So this question does not exclusively pertain to this particular film, but to all films showing female frontal nudity in general.

Why do the female actresses who appear nude on camera always have bush? In this film, the girl who appears nude has some bush going on. I feel the general trend for the young women of today is to shave or at least trim their nether-regions. But I have never seen a shaved girl in a non-porn film. I understand that for nudity involving older women/older times a bush would be accurate. But I have never been with a girl during these times that sported a full-on vag beard. Why is this? Is it becasue showing a shaved vag would be to risque? In other words, is the hair necessary becasue showing the actual labia in a mainstream movie would be considered too porn-esque? Anyone have any insight into this?

Yeah, the above poster is correct. Though it's funny that full frontal male nudity doesnt exactly garner such a rating. Its discrimination. The MPAA are a bunch of dicks... haha, puns are funny.

If you really want to see some full frontal female nudity, go watch Spun, the unrated cut, not the R rated version. Plenty of nice pretty SHAVED vagina.

I think part of why the nudity was "controversial" was because the character was only supposed to be 15 or so? That would be my guess. It didn't really strike me as odd that she had bush. That's how they look naturally...maybe she hadn't been introduced to the Brazilian version.

Actually, that's not true. In fact, the reason this film was rated R for "graphic nudity" is that her labia are rather clearly visible in the scene. (I'm a straight guy, so trust me on this one. )

Genitalia of either gender can be shown in an R rated film as long as it is "non-sexual" nudity. In this scene, she just walks into the room while talking on the phone, so that's considered "non-sexual".

Showing any "lippage" results in a higher chance of achieving an NC-17 rating, so many actresses use MERKINS (a pube toupee) to cover up.....

If I remember correctly, in Season 3 of Weeds when Uncle Andy is catering the porn video with Lexington Steele one of the first porn stars that he first talks to has no bush. The funny thing is that this season is rated PG in Canada.

I just saw that movie Fools Gold and I was wondering if the actress who played Gemma in that movie has been in others nude and sure enough, she was and it was this one.. cool.. I am wondering if there are any others and if she is doing any thing other then walking into a room naked answering her phone

Yes, merkins really do exist - prostitutes in France in the 18th or 19th century first used them to cover up their canker sores and oozing puss from whatever venereal diseases they may have had - NASTY!

I was surprised as well.

Younger women today shave almost exclusively.

I figured with the prudishness of the ratings board she would have at least had it pretty well trimmed. Bet she does in real life.

I've always wondered how and why that caught on so heavily; shaving that is.

I remember the first time I saw a stripper shaved was in 1977. It was a porn star, Rene Bond. And back them women hardly even trimmed. From that moment on I was hooked and all of my girlfriends went along with it. When I got married, same thing.

Someone said it was because porn stars did it, but I remember a time when they were actually worried that shaving might get them in trouble with the law (really)

But I did find out that the first class of woman (so to speak) who shaved were runway models. Job requirement for most of them.

Well whatever the reason I"m glad it is now the way it is.

I agree with andynuke. I think the actress, Alexis D., who played Lolita is hotter and sexier with the bush between her legs. For me, that was nice nostalgia dating back to the full-frontal scenes from such 80's classics as Porky's, Risky Business and Revenge of the Nerds. For me, that is very rare to see full female frontal nudity with a bikini shaped tuft of hair covering female genitalia in a 21st Century R-rated/or adult themed film. Seeing Lolita strut into the living room to pick up her cell phone while completely naked makes me want to buy this DVD solely for that reason. Since I'm part "old school", I prefer it unshaved. I hope before this decade ends or sometime in the next five years, the full-on vag beard will make a comeback.

What I find interesting about this thread is the ignorance of female genital terminology. The labia are located in the vulva, but what we saw covered in hair on the actress is the mons pubis, or the pubic mound. She may have had hair on her mons, but it's quite possible her vulva was waxed or shaved. You really wouldn't have seen unless she spread her legs in front of the camera, and she definitely did not. We saw her from a bit of a distance, with a line of hair left on her mons - looked to me like she had shaved it on both sides actually.

The vagina is internal, and seldom seen outside of an extreme vulva closeup, and then the opening only, or gyn. exam. Her labia were not visible at all in the film.

I hope these are all men providing the comments here - I'd hate to think there are any women who don't know their own bodies. ;)

Actually for the most part, you're wrong.

The OP was very specifically stating that the pubic hair seemed to be used to cover up the labia. And if there is no hair, the labia majora is very easy to see.

Also, "The labia are located in the vulva" is not correct at all. "Vulva" is the all encompassing term for all the differnt parts, including the labias. The labia majora is not "in the vulva" the labia majora actually is the first and foremost thing you see of the vulva, and often with many women, the labia minora is also clearly visible (sometimes even moreso which has given rise to cosmetic labia minora operations to trim back the "beef curtains").

I reviewed some documents, and I can confirm, as someone else already stated correctly, you can see her labia majora.

She does have hair, but it doesn't seem to be purely wild, as it exudes more of the "racing stripe" design with trimming.

A message to most of you posters:
Women have hair. Get used to it. The fad of shaving has come and gone down the centuries (some quick research on the history of harems will convince you of this), but women without sex on the brain have tended to restrict their preening for men to the parts of the body that are liable to be seen when they are clothed, at least until they pair up with a guy and start negotiating on the subject.
The original question is valid, though, and some posters seem able to comment on the implications of baldness for ratings..

I second the above post, although I can't compete on all the detail given.

If anyone wants to plough through the 'The Nudity scene' thread, there are a couple of url addresses provided on page 4 of the thread which give still pix of the scene and reveal that LIPS WERE SHOWN (horror!). Just thought I'd mention it. It's not something that imprints itself on the mind of most viewers.
Btw, this reminds me of one of my all-time favourite poems, by X.J. Kennedy, entitled 'Nude Descending a Staircase':

Toe after toe, a snowing flesh,
a gold of lemon, root and rind,
she sifts in sunlight down the stairs
with nothing on, nor on her mind.
We spy beneath the bannisters
the silent thresh of thigh on thigh.

Anyway, to get back to movies, if a director thinks that a woman's decision to shave says something specific about her character then s/he should be incorporating this into the casting of the actress for the part. Prospective agents should be told 'The actress is going to have to be shaven, so let her know before she gets hot about the role'. Who knows, maybe these things are important to an actress.

There have been a lot of women in movies that went * that has had very well groomed/shaved. A couple of examples right off the top of my head:
In the movie Road Trip there is a girl walking around in the locker room who’s very well groomed.
Deborah Kara Unger in the couple of movies she’s gone full frontal is well groomed.
Toni Collete in 8 ½ Women was totally bald. Interesting to note she has also sported some big bush in other roles. So she seems to “groom” for the role.
Michelle Borsch (could have her name wrong) from the show Tell Me You Love Me had the thinnest of strips and totally bald lips and she showed those in some extensive scenes.
Elizabeth Berkley in Showgirls was almost totally bald.
Obviously, the number of woman we could run off who sport a fuller bush in movies would be a much longer list.
None of these movies were NC-17 in their theatrical release despite the “hairless” woman. The reason most of the women in movies have bushes is because the actresses themselves have bushes. They aren’t porn stars or strippers who shave there nether regions for men’s porn obsessed benefit. I’m surprised to hear so many of you claim to only have hooked up with girls who were bald down there. Makes me wonder how many women you’ve actually hooked up with or the types in which you hook up with. In my experience I’ve encountered all kinds: some who were totally bald, some who were trimmed, and some who had full bush. I’d say the least common is the totally bald, followed by the total full bush, then the extremely well groomed (landing strip or bald lips with a patch on the mons pubis) and last but certainly not least the most common the moderately trimmed woman.

The OP says most women are shaved or trimmed. And your response is they're all sluts. So does that mean women can't groom at all? If they can, how much grooming is too much?

Say she's going to the beach and goes in to get her bikini line tidied up a little. The waxer applies the strips.

What makes you think this? If a merkin is ever used nowadays in movies, it's for comdeic purposes. To me it sounds like you are simply disappointed that actresses don't shave it bald like porn stars.

Monica Belluci does not wear a merkin! She's done pictorials in which she's been fully nude or worn things that were see through, and she sported the full thick italian bush she was born with.
