Bits you Didn't Like (All Series)

I love Peep Show - but there's always going to be something we wish wasn't there. For me it's the animal bits. I never find animal death's funny - but for some reason every comedy I know and love seems to find it appropriate to 'off' some animal in a vile way. I never watch the pheasant thing with Mark - but I get the gist. Hate that Peep Show did this. And though I find the Mummy incident less offensive (it was an accident...to begin with), I still wish comedies would avoid this area. I just find it a bit ...wrong.

So what bits of Peep Show do you dislike?

The 'Mummy' incident went a bit too far to be credible, in my opinion. I don't think even Jez would knowingly eat bits of roasted dog.

Although I thought Mark pulling the head off the pheasant was hilarious.

I wasn't too convinced by Mark weeing into the food in the Mexican restaurant, it felt too much like they were recycling the weeing-in-the-drawer incident from the first series without the excuse of a mental semi-breakdown. It feels out of character for someone who's essentially a bit of a wuss.

the dogplot was funny, its not like its real or you even see anything, why is this such a problem for you.

it isnt like the lowest common denominator comedy wise

I don't like all the bisexual stuff, Mark and Jez kissing, Superhans and Jez blowing each other.

It adds nothing, it's not funny, it just seems to be in there to shock or further an agenda. I mean, maybe in Britain guys blow each other all the time and to each his own, but it just seems gratuitous to me.

"Sounds like it's hit a nerve. It's nothing to do with Britain. Believe it or not, Peep Show doesn't speak for the entire country. You might not find it funny, but the writers obviously did. The fact that it seems to offend you so much suggests quite a bit []"

"Suggests quite a bit", lol? Wow, totally didn't expect that kind of response.

I mean...... someone doesn't like something.....therefore that person must be lying and really like it. In addition to being a really smart, witty original comment I guess it kind of makes sense ......if you don't have any other argument to use.

You should have just called me a "homophobe" and called it a day dude. That's usually the stupid knee jerk reaction people like you use.

And of course it doesn't speak for all of Britain.

But (I'll use your logic here)....since you seem so "cool" with it, and into it, it obviously speaks for you. (Not that there is anything wrong with that)

I noticed you had your own complaint up there too about the "orgy". You must really be into orgies, that's why you don't like that scene, right?

Anyway, I've got to run, I'll leave you to blowing guys or whatever it is you're into........ but I have to ask, do you get many laughs when you're going down on guys?

reply

Um, okay.
I'm not sure which of the above comments are aimed at me (the original OP) but I thought the people saying 'Hey dude - it's fuuuunny - what's your problem - raw nerve much?' were actually talking to me.

Now - as compelling an argument as they bring to the table with these one line comments - I will have to stick to my original opinion. However I will try to elaborate.

Yes - to be frank it is somewhat of a raw nerve - I personally don't like animal cruelty. But I do laugh at all sorts of stuff in comedies that I don't in real life.

(And to clear the confusion - I am British, and I laugh at the straights and the gays, the whites and the spades.)

I love Family Guy, South Park, Team America - all of these fly close to the wind and it actually takes a lot to offend me...but here's the rub: It's got to be funny.

Personally I just didn't find the scene of pulling the head of a pheasant funny. I found running the dog over pretty funny - it was an accident and I could totally empathise with Jez's feeling of 'Oh sh!!!!t!' but yeah - eating it seemed a little like 'over kill' to me.

And just to clarify - the title of this thread wasn't: 'The Pheasant Bit Wasn't Funny Because I Said So And Anyone Who Disagrees is Wrong and A Twat.' The title is 'Bits you Don't Like'. And that was the bit I didn't like.

So - hope that's cleared up the confusion.

The episode where Mark and Jez conspire to get gym instructor Matt fired from the health club doesn't work for me. It's a despicable thing to do and one of the few times the guys are completely unlikeable. I can perhaps accept Jez would consider it but Mark does not have a strong enough reason to collude in something that could very likely wreck Matt's career. Admittedly Matt is a bit irritating with his motivational gym speak, but he is basically harmless (as evidenced by being shocked and genuinely apologetic when Jez falsely leads Matt to believe his interest in Nancy is not only unwelcome but totally freaks her out).

However the actor playing Matt is hilarious when reacting to Mark and Jez's outrageous accusations, and this episode also has a killer last line of dialogue.

To be honest I found the whole getting Matt fired thing hilarious, it was just so f-cking funny when Mark explained the whole Matt touching his penis thing I have no idea how Mitchell and Webb kept a straight face. I also think the homo-erotic stuff is pretty damn funny as well because its usually so 'edgy' especially Jez wanking off the aged techno guy 'Orgazoid'. The animal abuse is pretty funny as well.

reply

Really, Mark is the biggest prick out of all of them, he has done some truly hideous things through the series, this being another one of them, I think he would do anything to save himself even if it did mean ruining someone else's career

And the bi-sexual stuff is hilarious and is very unusual for a comedy series to do. And it doesn't take up much of the episodes at all, so I do agree that it sounds like your just personally uncomfortable with that kind of thing, and you cant fathom that these likable characters would do such a horrendous thing.

Just because he didn't like those scenes doesn't mean he's uncomfortable with those kind of things, maybe he just didn't find it funny.

reply

Nancy and Elena. Both annoying and pretentious and not in a funny way.

reply

Jez seems to have gradually morphed into a complete weirdo who ingests strange things, from a dead dog to his best friend's ex-wife's breast milk.

reply

Oh, okay maybe those comments weren't aimed at me, as I neither mentioned the orgy or homoerotica.
I will now though - I loved that episode, though I felt so sorry for Jez who seemed genuinely smitten with Nancy. I think I liked it because the guy she gets it on with is such a pretentious twat, coupled with Jez's awkwardness as he tries to decide whether he's turned on or not.
I agree about the one where they get the guy fired. I did find the episode funny but at the same time it's frustrating as it would have been so easy for Mark to have taken the guy aside and just had a quiet word about not saying anything to Sophie.

Also - Didn't twat used to be spelled with two 't's?

reply

That episode in season one where Sophie gets a promotion over Mark made me kind of uncomfortable cause of how depressed Mark becomes... pissing in the drawer and what not. It just made me think about how terrible life could be.

reply

Not a fan of the gym episode. Whole thing got too silly and out of character by the end.

Also, the scene where mark goes to alcoholics anonymous doesn't seem to work for me, it's too long and not particularly funny (father ted did it better), like the episode, mind.

Apart from a couple of misses, the show is a massive hit though :-)

Good point, I felt that too. I also agree the gym episode wasn't that great.

It's easier to pick moments from the later series, but a series 2 joke I thought misfired and was a bit depressing and uncomfortable rather than funny was the scene where Mark decides to fake self-harm but still actually cut himself to get Sophie's attention. You'd think that would be a scene they'd cut out.

Also in Handyman, although the scene is still quite funny, the location they chose for the Safari Park is very unconvincing. They obviously just went to an ordinary park somewhere in London, those wooden bollards lining the road don't look right at all, and no lions to be seen anywhere (couldn't they have edited in a few shots from Animal Park or something?). And why would a character like Foz drive a really old Volvo estate? I know it's a fairly low budget program but come on. The grounds of an open stately home somewhere would have looked better.

Man Jam (series 7, episode 3) I thought had a crap ending.

"I simply found the "orgy" scene boring."

Funny, that's what I said about the bi stuff. It added nothing and wasn't funny. It just seemed stuck in there.

And you "laughed" because your simple minded knee jerk brain told you to.

I obviously touched a nerve with you, so I apologize...I didn't mean to sound like I was insulting your lifestyle.....you like boys, more power to you.

reply

I can't think of anything I didn't like. I didn't really believe Toni having sex with Superhans as I think she would be too repulsed by his bad hygiene and it would make more sense for her to have sex with Johnston but then Mark would never agree to pepperspray Johnston so and I found that episode really funny so I can look past that.

reply

The burgling episode. All they had to do was call the cops when the kid called his friends and they wouldn't of gotten their TV stolen and got back their other stuff.

Mark did call the police, but the response time was too long.

reply

yeah the self harm bit is the only bit that wasnt really that funny. It looked too real, it almost made my arm sting.

I know you can battle the nasties, dear.
