Will Craig regret leaving?

I know he's tired of doing the show and he's already made a lot of money to live off of for a while, but I'm worried that Craig's career will die after he leaves the show. He'll still have his stand-up career and he might do some other projects, but his popularity will fade after a couple years and will never be the same. Imagine what would've happened to Letterman if he decided to stop doing his Late Night show after 10 years. He would've just been remembered now as a guy who had a funny show in the 80s and would not be thought of as a TV legend.

I doubt it. He's got his own production company, he does lots of voicework, he's got steady stand-up gigs, he's a published author, and now he's hosting a game show. It doesn't seem like he's got much to worry about in the career department. People with intelligence, work ethic, and personality like Craig's generally don't go hungry.

I'm hoping he'll do some writing. I love the way he writes, and I'm hoping for some more books from him. This will, hopefully, give him the time to do that.

Of course, there are lots of rumors of new shows, so he may be kept pretty busy. And, he'll get a chance to do some more acting...((fingers crossed)).

I'm with you, deb. I'd hate to have him sitting around, resting on his laurels. (is that a sex thing?)

Seriously, I hope to see him in some movies, or such.

Or, who knows, maybe we'll see him on "Dancing With The Stars"...

Funnily enough, I had the same thought the other day WCO and don't know why I hadn't until now.

I do think like everyone has said, he's got enough fingers in enough pies to keep him very busy.

I just wonder whether the nightly exposure will be missed.

I guess it depends where he's at. It might be that the new found time he gets is chewed up with more family stuff and if he's really past the stage of caring about the show he won't miss it for a second.

Maybe it wouldn't be a surprise to see him make a Leno style comeback after a couple of years.

I'm sure he could get his old job back. Corden won't last a year unless I'm very very wrong.

reply

I really like Craig, but I don't rate his stand-up ability at all. I really don't think that will ever amount to much.

As for leaving the show, I actually think he should have left the show around 2010/11 - since then he hasn't been the same and has visibly lost his mojo from the earlier years. In my opinion, the last few years have already taken the shine off his previous top form.

Seriously, between 05-10 he was wiping the floor with every other late show. It was embarrassing how superior he was.

Ideally he needs a break from weekly TV, perhaps do some writing? He's a good writer, very quick-witted. But I do fear he has already burnt himself out somewhat these last few years. I'm not sure what he's got left in the tank.

reply

I think since he originally wanted to leave, before they gave him the new studio, he has just been phoning it in. He seems to be just coasting until the end and not creating anything new since the end is close.

reply

I don't see him returning to television talk, but maybe going the podcast route where he can do exactly what he wants to do, uncensored. He seems to be friends with Chris Hardwick who could lure him to a weekly podcast on the Nerdist podcast network.

reply

Again, he's not retiring so he'll be fine. just moving on in his career. depending on what he does, sure we might not see him everyday.

and Letterman is hardly a legend IMO. in fact no where near. Since when did longevity automatically grant legend status.

reply

Pretty much anyone who has been on American television for more than 30 years is considered a TV legend. There's a reason why those people are on television for so long.

reply

What about Celebrity Name Game ? I think that's still on?

reply

I'm sure he'll regret it at some point, even if its just a little.

Hes obviously burnt out on doing the show for so long. He has to juggle his family life and other gigs (movies, stand-up, etc.) all while being bound to hosting the show, which can't be easy. But its job security and has kept his name out there.

I wouldn't be surprised if he has his own podcast or something in a couple years.

Given his interest in Kierkegaard, I'm sure he will regret leaving. Just as much as he'd regret staying.

“I see it all perfectly; there are two possible situations — one can either do this or that. My honest opinion and my friendly advice is this: do it or do not do it — you will regret both.”
― Søren Kierkegaard, Either/Or: A Fragment of Life

Whether or not his "popularity" fades after a couple years... So long as he's happy and doing what he wants to do, who cares what the popular opinion is. It's never been a consideration for him before, why start now?

reply

Craig's stuck in the "aesthetic" state of existence, a state of being Kierkegaard regarded with contempt...

I got news for em. Theres gonna be hell to pay. Cause I aint Daddys little boy no more

reply

I don't think Craig will regret leaving one bit. He may miss it at times and being busy, but ultimately he's made his money and had success, he wants to bow out of the late show business now. I heard he got a fat hunk of cash for being passed up on David Letterman's job, I heard something like $8 million dollars. I think he is settled for life.

He also gets voice work in some big films like "How to train your dragon". He also makes some cameos on stuff like "Hot in Cleveland". Some people think when someone leaves the Hollywood scene their career is over. That is far from the truth. People still have a life just not on camera anymore.

reply

Can he regret leaving?......I thought he was fired? I know they rejected him for Late Night....citing his age and him being a "niche" performer. CBS hasn't been too kind to him this past year. I'll miss Geoff and the horse!

reply

Dang, I've missed something. Last I'd seen on this board any references that were made to Craig's leaving due to not being promoted to taking over Letterman 's show were met with derision and adamant denial that there was any connection whatsoever.

You didn't miss anything. There is no connection.

reply

You thought wrong. Craig wasn't fired -- it was his own decision to leave (made well before Dave's announcement). And you can't reject someone for a job they didn't even want.

reply

he was NOT fired, he quit. He's tired of the same crap. He didn't want Letterman's job
