and they're desperate to find out where they are. 2. There are 3 nuclear bombs which are putting millions and millions of lives in danger, and they're desperate to find out where they are. 3. He doesn't want to have anything to do with the torturing. It was expressively noted, even if you were watching with no volume. 4. The characters themselves ask the very same question, I'm started to doubt you actually watched the film now 5. It is never stated that she 'admires' his work, so I dont know where you've gotten that from. It is, however, stated that she was raped and tortured, and in turn killed and tortured those who wronged her, so naturally she believes that there are some people who deserve to be tortured, which is why her and H bonded together. Have you never felt a connection with someone whom you've shared a strong common interest/goal? 6. Everyone has their threshold, which is exactly the point this movie is making. The threshold of every character in this movie is tested, the army general, the colonel, the assistant director, Charles, Brody, Younger and, yes, Alvarez. And with each we find out what their limitations are, the general wants nothing to do with it and walks away, the colonel feels the same but is concerned about the bombs, the assistant director wants anything done to find the bombs, and the others call a halt when it comes to the children. Like H said, he would have to do something unthinkable to get Younger to talk. 7. He never claims to be a loyal American, he says he's an American citizen. Numerous times throughout the film he remarks that his name is Yussef, not Steven Arthur Younger. He does everything possible to distance himself from anything related to his American life.
Now, the only way I can believe that you did want the film, would be if you were either deaf or blind. You have obviously missed the majority of dialogue, and what you were left with, you were unable to realize the meanings behind the words. You really think their actions are completely unrealistic? Answer me this, what would you do if you knew someone had kidnapped your family and hidden them away somewhere and that person was caught. Would you torture him to find out where your family is? Would you stop someone else from doing the same? Would you want to kill his family so he knows what you're going through? Now what if is wasnt just your family, but everyone you've ever known and loved? How far would you go, or let someone go in order to protect them?

In fact, the way Alvarez started punching in on H showed that the whole 'cold as ice' thing was a facade (I guess it always is).

That... is not entirely true. He was pretty adamant about being proud of his country, being loyal, etc. His tyrade against Brody is a good example. As is his speech to the president.

It's true he claims to be a loyal american. I figured his goal was to "fix" the americans future behavior towards others ("his") country. Sort of like if the government opresses the people, it's the loyal people's job to fight against the government. But in turn, that could be seen as the people were rebels or terrorists, right? I liked that facet of it anyway.
Good points, it depends what kind of movie you are looking for and what are your expectations, when you put the dvd on and start to watch a James Bond movie and it turns out to be Unthinkable,,, you are definitely disappointed. However this movie is beyond action flick, its about what is your philosophy of life and what you believe you are living for. And H doesn't believe in god.
mat_m_eagle laid it out very well. Then he asked what would I do. I would roll out a large size meat grinder and start with making the bomber's left hand into hamburger to feed to the dogs. Then I would bring out his kids and start to torture them in the same way. The bad guys chop off heads and think nothing of it. To counter that, some say, torture puts us on the same level and I say so what? I would pull out all the stops to save millions of innocent people from being vaporized. But then, I am not a wimpy left winger.

Just want to say that as a weepy left winger I'd be right next to you, to cover for you In the " aggressive interrogation" when you need bathroom breaks, sleep...food.
This isn't about what " wing" you belong to. See what has me agreeing that sometimes torture is appropriate is there is a ticking clock.
If I had all the time In the world ya... treat it Like " he has rights bla bla bla"
The issue for me is 30 Million lives hang in the balance. And there is a countdown.
Torture and /or kill two kids to save the lives of millions? Why is there even a debate?

You said it well mat. People who are unwilling to admit that a situation like that in Unthinkable are willfully blind in my opinion. The same type of people who try to deny that freedom is repressed in Iran, the same type of people who believe IS is a "jay-vee team," the same type of people who believe everything will be ok if we all just "get-along."
Well put my friend.

Although I am against terrorism, domestic and foreign, and do not accept the way North America (USA and Canada in particular) has allowed so many Islamic people to enter, people who are so openly ironic and disrespectful to their own religion (Islamic men and WOMEN in a more serious case who drink alcohol, are allowed to drive, dress inappropriately, and so much more breaking of their principals and values) and who show their "ways" so openly only because they are free to do so in these countries, these above questions are a lie. Americans DO torture, DO rape, DO kill children and innocent people, and DO lie about just on unjust causes as long as it gets them a result. They have practiced this everywhere they have been present at. It's still a game of power and world domination, and anything is allowed.
Stop saying crap-ola. It sounds really lame. Also, the events of the film are "top secret", implying that if this WERE possible, for the government to secretly use torture methods, we wouldn't know of it. The rest of what you said was just stupid, he's a terrorist. He's insane, you can't assume he'll be logical.
What's all this shouting? We'll have no trouble here
yes, i think this was badly done and gave it a 4 out of 10. but there is a truth about it; when yousef says that americans kill 53 people every day, actually is way more than that. americans DO torture and EUA is still invading countries and killing thousands/millions (including women and children) for money and power. maybe we should have more yousefs around.
Really bad ending for the released version that was shown on TV. They end it without showing if the 4th bomb exists and whether it goes off. I read where the extended version for DVD has the 4th bomb go off.
And with millions of lives at stake, I can't believe US anti-terrorist operatives would have backed off killing a couple kids. We do that hundreds of times a year where kids are collateral damage when blowing up terrorists with UAV missiles.
