had my blueberry nights been in chinese, it might have been far better

wong kar wai's style and stories are uniquely asian and it is just difficult to see these hollywood actors (except for racheal weiszz) in his movie. had been faye wong or maggie chung are in this film, this might have been very breathtaking...

don't get me wrong guys, i still admire wong and his movies for the rest of my movie viewing life :)

I think I know what he means - I felt the film was so awkward, mainly because of the strained dialogues. Norah Jones is just no actress. I agree with you on Strathairn, he was brilliant, but the whole thing just... seemed like it was made by a foreigner. The long silences, the gut-wrenching awkwardness - I just couldn't relate, this does not seem to be part of our Western reality. So if the cast were Chinese, you might forgive more, because, hey, it's probably their culture...

in other wong kar wai's film those are set in China, the stories are told in a totally different way.Chinese people like to hide their emotion.they can't do things as directly as characters in this movie, though it may be a little hard for you to believe a girl tries to say goodbye to her past in this way.In China, most people think the movie is not as long-lasting as his other works.you can take it as wong's experiment on trying to tell the story in a American style.

In some ways kinda true. Different culture, different attitudes towards romance and the such. Imagine Bollywood themes with American actors, it'd be a site to watch, but not quite the same.

But its not really the fact that they were western actors, and how they could not somehow fit the role of an asian script. I like to think of it as somehow flawed writing of the movie.

For example, Infernal affairs made into The departed...that was brilliant.
A different flair for both films still.

The HK one slightly focused more on the undercover cop and he had a "non-confirmed relationship" status with the psychiatrist.
That "we like each other, but we do nothing about it, but somthing is special" type thing is more abundant in Asian movies i find.

The departed, was basically a birds eye view,a grand spectacle of all the events, and like most american endings, its humourous and makes you feel good at the end.

Both very good movies.

I think the movie was fine. WKW's characters are always awkward. Always. People are awkward. Always. The feeling of the movie was different if anything because it was working to a happy ending and wasn't about coping with something, but seeking something.

it is easier for a foreign movie to get by with a lack of plot the first time around through cause youre a bit busy reading

WKW asked Gong Li to play RW's character in the dubbed version in Chinese. She was amazing. I am sure he would have cast GL if it was Chinese

No. English speakers finally understood Wong Kar Wai has nothing that great to say.

His mystery, subtlety, lies in the fact he is foreign not in the actual substance of the work.

Voiltare said: anything too stupid to be said is sung.

Which is true. Foreign film makers and English speaking musicians get away with some atrociously stupid and banal thoughts hidden behind their “sound” or in this case subtitles aided by lush visuals.
