Do Americans find the word 'yank' offensive?

I've always wondered about the offense value behind the term "yank". Being British, I've never used it myself.

To my recollection there's an American team named "the yankies". Not that the team associates it self with the word, but if there's any American folk who still use this board, what are your thoughts on it?

Exactly. Most Americans give as much thought to what Brits or any other non-American thinks of them as they do to quantum physics. It doesn't enter their mind for the most part. Non-Americans are obsessed with Americans and trying to prove they are better than Americans or to put Americans down but the thing is that most Americans could not care less. Americans have never worried about what people, other than other Americans, think about them because most Americans think that the USA is so much better than anywhere that non-Americans only put them down or hate them out of jealousy.

Australia doesn't have to prove it's better than the US. Having lived in both countries it's obvious which is better. Americans don't recognise anything outside of their own country. They live blissfully ignorant lives. It's like being behind the Iron Curtain was in pre 1989 USSR. I feel sorry for them but they don't know any better. Where I live in Melbourne it has often been voted the most liveable city in the world. One of the main problems with America is that the South didn't win the war. The country would be a lot better if they had. The North should have taken more responsibility when abolishing slavery. It was a cultural fact for the entire history of the nation and at the point it was abolished all black people should have been repatriated back to Africa. Black people make up about 20% of the population and are responsible for about 80% of crime.

Even less. They make up 12 percent and commit over half of the murders and 85% of the interracial crime.

Worst thing that America ever did was bring blacks to the U.S. It has inflated our crime rate, ruined major cities, hurt schools, destroyed neighborhoods, etc. Blacks don't belong in western civilization. They belong in Africa.

Coming from a Brit, what a mind bendingly arrogant mind set you describe! Quite nauseating, infact.

Imtopeka...spoken like a true yank. I think u will find your describing Americans.

The only word that's offensive to Americans in our good 'ol USA is the N word. And that's usually if you're black. Some white people are offended by it too. Other white people don't get why.

The me that you know he doesn't come around much, that part of me isn't here anymore.

Honestly, the first thing that comes to my head when I hear the term "yank" is the baseball team from New York, the New York Yankees. I've spent time in Michigan and California, and the only time I've ever heard that word used (by an American) was to describe said baseball team. The first time I heard someone else use it to describe Americans, I heard it from Ian Darke when he was doing commentary for a World Cup match. And it was anything but offensive.

I live in Hawaii, and had a couple Brits for roommates when I was in school- and no- I don't find it offensive- they were my mates, and it was just semantics. I know the term is outdated but would you find it offensive if a yank called you a limey? I find that more petty and outdated. Living in Hawaii a lot of my friends are from other countries, and I like that. We aren't really 100% part of the U.S.- we are Hawaii, and act as such. Cheers- Toby.
