To Americans who watched this

I am a huge football fan and am a season ticket holder to West Ham United FC, and i really liked this film in the fact that the main football team was West Ham. Obviously i didnt really like that fact that the firm was called the GSE and not the ICF which is correct.

What i want to know is....To any Americans who watched this film, did it help you to like football if you didnt already? and if so what are you English teams that you support or follow? Most people from other countries follow either, Man United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, but does anybody follow a team like West Ham in America?

Not sure if you're still around and still care, but as an American who's never understood traditional football I really enjoyed those scenes, especially seeing how talented were the kids on Pete's team.

I'm crazy about American football and follow it at all levels, so I can read defenses and offenses, can understand a play unfolding and can usually follow where the heck the ball is going even when they're pulling a fake.

If I had that depth of understanding of regular football (trying to make it clear which sport I mean without using that S word you all hate. :D ). For that reason I wish this movie had more playing scenes and maybe coach Pete diagramed a couple of plays or strategies for his boys and/or Matt.

As to the violence, yes it was appalling and over the top, but at least how the movie portrayed the hooligans they only pounded on each other, as in consenting participants, which I actually respect.

If that aspect is accurate (and it being a movie that is very much in doubt!) it's insulting to hooligans to compare them to American gangs who generally focus their cowardly attacks and violence on defenseless people who want no part of that world.

These are two British made films focusing on football violence, it's largely died off in England due to police crackdowns but it still has pockets...

Here's a more inspiring film about football, even if you don't like football you'll like this.

I am an American and a European football fan. I first became a fan on an exchange student to France. The student I stayed with (who is still to this day a great friend of mine) took me to a game where we sat in the cheap seats and I instantly became a soccer fan.

Although my allegiance is to Bordeaux, many Americans (like myself) who do not like the typical big time teams like Man United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool as well as AC Milan, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, etc. root for teams like West Ham United and Tottenham. At my favorite bar in NYC there is a decent amount of Tottenham fans.

Bit late, but West Ham supporter in America right here! The film definitely helped the decision. Love all of our more popular American sports, but nothing rivals the fan intensity of English football, and I hate bandwagoners, so I had try out the club with the greatest fans, and I have loved them ever since. COYI!!

Of all the clubs to pick you picked West Ham? Most people don't have a choice because they usually go with whoever their family supports or the team nearest to where they live but you picked West Ham?

No offense to any Hammers. But still.

Tottenham bitches.

Even the most primitive society has an innate respect for the insane.

I adore this movie. I'm a white nerdy guy and the viewer proxy of Elijah Wood was perfect for me. We are even built the same. The place I live is in Kentucky, called Middlesboro (the place where part of the snake handling church show on NatGeo takes place) So, when I watched Green Street Hooligans, I did get a fire lit under me to start liking English (British?) League Football, as a starting point into the sport. I thought, well there is a sister city that my city is named after, So, let me see if there a Middlesbrough team and if so, are they any good. I googled, and the first result, was "Middlesbrough: Worst team in football history?" I gave up and never thought of it again.

Middlesbrough are a pretty awful team but just up the road you've got two Premier League teams; Sunderland AFC and Newcastle United FC.

Sunderland at time of writing are bottom of the Premier League only one point and bound for relegation while Newcastle United are in the top 10 and have the best track record out of the three.

It's also the city that gave the world Newcastle Brown Ale among many other things.

If Middlesbrough was your introduction into English football then you'd have been sorely disappointed.

Just for the record the reason it's called the English Premier League is because it only has teams from England (and Wales) while Scotland has it's own league. That's why it not called the British Premier League.
