I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. It's not perfect, but I still loved it. The action was great, the acting (especially Ben Foster) and the Gun sound effects seemed pretty realistic.

That being said, I would recommended it to any one.

Raises Hand...

I LOVE the acting, though I have some problems with plot-holes, story-telling and motivation of character.

I didn't just like it, I loved it! And I think this is one of Bale's best performances. Actually, everyone in the film was excellent. I don't understand why people don't like this film. I'm not very big on westerns, but this is definitely one of my favs. The last 10-15 minutes put me on the edge of my seat everytime I watch. The end always makes me cry. Just knowing that William had to go home alone without his father is just too much.

CHRISTIAN BALE is PURE AWESOMENESS!!!

reply

*raises hand* I loved it. It was much better than I thought it would be. It's up there in my favorite westerns list with Tombstone, Magnificent Seven, and Lonesome Dove.

Witty closing remarks have been replaced by massive head trauma and severe hemorrhaging.

I didn't like this movie, I LOVED it! I think the only reason people are so hostile on boards like this is because they are frustrated bullies. Their anonymity gives them courage, or what they think is courage. All the negativity is kind of sad.

If you don't like something, fine. There is no value in trying to make other people feel bad because of their feelings about a fictional movie.

(raises hand) I loved it. Great performances by the actors.

I liked it. I didn't love it, but i liked it enough to say that the vitriol aimed towards it on this board is stupid.

reply

I just watched it this weekend, too. Like you I thought it was very good, but not great. The ignorance on this board does amaze me.(I'm not sure why, I see it on every board.)

It boggles my mind, how some people can't let go and enjoy the story -- i.e. let the writer/director tell the story they are trying to tell. Sure, Peter Fonda would not have been able to ride with the posse for at least a month, but so what? With a minor change the director could have made him less wounded, and that part of the story would have been fine. The point of the Fonda character was to show that he had his own standards of good which don't necessarily sit right with the message he was preaching. It was a little blunt, but the message got across.

The main story was that despite Wade's charisma and the admiration he received, he would rather have had a life more like Dan Evans. That was what he valued. So when William Evans had the drop on him, Wade maybe could have gotten away -- but he felt the need to protect Dan and William. He decided to look for another opportunity for escape that didn't have those dangers. Somebody earlier in this thread complained about that scene, but I don't think he understood it.

Oh, wouldn't it be great if I *was* crazy? Then the world would be okay.

Ben Wade is shown sketching people and things intermittently through the movie. He observes the minute details on not only a physical plane, but in character as well. He saw the hypocrsiy in all the characters, you can tell by the observations he made of Butterworth, Peter Fonda's character, etc. But Dan was diferent, he was "the real deal" in terms of integrity. I think Ben Wade saw that Dan did all that he did for honorable reasons and admired the relationship that he had with his rebellious son (who seemed drawn and in awe of Ben Wade). Ben was abandoned in a bus station with a bible as a child. He had to fend for himself and became jaded and angry, but there was a part of him that wanted to have the father that Dan was to his son...All of this culminated in the last scene where, after Ben tests Dan with a bribe that Dan doesn't take, while knowing he most likely won't make it out alive, but stays true to his convictions....that was the final realization for Ben that he really liked him and wanted him to succeed, to "give him" the moment of getting him on the train (to become the hero to his son) as well as get the money he desperately needed. The reason Ben shot his head thug at the end was because he stole that from him when Dan was shot and killed.
