Ricky Gervais: Yay or Nay?

Ok then, for me Rickey Gervais was the least enjoyable part in this movie. Mind you I went off him a bit when he completely bombed at the Diana concert(Take That could so still do another song)

But I wondered how you felt, so please do tell me, for you was it a Yay or a Nay?

My vote: Nay!

NOT MY DAUGHTER, YOU BITCH!

reply

nay but then i would prob put the whole film as a nay... lol!

but i do know what you mean about gervais :S

reply

Yay. It was a small part that he was fine in and the bit where they're debating the price made a nice break between the other scenes.

Nay. He always plays his parts in the same way - just different costumes. He can't act and he's not that funny on screen.

That said, I do like him doing stand up and when he's interviewed - it's just that he's no actor, not even a comedic one. It was the same in Night at the Museum, he just wasn't funny.

reply

Nay. I agree with the above post, with the exception of The Office, he was great in that.

Absolutely.
I'll also go on to say that when he's with Merchant they work so well off of each other. Merchant always keeps Gervais from taking jokes too far and too crude. When alone Gervais goes for the shock factor and easy laughs far too much, this is especially evident when they do interviews.

Koalas are telepathic. Plus, they control the weather.

I'd give the entire movie a nay, but Ricky doesn't deserve it any more than anyone else involved in it. to be honest, I even chuckled a bit at the bargaining scene

reply

Yay. Simply because he never makes me laugh. ever. this is the only time he has ever got anything out of me.

But then, i am a fanboy of sorts.

reply

i think his humor is f-kin funny. he wasn't at the top of his game here but still funny

yay

reply

Yay!...or actually I should say Yea! I guess.

I won't try and convince you why though.
You Ricky Gervais haters seem to be quite dedicated to your cause so just let me wish you good luck with that.

reply

Yay.

I'm one of the aforementioned haters, so it's a definite Nay! from me. Having said that, the whole film failed to impress me.

Here's my problem with Gervais: I always found him irritating, untalented, unfunny, smug, and over-appreciated. I always disliked The Office, and that was fine because I could easily choose not to watch it.

Then, in an interview on TV, I saw Gervais say that he hated it when annoying British comedians went over to Hollywood and started ruining movies that would otherwise have been quite good. He swore that he'd never do that. And so despite finding him impossible to like, I had a small measure of respect for him knowing his limitations and avoiding the temptation to become a 'movie star'.

And then he went to Hollywood and started ruining good movies!

Now, whenever I see him onscreen I have an almost physiological reaction! I seriously can't stand him! He pushes all of my rage buttons and makes me want to do lots of violence.

And I'm usually so placid!

So anyway, he get's a resounding Nay! from me, and so does the whole film.

I'm torn here. I loved The Office, but everything else he's done has just been a slightly different version of David Brent. That, in itself, isn't a problem as long as you, as the viewer, know that this is what to expect.

With that in mind I'd have to go with Yay. I knew what to expect and got exactly that.

reply

" as long as you, as the viewer, know that this is what to expect."

exactly.

reply

Another thing to keep in mind is that the sign on his shop door read "Ferdy's Office". So it seems that he was chosen for the part to play a similar character to David Brent, that he was not randomly chosen and just happened to bring DB into his Ferdy.

reply

Yeah, the part wasn't in the book, so it was written for him to play as...him.

He didn't quite fit in the film. I love him as a comedian, but not in films so far...maybe his big role will pop up on the big screen soon though and impress me.

reply

Jaaaaaaaaaaaa

reply

Yay. Not so much for the character himself, but Septimus stabbing him.

reply

I would say yay,

I hadn't heard anything about this movie, man, I really enjoyed it. story was good (Gaiman) the fx were good, acting wasn't the best, I'm english and even so I'm not a great fan of british actoe, they all seem to act the same.

De Niro was excellent I thought, so funny to see him in a completely deifferent role.

Clare Danes was beautiful too.

Gervais I thought was fine, I guess I'm jusy used to seeing him on the small screen. I did laugh at loud when he got the birds voice!! However I really cringed when he through in 'you havin a laugh?' (if you've seen Extras you'll know) there was no need for that and it jarred the scene deffo.

Empire mag said this is a great film to watch on a date, I cant wait to see this with my wife.

reply

Also, never thought of it before, but it ties in with the series pretty nicely. At some point Andy Milman does appear in a film with Robert De Niro...

reply

Oh yeah! Nice one D, at the end of extras he gets a film with him, but we don't know what it is. It's obviously this one. Lol, well done Andy!!

Haha that is interesting.

My vote: Nay

The guy is exploiting himself too much. He even had an unfunny cameo in the newest GTA. Come on, nobody is funny enough to be seen nearly everywhere. Simon Pegg does a better job, you rarely see the guy untill he has a new project.

reply

Nay.
I'm sick of people talking about how brilliant and funny he is, when the truth is that his comedy is extremely limited. The Office was excellent, and he was very good in it, but every character he's played since has just been David Brent in different costumes.

I hope they still make that shampoo I like.

reply

Yay, if he went to far out of his own character he wouldnt be funny, it would be pointless.

Have you seen all his movies and Derek? He can certainly act different. By the way he is brilliant and funny....
