You should check out The Innocents (late 50's early 60's). Based on The Turning of The Screw. It's the ghost story that a lot of old house/ creepy children stories come from.

Don't bother with Mama- it not great. Exec produced by Del Torrro but a lot of the visual style and motifs seem very cliched and worn by now.

The Woman in Black -Radcliffe isn't a great actor but if you don't know the story it's worth a look.

Also a movie called The Daisy Chain (2007???).

The Wicker Man ( original 1970's) has a similar tone - unsettling rather than creepy.

If you prefer ghost stories rather than slasher/gore movies these are well worth seeing.

Some excellent reccommendations, in addition to what's been mentioned you might want to have a look at "Fragile" with Calista Flockhart as well. Not nearly as good but similar in tone.

I thought of "The Changeling" right away too (The 1980 movie with George C Scott that is). "The Others" I also agree with. For some reason I also thought of the movie "Don't Look Now".

I second "The Awakening" even I think its much better.

This film has some major similarities (even some near identical images) to the earlier French film Saint Ange. The premises of the films are similar but Saint Ange is far more subtle and strange than The Orphanage. The Orphanage has more outright scares and tension though.

The Haunting [1963], directed by Robert Wise, starring Julie Harris and Claire Bloom. Freaking scary, watched it with my Dad, as a kid. Then every time it came on TV again, I would make my friends, or siblings watch with me. We bought a new house in '67, were sitting in our new family room {with no curtains yet} and my Dad sneaked up to the windows and yelled "Boo!" Needless to say, seven of us screamed and scattered and then we piled in one bedroom on the floor together to sleep! I don't find it as scary anymore, I've watched it so many times, {like 'Rear Window', my fave}, but it is still a disturbing and very good film.

The Others is the obvious one that comes to mind. Julia's Eyes (Los ojos de Julia) is another Del Toro produced horror starring Belén Rueda and many of the Del Toro films such as Pan's Labyrinth, The Devil's Backbone and the more recent Don't Be Afraid of the Dark have a similar style and themes.

Also it's worth mentioning that most J-horror in the early 2000s explore themes of ghosts, guilt, children/mothers, grief and repressed memories whilst employing the same shock tactics as used in this film.
