over rated?

Any one else think this is over rated, people always telling me oh you must see Pan's Labyrinth, its got high rate on here and rotten.

There was just nothing in it, a *beep* father and a kid, woop de do

underrated

reply

Agreed. And it's in fking spanish. Seriously?

reply

No

reply

Nope, it's pretty good, of course you'd need to know something about Spanish history anout Franco and his cruel regime.

Then you could understand who the real monster was among a story about fantasy and real tough life.

He even wasn't her real father, but her stepfather, so we can see that you didn't understand anything.

That's actually one of the many problems of this movie. It paints Team Franco as wholly evil, and the rebels as the totally good guys akin to Star Wars. However, that's not like how it was at all. These rebels were in actuality Stalin youths that supported the same type of totalitarian regime we saw in Soviet and we see to this day in places like China, Cuba and at the moment, Venezuela. This movie paints them in a way that was so incredibly withdrawn from reality it's a focking joke.

Now granted, Franco's regime was evil too, but these "rebels" were equally as bad.

No, if you understand a revolution and learn something about countries ruled by dictators, people doesn't fight to put another one in charge, they fight to get rid off the dictator. Franco was as evil as Castro, as Stalin, as any other guy who tried to rule everybody's life.

People under a cruel regime would support anyone who is against the opressor.

We cannot leave behind the fact that a guy who shoots at a girl with a baby can't be any good. So, he was the villain, it wouldn't mather what side he would support.

Sure, the movie might be a bit overrated, but i'ts still one of the most visually creative films ever made.IMO Pan's Labyrinth is a Must watch.

reply

I'd argue that "Hausu" is the most visually creative film made.

America isnt ready for a gay mexican chicken sandwich - Poultrygeist

I liked it, I didn't love it and would give it a 6.5 score. Based on reviews calling it "A Masterpiece" and "Brilliant" I agree that Pan's Labyrinth is overrated.
I disagree with the original poster who said "There was just nothing in it, a *beep* father and a kid, woop de do". I'm pretty sure he was just trying to get people all riled up.

Vastly overrated....
1. The screenplay was weak. Whereas the 'real life' scenes were reasonably well-written and powerful, the fantasy scenes were all over the shop. The toad sequence was great and established our heroine as a strong, determined, gutsy little miss who was shaping up to be an admirable character. Then, in the Pale Man sequence, this same gutsy little gal becomes all timid and stupid (she knew she had limited time, but fiddled around anyway...she knew she wasn't supposed to eat, but decided to anyway - and grapes? That's what a kid is tempted by? Grapes????) and makes a mess of what should have been a very easy mission.
2. The heroine was a fairly boring little actress...she had practically no facial expressions at all.
3. The faun, a pivotal character in the plot, was reduced to a cartoon character by virtue of the mask/make-up which obliterated his face. We weren't able to determine if he was a Good Guy or a Bad Guy, which we might have had a stab at had he been able to use his face. This was a lost opportunity...the faun could have been a great character who kept us guessing until the end.
4. I found I wasn't able to invest in any of the characters. I simply didn't care what happened to any of them...with the possible exception of the doctor. Poor writing and poor casting/acting.
5. Completely unoriginal. When it wasn't being "Alice in Wonderland", it was being "Chronicles of Narnia". Whilst the horror of the real life scenes was well done, there wasn't enough of the fantasy to balance it. Once again...weak writing. Had the screenplay been based on a novel, this probably wouldn't have been the case.

1. I don't really like this movie

2. No, it's not "overrated"

I don't get why people call sth "overrated" just because they don't like it and many others do. It certainly deserves its rating, otherwise it would have been rated lower. That's just how ratings work.

[I didn't like it because I found the girl profoundly unrelatable. Her decisions made me really mad.]

Some movies tend to polarize more than others. So, the difference of opinion is higher than usual. Nevertheless, a movie can't be over- or underrated (well... provided, everyone rates honestly and the "I-rate-either-1-or-10"-users are burnt alive).

Movie was interesting watch but it is far from being masterpiece of any sort.

Character developement felt as if you were watching a movie targeted at kids while storyline was clearly over-goryfied and aimed at adults.

I sometimes feel that it is enough to shock people a bit and they will call whatever they are watching a masterpiece..
