Massively Overrated Movie

For following reasons -

1. Bale sucked as Batman - if the titular character makes you laugh at how absurd he sounds every time he opens his mouth, you know there's something wrong

2. Maggie Gyllenhaal - simply not attractive enough to play Batman's love interest and her performance was lousy too

3. Dialogue - some of the dialogue is absolute cringe and clunky as hell. For example - "he's the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs..." Blah blah blah

4. The score is completely generic and forgettable - I like some of Hans Zimmer's past work but this was such a generic score. Was there even a theme? Could you hum it right now to save your life? Compare this to Batman 89 which had one of the most memorable and iconic themes of all time

5. Visually uninspiring - the movie has a very plain aesthetic to it, like something you'd see in an episode of CSI. There's just nothing to it. It looks like a poor man's Heat (much better movie btw)

6. Heath Ledger - his performance was probably the best thing about the movie but also massively overrated because of his death. It was good don't get me wrong, but he wouldn't have got half the praise (or the Oscar) if he was still alive. Just facts.

I find it hard to disagree with a lot of this although I wouldn't say it's factual that Ledger wouldn't have got an Oscar without his death. He had started establishing himself as a very good actor and had already got a BA nomination for Brokeback Mountain. He turned in an iconic performance in this that was very much outside his comfort zone for the roles he'd been playing previously, so would have no doubt made him one of the hottest actors around in the day. I think the clamour for him to be acknowledged for it would have been big. His performance is a major reason why this film is overrated in the first place.

I can't argue with any of that. It doesn't hold up to repeated viewings for me.

You also forgot lame attempts at humor. "Oh that's not good. Oh that's not good!" and "Let's not do that again".

Also some weird scene transitions. After Joker lets Rachel drop out of the building and Batman saves her then it just cuts to Bruce the next day in an office. Huh? Did he use some gadgets to launch himself back up to the building to confront Joker? Did Joker just leave without killing anyone? I don't think Nolan knows.

100% right.

It's a popular film with people who have generic taste in movies. They are easily impressed and can't gauge a melodramatic script and characters, just give them some stylized action and their minds are blown.

Film fans with a bit more imagination will see right through its pretentiousness.
