Age and morality: What would you have done? (NOT a discussion topic)

As Morgan Freeman says to Casey in the movie:

"You walk away from it, you may not regret it when you get home. You may not regret it for a year, but when you get to where I am, I promise you, you will."

I'm curious to see if there IS, in fact, a correlation between age and agreeing/disagreeing with Casey.

So, the point of this topic is simply to state your age and to state whether you agree or disagree with the following statement (again, this is NOT a discussion topic):

"Casey Affleck was right in returning the child to her biological mother."

(Disagreeing means you think he should have left the child with Morgan Freeman; no other options are considered).

Anyway:

Interesting topic and results. Would love to see an updated accounting.

Do I agree with the way they went about this abduction? No. Go through proper channels, even though it may be ugly and not work. The abduction just as easily could have failed that child as sending her back.

BUT, Casey never had the opportunity to stop the abduction. This is not part of his choice. His choice comes later when he must decide between turning in Morgan and returning the girl to her mother, or walking away, leaving her where she is and never saying anything to anyone...I have to say the right thing to do was to walk away and leave her where she is, where at that point in time, she has the best chance.

47/F/DISAGREE strongly.

It was Patrick's responsibility to turn Doyle in. The girl is basically a hostage to Doyle, and at least deserves to know who her mother is. She would never be able to live a normal childhood life with Doyle. She couldn't go to grade school, couldn't make friends, couldn't leave their farmhouse for many years. And how do you know Doyle is as noble as he seems? He's already killed people to kidnap this child. He could be a pedophile for all you know.

And the mother is going to live the rest of her life never knowing what happened to her daughter, thinking she's dead or missing. Patrick has the ability to watch over the daughter now, and maybe even adopt her. Call in social Services if the mom doesn't improve her ways. Patrick made the morally right decision.

As the thread is still alive and there might be a new count, I'll join in:

42 - disagree.

I don't know if I would have the courage to leave the child there, but I don't think Patrick did her any favours by returning her to her mother. And I think sitting there on the couch with her, he started to realize that.
The only way that could make his decision right would be him taking responsibility for the girl, as the mother clearly won't, and at least there's a sliver of hope for that.

Generally speaking it is ofcourse against law to take law in your hands like that, so I can't really justify such act in legal terms, but in this particular case any sensible person with common sense would have seen the sad outcome if the girl was returned to her junkie mother. Patrick character had a rare humane chance to save a child from certain harm, but he didn't.

Ofcourse this girl should have been taken away from her mother by child services, but as we know from the ending, the system did not work in her favour.
