To those who say there's no story

There seems to be this meme that Tarsem is all visuals and no story. It's been applied to The Fall by some critics, on this message board, and recently by Stephen Dorff and TheWrap.com. While this accusation may have been true with the Cell, it's certainly not the case with The Fall.

I think there is a gap between expectations and reality. Many people hear about the visuals of The Fall or see the trailer, and even hear Roy call the fairy tale an "epic", and that's what they expect. An epic.

But this is an intimate character drama. The heart of the story is about deep pain, cruelty, love, innocence, redemption. There are so many rich details embedded throughout the film it really rewards multiple viewings.

Don't fall prey to lazy thinking and preconceived expectations. This movie has a terrific story.

It's unbelievable, when people can't look beyond the surface and see it's not just a fantasy movie at all. Most of these beyond the surface movies(unlike LOTR or The Marix for instances) can be "got" in a single viewing if they really open up and start thinking and feeling during the movie.

I guess some of these people are the ones who claim Signs is just another Alien movie. I'm not sure when the audience will live up to the level of the director's intentions and stop being shallow. Both are great under-valued movies imo, and this is mostly attributed to many people not really getting them. Or is not wanting to get them?

Firstly, it's about a child who has had trauma all her life and only recently has she lost her father. it's not just about the story that Roy tells her(although it is also about that story and how that story is linked with their lives emotionally), it's more about how the story brings her closer to Roy emotionally, making her think he could be her dad. Secondly, it's about a man who uses the innocence of a child for his own intentions, and later on understands the love she has for him and lets her influence the major decision in his life, his life itself.

I'm surprised that people who claim to love film say this has no story. It's as if they don't understand the medium of film at all. They perhaps would prefer a wordy theater play?

The strength of film has always been visual: the way the shots are composed, the editing, the framing, the light, the camera movement. To not be able to grasp the nuances of story that are being told in this film using the techniques above is surely to admit you really don't love film at all but rather you prefer narrative as told through dialogue. I'd advise those people to watch any one of the many excellent plays that are around. But you they truly love film, then you should learn to appreciate what can be done just purely through film.

So, you are truly saying that The Cell is all visuals and no plot, but The Fall "has a terrific story"?
You are really claiming that The Fall is so deep, and its story so rich, it requires multiple viewings?
Hahaha. The fact that you are actually serious makes it even funnier.
Who would watch this pointless borefest multiple times? Only someone who puts style over substance.

Boycott movies that involve real animal violence! (and their directors too)

Anyone who has ever experienced true despair would connect with this story. If that's not you, that's fine, but this is one of the best films about suicide I've ever seen.

I personally prefer substance to style every time, but can appreciate the visuals as they augment the story. To date this is the only Tarsem film I've really enjoyed, because of the story.

The fact that you gave 10s to Sucker Punch, Death Proof, Dragonheart, and 28 Weeks Later, while giving 6s to The English Patient and Shakespeare in Love, 5s to The New World and Casablanca, and a 4 to Children of Men suggests that you're always going to find deeper cinema boring, simply because you have a limited attention span. I hope as you grow up you can keep a more open mind.

I agree 100%

Another film that has even less dialogue The Fall is To The Wonder ,however it's incredibly deep.

Stories can be told with allot of dialogue ,with less or even no dialogue and still be deeply moving.

lol "deep". God, I hate hipsters.

Stick to Mad Max; you'll be happier.

Stephen Dorff says no story? Seriously, Stephen Dorff?! His best received film in recent years was Somewhere, the film in which Sofia Coppola set up a camera and said "just do something for ten minutes here, then we move to another location and do the same."

I couldn't agree more. Spot on.

To give an example of a beautiful film that had no story, see The Tree of Life. Sean Penn even said there were moments when I didn't know what he was supposed to do.

I just read a bunch of replies, and I really don't know what more I can add other than this: a film that brings tears to my eyes is, to me, as far from boring as you can get. This film has done that for me more than once.

You see no story because you are digging too deep.
It's about two depressed patients. One is telling a story that he just makes up on the fly and we see the visuals of their fantasies combined. And that is really all there is to it.

Hipsters can use their fantasy to see hidden meanings so they can picture the clothing on an emperor that walks around bare naked. And they will say that this movie is epic and anyone who doesn't agree must be stupid.

And that is really all there is to it.
