Michelle Gomez

So the idea of a female Doctor isn't necessarily a horrible idea, just the nonsense they made of it was. I wish they hadn't used Michelle Gomez as Missy because honestly, she is a rare female actor that has that mad energy that could have worked as The Doctor. She kind of in that rare zone of a Tilda Swinton where they just have a weird but fitting presence. Anyone else think she'd have made an amazing Doctor?

reply

Not sure as I just see her as missy but the key thing is she has screen presence and I don't feel Jodie has often.

I think it doesn't help that they made jodie's doctor often be in the background. While the doctor sometimes is part of a group they are always the main one at the front, the one making the tough decisions.

While I'm not keen on the whole timeless child arc the Ruth doctor was great when she became the doctor because she showed a manipulative side and had attitude

I think Jodie just don't have the gravitas for it sometimes. She plays eccentric and kind well, but when she is arguing against a big main villain I don't feel it. Previous New Who Doctors all had ways of making you scared for the villain somehow. Like you believed they had the ability to do something about it. With Jodie, I just don't.

Sometime in their little group, it felt like Graham was as much the leader as Jodie. That was a problem.

Matt Smith, for example, was quite young when he took the role. But his age never seemed an issue. You believed he was a wise old man, and when he got angry you believed that he was the most dangerous person in the room. With Jodie, I don't feel that.

I agree about Matt Smith. I was a bit dubious about him at first, but as soon as I saw him in the part he really was the Doctor. JW never has been for me, Jo Martin was though. Shame they didn't cast her instead of JW!

I'm still hoping for Kris Marshall, but if it's going to be another woman then, as someone else says, it should be someone with more gravitas or presence, Rebecca Front maybe? Tilda Swinton would also be good.

reply

Oh yeah I agree - I think it is probably a mix of bad writing and bad acting, or even simply being miscast. I've only ever seen her in one other thing and that was a Black Mirror episode and she was good from what I remember. I did watch a video today of the cast doing a competition thing and she seemed to show more attitude.

I kind of think the next doctor will be female, otherwise those who have been against it will feel they where right. I mean the chance of 14 being the Ruth fugitive doctor is very slim now due to RTD taking over, but if that happened I'd be very happy and excited. As soon as she became the doctor she became the doctor and just had so much screen presence and importantly attitude. I've mentioned it before on here, but the scene where she tells that other timelord not to use the gun, knowing it has been rigged, just made me think of the 7th doctor and the hand of omega in Remembrance. I'd love to see the next doctor a bit more manipulative like that.

Nah, she was perfectly cast as the first female Master. After Matt Smith she was the best thing about the Moffat era.

reply

Tilda Swinton would have been good, too!

reply

She does have a kind of strange aurora but in a good way, similar to let's say Bowie

reply

Bowie will always be the Doctor we all wish we'd gotten.

reply

I guess they could still user her.

And yeah, she has the right presence and charisma ... I like her even in Doom Patrol ...

reply

Watching her in Doom Patrol, especially the more eccentric way she is when she first arrived at the mansion, was what got me thinking about it. She's fascinating to watch and has a really strong presence. She can be in a scene with decently heavy hitters and still steal the scenes.
