Six point Five??

Are you kidding me??

This movie had great characters who were played by amazing actors, a fantastic script, a great and very gripping storyline, incredible psychological depth, and a very thrilling, edge-of-your-seat ending in the house.

Seriously, the whole house chase was fantastic. Everything leading up to that was brilliant and it felt like all the pent up emotions and whatnot finally got released.

The whole movie was fantastic, I'm really surprised I'd never seen it before just now.
I heard it was good but like so many other movies I just never got around to watching it until now.

Seriously though, what about this movie makes people think its only 6.5? Different people have different tastes of course, but I would think this would appeal to a lot of people. People who just want intensity and action? It's got plenty so you're good. People who want deep characters and great psychology? It's got plenty of that as well, so you're good.

I feel like I'm rambling now, so yeah. Why such a low rating?

reply

I agree... I personally gave it a high 8... rounded to a 9 for the ultimate vote. Great, entertaining movie!

reply

I gave it 2.5
It was ridiculously bad and so unrealistic.

reply

yeah..i was surprised with the rating too, i just finished watching the movie and it was an hour and a half full of tension!..it should be more than 6.5!

reply

As you say - different people have different tastes. I personally didn´t like this movie much and think that the rating is too high for this mediocre movie. There are things I liked about it like the main characters performances, but overall I´m not in love with this.

reply

Totally agree with OP, it confounds me that this isn't more lauded.

i just started watching it again and remembered a lot of the movie. it stuck with me as a really good movie so i was dumbfounded it was rated higher even after all these years. first thing i noticed was MY GOD.Cillian Muprhy was so HOT in this picture. first few minutes of his scenes i'm like "holy *beep* this guy is so smoldering. i LOVED his eyes...would love to see them in person. plus i think he was a great actor in this part. i remembered making sure i found how who he was at the end of this movie when i saw it first. definitely a well thought out and interesting movie. i might even go a 8.5 on this one after i finish watching it again.

Yep, that's usually the answer to a "why the low rating" question.

reply

I gave it a 5/10.

Murphy, McAdams and Cox are great actors that did a great job. But the storyline was very weak at best.

- A packed plane and nobody overhears their conversation? I don't mean it's impossible for it to happen, but it's too much of a risk to take for a "professional" hit.

- When you have a missile launcher you could've killed your target no matter what room you put him in. There weren't any other buildings in the way, so from the boat they had a clear shot to all that side of the building. If his "usual" room was facing the other way they could've shot him from another building. Or you shoot the car when he arrives, or leaves, etc. There's a thousand methods to kill them that don't require the involvement and hijacking of other people.

- Their escape from the plane seems impossible. They are sitting at the tail and she reaches the door as soon as it opens? And he is right behind her after being stabbed with a pen?

- A front desk staff helping herself to a coffee from front of house at a 5 star Hotel? No way, that's instant dismissal.

- She crashes a jeep into her Dad's front door and for 20 minutes there aren't any cops, ambulances or neighbours? Not to mention how it was impossible for her to make a call before getting there... even though she new an assassin was probably going to try and kill her father. Wouldn't you make sure the cops know about it?

Too many plotholes for anything more than 5/10.

I think most of these can be explained away.

1. In an airplane, I barely focus on other people's conversations. Sure, I hear the occasional line, but mostly I just go about with my business. I assume this would be the same for others.

2. I believe aiming the missile launcher at the room from a boat was part of the villain's "plan". Sure, they could have done it other ways, but they just chose to do it that way. Besides, in another building, they are more likely to be noticed carrying the missile launcher than out at the beach.

3. She is running through the plane to get to the door, so this was also believable.

4. Eh...doesn't have much to do with the plot.

5. It's the middle of the day and there were likely no nearby neighbors to call the police if she couldn't. Besides, she was too busy running away from him to find a phone to call her dad.

Just my opinion.

reply

You did an alright job defending the movie except for point 5.

It's the middle of the day and she crashes her jeep into a building. Way too much of a stretch for neighbours and passers by to not call the cops as soon as possible. It was stretched out just so they can have the silly house chase scene. The house chase scene in itself is ridiculous. Why would Cillian Murphy's character decide to take his job so personally? He didn't have to 'finish the job'.

i came into this thread expecting the OP to be saying that it should be lower

this was a VERY average movie, 5.5/10 for me.

reply

lol, me too! I gave this movie a 5 just because it had Rachel and Cillian in it, but seriously what a waste of such amazingly talented actors. If I judged only writing and execution of this film, I'd give it a 2...

reply

8/10 is what my take...fantastic entertainer...Cillian Murphy and Rachael were looking so good together...seriously its very underrated.

2ND-BAD ENGLISH :D

5/10 from me. Writing was substandard and they used too many hackneyed phrases. Whole movie rested on 2 characters shoulders. As much as Cilian Murphy is a villian and pretty gal Rachel is a heroine, the casting was also cliche and predictable. The peripheral action was simplistic wrapped around what could have been a good plot. The annoying hotel guests didn't add anything but futility to the show. The even more annoying hotel clerk who couldn't "spell her own name" she was so nervous the entire show.

reply

I thought it was great. I'd give it a 7 or 8 out of 10.
