Maybe they made her look unglamorous in this movie, since women in the community have no reason to try to be attractive, since family units are just set up instead of born out of love.
Also, does she really look old these days? Or did they make her look older to make it believable that she has an 18 year old son?
I'm surprised she was willing to take a role like this at age 35. Once she does, it could be difficult to go back, and actresses usually wait until after the age of 40 to play mothers of teenagers.

I think it's perhaps just her terrible acting or rather the choices she made that contributed to her appearance. Her mood was foul as Mother while father was pleasantly monotone...if that even makes sense.
