To Americans who watched this

I am a huge football fan and am a season ticket holder to West Ham United FC, and i really liked this film in the fact that the main football team was West Ham. Obviously i didnt really like that fact that the firm was called the GSE and not the ICF which is correct.

What i want to know is....To any Americans who watched this film, did it help you to like football if you didnt already? and if so what are you English teams that you support or follow? Most people from other countries follow either, Man United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, but does anybody follow a team like West Ham in America?

I myself am a Liverpool supporter, but i know some people who support West Ham and Newcastle and other small clubs. I wish i could explain why Americans go for certain teams. With Man U and Chelsea and Liverpool obviously winning and being a big club helps, but i personally don't believe that effected my decision, i may be wrong though since there really is no rhyme or reason why we choose the club we fall in love with (and believe me despite what English people may believe we do love the clubs).

for starters, I'm not American, but since there was not a thread for other nationalities, so here it goes...

I started watchin football about 2 years before Beckham left United, cuz I was too bored watchin cricket (so u can guess my nationality now) but after two seasons of football, I havent looked back.

My favourite team for 24 HOURS was Liverpool FC (cuz that was the first match I watched...) but then, from the next day, and till forever, I am a Man Utd fan.

Recently I got an opportunity to watch an actual European match in Amsterdam (though I wanted nothin less than Old Trafford... I'm sure the day will soon come). And I witnessed first-hand what it is like to BE there at Matchday, when the flags and songs and booze are flowing. Footballs are being kicked around inside and outside the park, opposition team's supporters choking up the station, singing their 'song' as loads and loads of home team supporters are dumped on the platform to face them... And finally stepping into the stadium, becoming one of 'them'... It is just inexplicable.
PS : Did not witness a fight...
PS2 : I hate the word 'soccer' !

I am Canadian, we call it call soccer too, not really a fan. I do enjoy the sport for gambling reasons if that counts. When i was in UK last time I thought about grabbing a west ham jersey because I love the colours, didn't know it's fans had a bad reputation. I could probably get into it if I lived there and was drinking 5 pints first, over here its on early Sunday morning though not exactly drinking time. It's better than say cricket, even baseball but I like NFL or "football" to us as best sport.
This movie was great! Glad we don't have hockey hooligans in Canada. You can wear any team's jersey in any city and be safe, probably. Maybe not in Vancouver.

Erm, Bolton Wanderers, anybody??

United till I die-- Man United, that is. And it seems like most people here actually follow a team from Spain, mainly Farcelona. Anyway, to answer your question, I think President Obama is actually a West Ham fan. And by "think" I mean I'm 83% sure. It was either him or Clinton, but I know for a fact that someone who recently held presidency was a fan of one of the mid-table Premier League teams.

Also, I realize Manchester United is a huge bandwagon team, quite possibly one of the biggest ones in Europe, so sometimes I feel bad for supporting them. I really can't help it though, I fell in love with their play way before I'd learned of their reputation, and Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs are just players you can't help but adore. Anywho, I was simultaneously big on Tottenham, but their recent success in Europe and the Premier League is bringing more bandwagoners into perspective, especially in America, so I'm starting to lean towards Wigan a bit. Also, somewhat big on Burnley, even though they were only in the PL for one recent season. Ridiculous, I know.

Can't believe that there are people in this thread saying they respect WHU fans after seeing this film. The guys depicted in his film are not proper football fans at all, they are not wanted in the game or by their clubs. They are the kind of fans that threaten to get us kicked out of competitions and hated world wide.

I am a huge football fan (Tottenham) because I love the game, not because I want to use it as some excuse to act like a neanderthal thug.

It's cool that the US are getting more into the sport of football(soccer) though, in my very biased opinion there is nothing else quite like it.

I follow the Spurs, and yeh I think this movie is what got the ball rolling for my love of the game, even though there were hardly any soccer scenes.

reply

Thanks for replying mate. As much as I hate Spurs i like seeing the influence movies like this have in other countries.

reply

Hopefully no influence at all as it makes us look incredibly stupid.

I'm an American and support Liverpool. I got into English football by playing FIFA since I was little for the Xbox. Also the local coffee shop the barman is Italian. I would go in and we started talking football/soccer all the time. We would talk about the champions league and the EPL.

Just watched Liverpool win the merseyside derby with the help of poor officiating. I was happy to see Liverpool win but hate seeing an official spoil a game.

Never heard of any of them.
