"Yank" can be offensive to young children.
True story. Many years ago when I was no more than 12, my parents took us to Europe. We traveled all over in an Opal station wagon eventually taking the car ferry to England. While we were there visiting London, we stayed out in Windsor at the hotel on the corner across the street from the castle.
Anyway, while there, me and my young brothers (10 and 7) went over to the the park and eventually down along the river (Thames?). Lots of small boats were there with floating walkways out to the the boats. Being little kids we amused ourselves stepping on the walkways, watching the water splash up on the concrete walkway until some 12 British kid comes up to us and threatens to beat me up. "I'll smash you you bloody yank", I believe were the words. I ignored him at first, trying not to be the ugly American, but finally after he continued, I decided to kick his ass. Of course, the fact that he was calling me a Yank, short for Yankee, and we were from Tennessee didn't please me since one side of my family is made up of descendants of Confederates. (The word "bloody" didn't mean anything to me).
So as I punched his face into the payment, I kept shouting "I'm not a Yank, *beep* I'm a Rebel". Some old geezer eventually came by and pulled me off him. My brothers and I still laugh about that today.
