Ricky Gervais: Yay or Nay?

Ok then, for me Rickey Gervais was the least enjoyable part in this movie. Mind you I went off him a bit when he completely bombed at the Diana concert(Take That could so still do another song)

But I wondered how you felt, so please do tell me, for you was it a Yay or a Nay?

My vote: Nay!

NOT MY DAUGHTER, YOU BITCH!

reply

A big YAY!

It's interesting most of the people who Nay'd him disliked the film as a whole aswell. Strange correlation there, but I thought that it was immensely enjoyable and brilliantly done, for that budget.

I really liked the British production feel of it and the apparent lack of evident studio involvement. Shame it wasn't distributed well enough to get the monetary dues it rightly deserves.

p.s De Niro was off the hook. Great seeing him doing a role like this, mostly because we rarely do.

reply

Nay.

As usual, it was like watching David Brent in a costume. Can't stand the man.

She's so dull, c'mon rip her to shreds...

reply

Yay. I'm not really a Gervais fan, sometimes he makes me laugh but usually he's just the same as always. Truthfully, although he performance wasn't anything new or unusual, he made me laugh harder than the ever has before. There were quite a few of those moments in this movie, part of the reason I loved it.

Teenage angst has paid off well, now I'm bored and old...

reply

Yea!!!

He was great... You have to like British comedy to understand.

I detest Gervais, but he was alright in this. Didn't really detract from the story or anything...

reply

I thought his character was great. Both he and DeNiro saved this movie for me. All the other characters were about as flat as Pfeiffer's droopy witch bags...

When I saw this in the cinema there was a smattering of applause and a number of people cheered when Ferdy got killed...

Gervias is a bit like Marmite..you either love him or hate him..there's no half measures

reply

Yay - Gervais and Miller were the two things putting me off seeing this film. So I was greatly pleased when he got stabbed and she got demonised.

Why do people so frequently get told to "read the book" on a movie database?

reply

Nay Nay Nay

As several PP's have said The Office was brilliant but that is the only character he plays.

Other than him, I loved this film.

I respect that different people like different things especially in comedy however... Ricky Gervais is completely lost on me! I don't find him funny and I can't understand those that do but I guess he's just not my type of humour.

Unfortunately it's an uncomfortable funny for me - I don't like laughing at him, I just end up feeling mildly depressed. If you can laugh at him with no guilt (a bit like a clown) you have no problem! But somehow I think he's being himself and that's not funny, it's sad. Everyone else has convinced themselves he is acting but I really don't think he is!

But he's definitely a man's comedian (more often than not) cos they like laughing at other guys (makes them feel better about themselves) and they have a more practical view of humour (they usually don't take it so personally).

I just had to explain why I don't get him.
