HALL PASS VS THE HANGOVER

Ok discuss, which one was funnier???

i liked both , it wasn't a either choice case for me.

its cliche now to say The Hangover was overrated because it became so popular and a lot of people think by going against whats popular shows they are smarter or cooler than everyone. But The Hangover was hilarious. The Hangover II on the otherhand, sucked donkey d**k mainly because it was the same movie different setting so it was a been there, done that type thing. But the 1st Hangover movie was funny. Lots of moments that make you laugh out loud. Hall Pass on the other hand doesn't.

Comparing the two is just ridiculous. And i'm not a huge Hangover fanboy, but i give a movie it's props when it deserves them and The Hangover was a funny movie.

Never liked The Hangover.
Tried to like it. Wanted to like it. But never liked it.
This had nothing to do with jumping on some band-wagon with people who think it was over-rated. Who do I need to impress on a message board?

Hall Pass was funny to me. Sophomoric...yes. Potty humor...yes. Predictable....yes. But it was funny nonetheless, especially if you know not to expect too much.

The Hangover was more entertaining by far. ...Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Hall Pass, but it's no contest.

Hall Pass, easily, IMO. Much funnier. And, yes, The Hangover is astronomically overrated

But it's a matter of opinion, apparently, comedy is subjective. Although, my opinion is superior to anybody who disagrees with me :D

reply

Yeah, this was funnier than the Hangover, mostly because of the cast.

Frankly these types of movies are getting old, as is Owen Wilson.

I loved the Hangover, but I actually think that Hall Pass was even funnier.

hall pass all the way. actual LOLs were made in viewing this as opposed to the hangover.

the hangover was just begging to be funny even though it really wasnt. over the top situations does not equate funny.

I don't want to say "overrated", but I didn't really think The Hangover was that good. It's sort of in my taste of comedy theoretically, but I don't think the humor was laugh out loud funny more than once or twice, and I didn't think the dramatic parts were all that engaging.

And the Zach Galifanikis character that everybody was raving about? Seriously, is that kind of annoying, really, really childish characters what's considered to be funny? For me he was the absolute worst and a really annoying part of the movie. He did the same character again in Due Date and there it was even worse. I think that is the kind of character that teenage-and-younger guys/boys appreciate (I'm a guy myself though it almost sounded as if I wasn't when I put it like that). What I mean is that I don't think that most adult males or females of any age find that kind of character funny.

For me it's like when the boards are raving about his character is somewhat a proof that the imdb population has gotten a lot younger since I started using the site some 13-14 years ago. Case in point, in those days films like Citizen Kane were rated higher, and now you find films like The Dark Knight and Avatar which I think are a 6-7 and a 5 respectively waaaay up on the top 250. I mean The Dark Knight was a good comic book/super hero movie, but I don't even think it was as good as Batman Begins. And Avatar I just found plain mediocre.

Avatar's storyline is a rehash of Pocahontas which is a rehash of Dances with Wolves both in terms of plot and themes. And it's so obviously for the most part taking place in a computer animated environment, it's not like it looks like that is a "real" world it's taking place in. It will absolutely not stand the test of time, I can guarantee that, in a few decades when SFX have gotten better it will look outdated as many older sci-fi and fantasy movies do today.

And TDK I think really benefited from the hype relating to the death of the actor dominating the screen. But one really great performance doesn't make a movie great. Except for the really good villain it's a standard boiler plate superhero/action movie. Not nearly as good as a Batman Begins plotwise and a lot of cool set pieces doesn't make a film great.

I do however realize that both those movies benefits greatly in the ratings that the majority of voters watched them in theatres since that's the exact kind of movies (effect heavy) that benefits from large screen and great surround sound. A fourth example of this kind is many imdb users naming The Departed the greatest movie ever made. I mean come on, it's not even in Scorcese's personal top 5. And even though I saw The Departed before I saw Infernal Affair's (which it's a remake of) I found Infernal Affairs way better and almost a masterpiece of modern cinema.

I really got off track here with my rantings about a younger crowd being most vocal about movies on the internet these days, but I really, really don't get all the credit The Hangover has gotten. I actually thought such a run-of-the-mill and lowly credited film as Hall Pass quite a lot better. I thought Hall Pass was laugh out loud funny at many occasions (almost every scene Stephen Merchant is in, he really stole the show - and Sudeikis was exceptional as one of the leads also). Hall Pass also had great music, and differing from The Hangover I found the dramatic parts very engaging and very mature for this type of comedy.

So for me it's Hall Pass, not by a landslide, but I find Hall Pass really under-appreciated for what it is and The Hangover sort of overrated for being the exact same thing, but worse and way more immature throughout. I also thought the same of Old School, the dramatic parts weren't engaging, the humor was seldom LOL-funny and it has an immature vibe throughout, both comedically and dramatically.

And someone mentioned Hot Tub Time Machine, which I found really good actually and better than Hall Pass. Really funny and really engaging plot and characters.
