People give him flack for being mean to jim but truthful jim did spend more time playing pranks goofing then working. Jim was not use to a compitant boss who is does not fall for his charm. Charles Minor felt a real life person brought to the office world and calls the show on its error how this is not how a real office should be like similar to frank grimes. What does jim expect when charles catches him on his pranks normal bosses would not put up with it. Plus jim tells him about the fake position he was appointed. When charles asks him the position entitled jim could not answer. SO charles did give jim time to explain. HE even gives jim chances to prove he is good actor by making rundown but jim does not know. Jim should know what it is . Dwight is the top salesman he is odd buthe puts more dvotion in work then jim so I do not blame him for treating dwight better. Aside from blaming jim in the soccer incident after accidentally kicking it coworkers face which was charles fault charles was a fair boss.
people in the posts thought charles was a jerk for being mean to jim. However jim deserved it. Charles is the kind of boss a real world(not sitcom would have)
I own the series, and the only episodes I refuse to watch are the Charles Minor ones. Just depressing and horrible. The guy was strict and an a-hole, the other workers were under a more repressive environment (one reason why this branch was successful was that Michael Scott allowed his workers a lot of slack.) and the Michael Scott chracter was just sad and pitiful, losing his job, then trying to start his own paper company out of the basement toilet/shower. Ugh.
This storyline doesnt come up until about the middle of the Sixth season, so I will watch the episodes on DVD and when I see the beginning of the episode where Michael and Dwight talk about the "15th Anniversary" I know the sh*t episodes are here and change to another disc.
No insult to Idris Elba. Cool dude, cool name. Idris was actually the name of the last King of Libya before Khadafi overthrew him. It is not Elba I avoided, just the story!
His character was realistic. Its like his character was from the real world brought to fictional dundber mifflin. I would not say not strict it is strong word he is fair. He did tolerate slackers rewarded hard workers sounds normal boss. Between david wallace and michael scott he was only compliant one. Jim spends more time doing pranks then working people look past this because he is charming . In real life jim would be fired. charles ask him to make a rundown when jim tells charles that he is capable worker yet he does not know how to make one. It is part of his job and he incapable of doing it makes me wonder how jim keeps his job. Plus dwight has the highest sales . As odd as dwight is he is committed to his job something jim is not. Aside from the soccer incident which was unfair for chalres to blame jim charles has everything to treat jim that wya. Michael spends company time with unproductive ideas. In real life mike would be fired
I agree...people didn't like him because it shook things up but clearly from a business perspective the Scranton branch was kind of a mess. Jim was a slacker, creed didn't even know what his job was, it was clear that Kevin always made accounting errors, looking at it from pure business Charles Miner came to whip them into shape and help the company and how people reacted was actually very reaslitic in my opinion. People resent the change and/or panic and suck up, which is exactly what happened. He wasn't a bad guy but he was deliberately cast as an antagonist.
I watch that storyline JUST for the cheeseball eating contest. When Michael answers the phone, "Michael Scott Paper Company," with his mouth full of cheeseballs? His laugh, and Pam and Ryan laughing is hilarious. I just love when Michael is having fun with people without sabotaging himself. A bright light in this tragic story arc.
I can't stand Jim, so when Charles came in and cracked down on him I loved every second of it. He and Jan (early seasons Jan only) are the only "bosses" on the show who were realistic.
Before jan went nuts she was competent boss i have had bosses like charles he was fair.I know he was meant to be antagonistic but he was not your typical antagonist. He was just trying to do what he thought was best for office. He did not put up with slackers rewarded hard workers showed he had fun side with soccer. Unlike michael he did not put up with stanely crossword during meetings. Because of his serious demeanor his employees took him seriously. He did not waste company time in meetings. He is actually a kind guy just overly dedicated to his work. Michael has his douchey moments too. Like when he introduced them to charles he points out their embarrassing sexual history. One of the most unprofessional things ever embarrassing . then insulting kevin and his single life saying he has no sexual histroy. it is hard to view michael as the hero and charles villian he puts office and employees before his own needs
He was a realistic boss, but still an a-hole. It wasn't just whether Jim was actually goofing off and wasting time. He would back talk to Jim when Jim would innocently say the smallest things.
"Why work harder than you should?" When talking about how hard Jim was working on the run down. Or "I guess it's not for everyone," he said intentionally demeaningly when Jim said he doesn't watch Soccer.
Why work harder than you should?" was a joke. he laughed too . he even trusted jim with rundown. jim should know what rundown is it is his job. That scene made me realize jim probably spends less time on his work . guess it's not for everyone," to me that did not sound demeaning it just seemed like a whatever to each their own type thing. The only time minor seemed like an ass was hge kicked soccer ball phyills face blamed jim. why would experience soccer play like minor kick a soccer ball that fast in parking lot. alike i said he gave jim plenty of chances to prove himself. but part of me think wasting company time bit him in butt cause he knows little about his job. when jim he had a postion that a makeup postion to dewight to make him feel better charles ask jim what tasts does someone in his psotion do he looked puzzled confused left. so charles did give jim chance to prove himself. jim did not have to lie about playing soccer charles comment meant to each their own.
Strongly disagree. It was clear that Charles hated Jim from day one and his backhanded comments at him were usually ill-willed. He was a realistic boss and Jim deserved it sometimes, but he was still an a-hole to him when he didn't have to be.
HAte is strong word. He walked in on JIm doing goofy unprofessional things like wear a tuxedo come up with 2 way petting zoo what do you expect him to when this was his first impression of jim. I did not find his comments rude to Jim . When he said why work harder then you have to was a joke plus he said the rundown was basic and easy impliyng it did not take too much time. that soccer comment was a to each their own thing jim was wanted to get charles to like him. I truly think it was a different to get a character that does not like jim. Seems like every character on the show falls victim to his so called charm to really view him as a slacker. David wallace and michael scott 2 dimwitted incompatanted bosses. I feel like dwight despite being best salesman and devotion to the company is not truly taken seriously due ot his eccentric behavior. It was interesting twist of fate seeing jim being in mikes spot where someone does not like him and it makes him feel insecure. It shows jim is not as confident as he seems.
What I could never understand is, why didn't Jim just go on-line and find out what a run down is? Type in "what is a run down in business?" on google and the answer shows up in seconds. Or, why didn't Jim just ask one of the other salespeople??
yes he could have done that. But I am wondering how jim keeps his job if he could not handle a tast like that. . Charles minor gave him that task thinking he could do it iam guessing he gave him duty because jim position he suppose to know that stuff. that scene where he did not know what a run down is made me realize jim probaly spends more time goofing off then actually doing his work. I am guessing he gets off by his charm which makes everyone forget he is lazy charles minor only one that can see through him
He was a hypocrite! All serious business unless you're doing something he likes. For instance Soccer. Then it's okay to goof around the parking lot playing Soccer.
that soccer thing was after work after hours. it did show he had fun side too. the only thing i criticize him for is blaming jim for the ball hitting the coworkers face. he should have kicked a ball that fast in a parking a lot. Beside that soccer kick i would sya he was fair boss. DFWight is odd ball but jim does start a lot of conflict between the two. He is usually first to pull the pranks. Just because jim is charming people look the other way ignore dwight good work ethic cause he is offbeat . It is good that dwight is fianlly ewarded for good work. The soccer thing did show he had fun side. PLus lke i said he did not enjoy goofing off when it interrupted work hours which is why the soccer thing was after work. Besides soccer kick incident i cant say charles was mean to jim. He was fiar Lets face he is no worse then michael scott who done and said a lot worse to coworkers. LIke when he thought his golden ticket idea was going to get him in trouble wanted to use dwight as scapegoat. Inexcusable. Or when pam came to work with glasses he said to her you have to take glases off to look hot you got backwards. Insuataitng she was ugly.
he was not a brown noser he just did not want to let david wallace know things where going bad. jim is brown noser . the way he kisses up to wallace and at times michael
when he kicked the ball really hard into nowhere (srsly where was he kicking it?) and then got mad and blamed jim for him hitting (was it meridith dont remember) that was horrible .... trying way too hard at a casual match
I don't think he was a terribly mean boss, but really not a great judge of character. He singles Jim out as a "disappointment" (his words) and comes down on him even though it is clear from the numbers that Jim is a competent salesman. He appoints Stanley as a "productivity czar", and puts Kevin on interim phone reception duty. Then he chooses Dwight as his partner during the mediation with MSPC (which he quickly realizes was a mistake but only after making it).
All of this sort of points to someone who presents a strong, commanding personality, and I would imagine he's intelligent and a competent accountant and task manager, but really is ill-suited to being a people manager on account of being essentially tone deaf to the people he's managing.
Jim is not competent sales man. Jim should know what a run down is its part of his job he does not. HE spends more time goofing off playing pranks then . Charles minor and the show has stated few times dwight had highest sales record. It shows dwights numbers beat jim. Dwight puts more effort into the company jim does not care about company. Charles even talked to the office on how everyone sales number including jims where dropping this shows that jim was not a compiatant sales. Aside from Dwight eccentric personality he is a good sales who has strong work ethic. Charles was the new guy you can not blame for thinking jim disappointment. Charles walks in on him making ideas like 2 way petting zoo wears tuxedos at work does pranks on dwight. WHen charles does give jim oppurtitinty to prove himself like ask him what take an assistant to manager ( a position jim said was orignal fake) does jim cannot answer. Or back to run down scenro which he does not know. michael scott is an unprofesisonal boss who has mind of 6 year old so he would let this crap jim does slide but not a normal boss. Jan said in interviews she found jim attractive and charming so it shows she is bias when it comes to jim work performance. David wallace while not as dumb as michael is not exactly boss himself
funny no one complains about the way michael treats his staff. He has said even far worse stuff to them charles has.Lets not forget kevin originally wanted to apply for warehouse position but michael had great feeling about him appointed him accountant . Which in the show it stated several time he is bad at his job. MIchael is far from best judge either,
michael is widely accepted as completely incompetent... that's the entire point of his character.... no one complains about it on here because it's accepted and is the whole point of the show
as for jim not knowing what a "run down" is... that has nothing to do with his SALES performance, and he was shown several times to be one of the top salesman at DM
It has been stated that dweight is top sales man still jim mentioned \he is assitnat to regional manager a postion that was orignal fake charles gave jim time to explain what the assitant does but jim could not answer jim does claim he does alot of extra work in the office outside of sales he should know what it is. jim does spend more time playing pranks then working. dwight actually top salesman jan does take him seriusly becaUSE HE IS odd. when he had a vlaid compliment agaisnt michael wasting time wathcing movies jan said tell michael this so i do not have to interact wiht you how rude. in real life jim would be fired for those pranks. it is stated david wallace and jan both find jim charming which explains why he keeps his job. what do you expect charles catches jim on his pranks. you can not expact take jim seriously. aside from michael incompantance he has said things alot worse then michael ever did. He delibertly insults the co workers picks favourites, he treats it like highshcool where he is kid who wants to be popular.
yes dwight was the top salesman at the branch & company but jim was also one of the top at the company, hence why he won some prize in one of the episodes and made a ton of cash after the commission cap was removed
Well, it's like Charles Minor didn't really have a personality, quirks or anything 'fun' about him.
Jim is a douche for trying to manipulate him, though.
Michael is basically the best - he even went to get booze so the workers could have a fun christmas. Charles Minor would never have done that. He was a bit of a tight-donkey. Or the synonym for donkey anyway..
