Will this ever be topped

Like come on, honestly it's crazy for over a decade, no comic strip film has ever topped this one, like that's insane. Don't get me wrong, we have great comic book films that came out after this but like man what a remarkable achievement

reply

It would be hard. But you never know.

reply

I don't see how. It is spectacular in everyway.

reply

Batman Begins was better.

reply

This. and That below. Batman 89 > Batman Begins > Batman Returns > TDK >TDKR (but I liked it more than TDK. I was very upset that Two Face died so easily and didnt get more screen time. Wrong Villain died.)

reply

It already has been - Batman 89

reply

Agreed. I'm a Burtonman fan, too.

reply

For me, this is a great movie. And fantastic moviemaking. It was like a rollercoaster ride.

reply

For me? Logan. That's my (to-date) favourite comic book movie. It centered drama over action, and the most memorable moments aren't the set pieces, but the quiet stuff like Xavier and Wolverine talking in the farmhouse, or Wolvie getting ticked at X-23 for being an "X-Men fan". It's a fantastic movie that took superhero film into a fresh direction, and it busted more molds than a lot of other superhero films before it.

But, also, I prefer Burton's Batman films to Nolan's. So, I'd say it hadn't even topped Batman Returns, although I acknowledge that some of this is personal preference. Heck, there are days I think I prefer Mask of the Phantasm or the cartoon adaptations of The Dark Knight Returns to this film.

I'm also a big fan of the (criminally underrated) Dick Tracy movie, which gave us the living comic book thing long before Sin City tried it.

So, yeah, I think TDK has been topped in the comic strip film genre.

reply

Yes. It has been topped. If I made a top ten list of comic book films, this would like make the list but I would choose several films before it. If we are talking Batman films, the first Burton Batman film would rank ahead of this.

reply

"the first Burton Batman film would rank ahead of this"

Really? I loved the first Batman movie as well and at first I was confused about Michael Keaton being cast but he was awesome! Jack Nicholson's take on the Joker reminded me of the TV show version and I loved him too. But damn... The Dark Knight with Heath Ledger eclipsed them! In my own humble opinion of course 😊

What is your top ten list? If you don't mind posting it 😊

The only film I am sure of in my top ten is #1:
1. Superman the Movie (1978) - I would love to have a film top this, but I don't see it happening, this is my perfect superhero film
2. Batman (1989) - I did not immediately love this film but with each viewing I liked it more and more until it has become a favorite
3. Spider-Man (2002) - this film has aged better for me than its sequel, which I used to like more, I think Maguire was at his best (and still the best in the dual role) and I especially like Dafoe as Green Goblin, I can overlook some CGI issues here and there
4. Dredd (2012) - biggest, best surprise on this list, a great film, I have never read the comics or seen the Stallone film, but I fell in love with this Karl Urban film
5. Captain America the Winter Soldier (2014) - unlike the first film and the third, this one found a perfect balance between the superhero, the personal side of Steve Rogers and a compelling thriller

reply

6. Iron Man (2008) - for me, the biggest best star in the MCU is Robert Downey Jr and he has been the heart and soul of those films, whatever he has been paid is not enough and this is my favorite of his films
7. The Dark Knight (2008) - the film belongs to Heath Ledger, he lived up to the massive expectations and even surpassed them, his Oscar win would have happened even if he didn't die, it was completely deserved, the rest of the film is very well made, too, though I think the character of Rachel is miscast
8. Superman Returns (2006) - while there are some scenes I would have left out, there are some truly glorious moments in this film, Routh is my second favorite in the dual role, I love the new score and the tone and feel of this film are entirely consistent with the Donner films, which to me is high praise
9. Watchmen (2009) - going into this film I had no idea what to expect but in no way was I prepared for the adult mature themes and violence, but once I got over those things (took a second viewing) I really enjoyed this film, it is my favorite Snyder film
10. Wonder Woman (2017) - despite a weak ending, there is a lot to like here, especially the star-making performance by Gal Gadot, who not only looks the part but provided a sweet/lovable/tough/sexy Wonder Woman I did not expect, her chemistry with Chris Pine is very real, some excellent action sequences and fine humor
What is your top ten?

Oh wow, amazing list!! You have many of mine on yours already. Here is mine in no particular order 😊

1. The Dark Knight - Never have I cheered and applauded so much for a superhero movie. For me this movie was near perfection except for Maggie Gyllenhaal. I like her but I did not like her in this.
2. Iron Man - Ditto on everything you said about it!
3. Black Panther - I really knew nothing about this superhero but man that film blew me away! I loved every actor and actress in it. RIP Chadwick Boseman.
4. Logan - Wonderfully acted, it had it all and was a wonderful way to end an era. Daphne Keen blew me away!
5. Deadpool - Ryan Reynolds was perfection in this role and I can watch it over and over and find new things to laugh at.
6. Deadpool 2 - Same reasons as the 1st. It wasn't as good but still worthy to me :)
7. Batman (1989) - I will never forget how awesome this was. Seeing it in the theater, when he flew his batwing up in front of the moon the whole theater clapped and cheered. Michael and Jack were amazing! Not to mention Prince providing the soundtrack!
8. Shazam - This movie was fun all around, I loved the story and every single character in it.
9. Watchmen - I was shocked that this was not received well. It was different, absolutely, but I loved it and it's mature themes. Rorschach was my favorite and Jackie Earle Haley played him to perfection!
10. The Dark Knight Rises - I love the way they ended everyone's stories. I love the whole plot, the characters, the actors/actresses that portrayed them. Another near perfect movie, in my humble opinion.

Several others on your list are movies I loved as well. I will never forget the first time I saw Superman but I could not stand Margot Kidder in the role. Although I do love her in other movies. But Christopher Reeve was the best!

reply

Great list! I just wanted to pop on and say, I love that you're giving Superman Returns some love. I think that was a flawed gem, but a gem nonetheless. It contains, for me, one of the most important "This is the Real Superman" moments in the history of the character - the scene where he flies up to the stars with Lois and explains to her what she hears vs. what he hears. It's a mind-blowing moment and it reveals so much of who that hero is.

Logan is my personal all-time favourite, and I really, really enjoyed Joker. I'm curious what your thoughts are on those two films?

reply

I would have to say Logan and Deadpool came close. Logan was amazing and Deadpool was fantastic! I love how they really hit it home with the comics on that one.

reply

I'd say Logan and TDK is pretty close almost a toss up...Deadpool is a close second but for drama and serious tone the other two are better.

reply

"Deadpool is a close second but for drama and serious tone the other two are better."

Exactly how I feel! With Deadpool it was hilarious, nasty, raunchy and violent and he broke the 4th wall all the time. Which is exactly like the comics.

As for tone TDK and Logan are amazing. I cried so hard when Logan passed. After I was done crying over Charles 😥 It was the end of an era.

reply

I cried too when Charles died..he never got to have that Chalupa from Taco Bell.

reply

"he never got to have that Chalupa from Taco Bell."

Lol! Even worse!
