mortonbeck, interesting concept. Good analysis of the "Man as God" movies as well. I am familiar with the "Oh, God!" franchise and it followed a similar path as the Bruce/Evan movies so far in as far as the first one was a relative success, then the second was a bit disappointing. Of the "Oh, God!" franchise, the third one, "Oh God, You Devil!" is my favorite.
Much of the storyline you propose, however, I can't see happening. In "Oh God, You Devil!" George Burns played a dual role as both God and Satan, fighting over one man's soul. Given the above pattern, perhaps a similar storyline where Morgan Freeman as both God and Satan fighting over Grace's (Jennifer Anniston) soul? Not that I think it's likely that Jen would want to reprise her role, but someone who resembled her enough to make it plausible. Why did I choose Grace? Back in the original franchise, OGYD chose a male singer/songwriter. In this version to "keep up" with "gender equality," it would need to be a woman. Another reason I chose Grace is that in "Bruce Almighty," even in her most troubled time, her faith was secure (as she prayed for Bruce, which helped convince him). I think it would be the most obvious choice to challenge such strong faith.
Another possibility is that Grace may expect a child sometime in the movie (with or without Bruce), and this child is what restores her faith. Would she name the child "Chris," perhaps? Or will she choose "Luke," short for Lucifer?
Let's just hope the writers can pull together a good story this time. One thing a lot of the people posting here may not be aware or have forgotten, (it's in the trivia section) that a lot of the story had to be changed when Jim Carrey did not reprise his role as Bruce. This caused several problems, and rewriting an entire screenplay couldn't have been an easy task. As a result, some details (and plot holes) may have been overlooked. Additionally, if Morgan Freeman chooses not to reprise his role, the project should be either postponed or scrapped. In my opinion, he was perfect in the role.
Let's hope that if a third installment is produced that some of the problems encountered during the production of "Evan Almighty" are taken care of more efficiently.
